View Full Version : Dombrowski=best gm in sports?
b-diddy 10-15-2006, 01:01 AM In his breif career i think dumbrowski has really put up an amazing resume.
he quickly built the 97 series winning marlins, who mightve been a destiny had ownership not forced a firesale. but then he quickly rebuilds anyway, and he put together the 01 (?) series winner (though he wasnt gm at the time they won).
now he appears to be ready to win another ring after rebuilding a franchise that was absolute crap in just 5 years.
thats just unbelievable to me. i seriously dont think theres another gm that can even touch him, as far as resume's go.
the best part is that detroit is where he wants to be, and he's young enough that he should be here for a long time.
tigers= new yankees?
detroitsportscity 10-15-2006, 09:42 AM Don't forget that he set up the Expo's who were ungodly in the lockout year.
The team that had Vlad and friends.
Glenn 10-15-2006, 11:12 AM It's "Dombrowski".
Hermy 10-15-2006, 11:56 AM Our minors have a lot of high ceiling guys, but lack true depth. We're gonna have to figure out what to do with the catching situation soon, and hope we get get enough scratch together to resign all the young arms as they mature into FAs. Aside from that we're gold.
Tahoe 10-15-2006, 12:17 PM I read most of our minor league teams won this year. That couldn't happen without depth, imo. Signing a FA catcher shouldn't be that hard of a problem especially with one of the best staffs in Baseball. Something like 17 million comes off the books this year, Vina, the other names escape me.
Truth is, if DD's hands weren't tied by the contracts early in his time with Detroit, he might have turned it around quicker than he did. Pretty amazing.
b-diddy 10-15-2006, 12:25 PM vina, young, casey all come off.
percival too, but insurance was paying his money.

We led the minors in wins one year when the best prospects we had were cornejo and Vanhecken. Its not a good barometer. When services rank our system they put us in the middle of the field. There are guys there, but not many.
Vinny 10-15-2006, 12:56 PM Cameron Maybin is like our ONLY position prospect.
Glenn 10-15-2006, 02:48 PM What's the concern with catching?
Vance just got an extension, and Pudge is still a top 5 C.

13 mil option on pudge in a couple years. Its not like he's not all about the $.
Vance couldn't hit .200 last year.
Tahoe 10-15-2006, 06:04 PM I agree we need to look at catching in a couple years. Pudge can't do it forever and the cupboard was bare. But we just drafted like 6 or 8 catchers (sorry can't remember for sure, but a lot). So I'm assuming DD would like to see a couple of catching prospects in the pipeline.
If that fails, picking up a FA catcher is not impossible. Vance is NOT the long-term answer for me, but a decent fairly cheap backup.
We need to lock up DD long-term and I'm pretty sure he will right this ship. We still have a little ways to go to get everything jiving, imo.

Catcher seems to be one of the easiest positions to fill, at least $ wise in FA.
R. Hernandez and Bengie Molina, and I think one other decent one were FA's last year, and all signed for decent $. Hernandez was a top 5 catcher, and Molina top 10. That is a place that doesn't seem to be that big a worry, IMO.

We are middle of the pack, and that is just fine, considering we were #29 or 30 a couple years ago, and also considering we've recently removed Verlander, Zumaya, and Granderson(not to mention Miner).
We still have a few guys worth noting.
Maybin is top 5. Sanchez and Miller top 30, depending on how much they factor in his injury.
We have pitching, Tata, Jurrjens, Sleeth is starting to come back, who knows how well he'll put it back together though, Miller is a stud, Claggett was pitching out of his mind. Whelen is still good too.
Our MLB ready guys are all pitchers though, our other positions are VERY young. But there is some talent.
We have Gorkys Hernandez a 19 year old OF who won the batting title in the GCL, and rated #3 in the GCL by BA (above high 1st rounders like Mattingly or Drabek).
Scott Sizemore is a middle infielder with some potential (#9 according to BA in Rookie league).
Clevelen seems to generally need some time to adjust to a league, but definitely showed his talent in the majors this year.
Larrish is a stud, and gives us some hope at 1b/DH.
Wilken Ramirez is a pretty good 3b too. Raburn has an OK stick at 3b or 2b, he probably will only amount to a bench guy long term though.
Glenn 10-16-2006, 10:22 AM I just noticed that Neifi has another year on his deal, ugh.
Check this page out for contract details, also fun tidbits like Brandon Inge's real first name (Charles) and Craig Monroe's middle name (Keystone).

Tahoe 10-16-2006, 07:05 PM I know very little about reading between the lines of baseball contracts, but it looks like 2.5m. Not too harmful. We needed him for insurance when PP went down. I am NOT a NP fan, thats fur sur.
Our success this year has peeps thinking a little tinkering here or there. I expect there to be a lot more moves than peeps think. NP can be gone if DD thinks he should.
Vinny 10-16-2006, 07:23 PM Jeremy Bonderman's going to start getting real expensive real soon. If we can sign him to a multi-year deal this off-season it'll be a real boon.
b-diddy 10-17-2006, 02:50 AM i agree tahoe, gotta make some changes in the offseason, its just no one wants to talk about them a week before this team goes for a championship (good reason).
but imo, we need to add offense. chicago's pitching was almost as good as ours, but look what happened this year (not bad, but not out of this world dominant). we almost certainly wont see a team era of 3.5 again anytime soon.
imo, the best fix would be to get a big bat, put him at rf, and let magglio play dh most of the time... that would be like adding two big bats for the price of one, cuz i think magglio's numbers would go up some if he only batted.
also, another reason to not trade for arod (other than him having no playoff game) is that i think he has a slow bat, and its only going to get slower. imo, hes a real good player, but not a perfect one, and not one i'd give up a stud young arm like bondo for.
Tahoe 10-17-2006, 07:55 PM I totally agree on the 'we can't expect that from our pitching staff every year' so we need some offense.
Mags to first base is kind of an interesting thought too. We could bring in that offensive outfielder. Not sure what happens with Casey and Shelty's bat is big question, so Mags would definately give us some offense out of 1st base. Not that this year was bad, but it was unstable there for a while. Mags has at least 1 more year in the outfield. I think he's finally healthy, but bet he'll get moved to first and dh at some point. And he'll do fine there too.
detroitsportscity 10-17-2006, 09:52 PM Sign Carlos Lee, Mags best friend.
Trade Thames and a pitcher for a SS.
Sign Aramis Ramirez if on the market(won't include in my lineup though)
Go with:
C- Pudge
1b- Guillen
2b- Polanco
3b- Inge(ARam?)
SS- A good one
lf- Lee/Monroe
cf- Grandy
rf- Mags/Monroe
dh- Whichever OF is sitting for Monroe
Jethro34 10-17-2006, 10:12 PM This is when it starts to get interesting. Now that the Tigers are good, let's see what Dombrowski can do. Our drafts will be at the end of rounds. We'll be buyers rather than sellers, meaning we ship prospects out instead of importing them. Depth won't come easy at this point. We'll have to see what lies in this past year's draft. Aside from Miller, we have no idea how capable any of those guys could be in the majors. There could be a lot there.
The one place I think the organization is really missing the boat is in signing young latin players. It seems like we're hardly on the International radar at all, and baseball is clearly an international game. We can't just have a US-draft based farm system and expect to be in the top 10.
Tahoe 10-18-2006, 12:12 AM CG to first does NOT work for me.
