I was going to post it, but a part of me was hoping it wasn't true. I didn't even see him get hurt, but I noticed he didn't come back in the game. This frickin' sucks man.[smilie=damn.gif]

If we get through PSU and Iowa we'll be straight though. Hopefully AA and Mathews can step it up.

yikes. i think we can make do without him, but i'd feel a whole lot better with him.

so does this mean its like 50-50 he'll play vs OSU? we dont just need him playing in that game, we need him at peek form.

Here are Carr's comments on Manningham at his Monday presser-

Q: Lloyd what’s your optimism level on Mario’s status?

LC: (Cutting off reporter) You know I’m always optimistic. Extremely so.

Q: Is he gonna play?

LC: Who?

Q: Manningham.

LC: Uh, is he gonna play? Well, we’ll have to see.

Q: (brief question - inaudible)

LC: I don’t have any comment on Mario… uh, I’m sure you understand. ‘Cause I don’t know everything there is to know, so… at some point I will, make sure you leave your cell phones open and I’ll call you.

Q: Are you at least acknowledging that initially there’s a need to… sort of find out where he’s at?

LC: I’m not acknowledging anything.

Q: (partially inaudible) … rumors about him missing several games… possibly the season. Can you temper that at all?

LC: Well, I, I don’t… uh, no. I can’t… I just don’t have anything to tell you.

Q: Is he hurt? Can you say that?

LC: (chuckles) I really don’t have anything to say.

Why does he never answer questions or give any info on injuries? God, it pisses me off.

He tore his miniscus and had surgery this morning from what I hear.

I know it's pretty typical for schools to cite privacy concerns for injured players (I've only seen that in college, not pro), but he does sound like he's doing a poor job of hiding something.

I got this from The Fort on The Wolverine. The attention paid to a 20 year old kid's knee is just awesome.

Somebody asked earlier for people with a medical background to comment on MM's injury. I'm a practicing Physician Assistant (PA) and a former Physical Therapist who did mostly sports rehab. I wanted to digest Carr's official statements on the MM matter before I commented.

MM probably sprained the knee running a route; it was not a contact injury. What's a sprain? Its an injury to the ligamentous tissue of the knee ranging from stretched fibers to a partial tear. A rupture is not a sprain; it is a "complete tear." How many ligaments in the knee are there? I count 5 ..... (1) the medial collateral lig., (2) the lateral collateral lig., (3) the medial and lateral menisci (as one unit of two doughnut shaped cushioning ligs. between the condyles of the thigh bone - femur - and the articulating surfaces of the tibia and fibula), (4) the anterior curciate lig., (5) the posterior cruciate lig.

Which one is the most commonly injured lig. in a non-contact injury like a cutting move? That would clearly be the MCL. The ACL is the most commonly injured lig. in a contact injury - leg hyper-extended with a lateral blow to the knee as in a tackle. You have to remember the MCL and medial meniscus along with the ACL are all attached. You damage one badly enough and all are going to be injured. That was probably the case with Javon Ringer's injury and this did not become apparent until he had an MRI.

Looking at the sequence of events that we know about and can confirm from multiple or official (Carr) sources .... Manningham came out of the game mid 3rd and did not return. He was seen icing the knee but also up and around during and after the game smiling and chatting with players. He was seen leaving the stadium via car. All the rest (being on crutches, being at UMH, etc.) are unconfirmed and poorly vetted so, I'm discounting all of those and they don't add much to a medical analysis anyway.

He undoubtedly had an MRI urgently on Saturday but not emergently or he would have left the stadium during the game. An urgent MRI would have been done if the trainers or docs on the sideline saw echymosis (purplish bruising) at the injury sight or there was joint laxity on exam. The former would have indicated blood in or around the joint; the later a rupture of the ACL/MCL. The urgent MRI that was done Saturday likely showed fluid in or around the joint space - a common and appropriate response to trauma .... "around" is better than "in" and you can tell this on the MRI. It is also likely that there was no evidence of a tear of any of the principal tissues at the time of the first MRI of the knee done Saturday or I believe Carr would have said something at his presser today.

Carr said, "we don't know everything .... you can't know everything," fits the scenario that the first MRI was either negative or equivocal and that a second MRI will likely be done tomorrow morning. He'll either be cleared to practice or he won't .... and we are not going to know which decision was made as is the common practice with the Athletic Department.

My bet is that regardless of what heppens this week, Mario will be dressed and on the sideline in HV. If he warms up, I'd expect him to play. If he doesn't make the travel roster or does but doesn't warm up, the injury (whatever it is and its not likley severe or season ending) is significant enough to sit him for the PSU game. You can bet JoPa and his staff will be Hawking every move that Marrio makes from the time he gets off the bus, which is why I'm confident Carr will travel him regardless.

Today, Mario will probably be in the whirlpool and getting rest, ice, compression, elevation and will be placed on a prescription dose of Motrin or Naprosyn (Alleve). A second MRI will likley be done tomorrow morning. If it doesn't show anything suggestive of a more significant injury - and frequently the injury does not appear for several days on MRI - he'll probably get cleared to practice "as tolerated." If he does get cleared, he'll be with the trainers tomorrow afternoon and just doing a light work-out. If everything goes OK with that, he'll practice on Wednesday but he'll probably wear a red, no-contact jersey. If that goes well, he might get another MRI (or he might not) and Carr/DeBord/the docs on staff will decide on Friday if he's cleared AND ready (based on how he practiced) to play.

Parade rest on everything having to do with the MM injury ..... a lot of over-reaction, IMHO.

Because he's a douche bag. I'm with you, he pisses me off too. Honestly, it's not that he's UM's coach. It's his personality. Look at that series of questions, he could have politely said he had no comment at this time. He acts offended that anyone would ask the question.

Apparently Carr is "thrilled" with the diagnosis after surgery.

With a 6-0 start having supressed the memory of last year's 7-5 season, thanks to a stifling defense and an opportunistic, ball control offense, Michigan seemed on track for a winner-take-all showdown in Columbus Nov. 18. One freak play in Saturday's 31-13 win over Michigan State, however, could have changed the Wolverines' fortunes.

The Detroit News reported that super sophomore receiver Mario Manningham was expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday morning (Oct. 10) to repair a partial torn meniscus and a possible partial tear of a medial collateral ligament in a knee, one expected to keep him on the sidelines for several weeks. Manningham left the game at the 3:22 mark of the third quarter on an innocuous looking play in which he wasn't involved in contact, leading to speculation that he was hurt on his final touchdown catch – a 27-yarder earlier in the third quarter – or maybe even in the celebration.

Asked Monday what happened on the play, fifth-year senior wide receiver Steve Breaston shrugged and said, "He scored a touchdown."

Manningham iced the knee for the remainder of the game, and was later whisked away from the locker room in a university van, another sign something wasn't right.

Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr wouldn't comment on Manningham's injury at his weekly press conference, insisting he didn't know everything there was to know. In his Tuesday teleconference he confirmed the surgery had taken place, adding he was "thrilled" with doctors reports.

"We got great news as far as the injury, and he'll miss this week," said Carr. "But we're very excited about the news we received."

Whew. I'm guessing he won't play at all until we go to the "snakepit" in Columbus. I don't think he'll be ready next week for Iowa and I don't think they want to risk him being out there vs. clowns like Northwestern and Ball St. the two weeks following. He may "tune up" a bit vs. Indiana the week before we play the Bucks.
