Pacers fans, I salute you.
Indiana Pacers player Stephen Jackson was hit in the mouth, struck by a car and fired a gun outside a strip club early Friday, police said.
i could have stopped reading after the first paragraph and been completely satisfied.
MoTown 10-06-2006, 10:30 AM Let's be honest. Who doesn't bring their 9 to the strip club? Strippers are a dangerous breed. You need "protection."

This might makes the Pacers efforts to sell "The New Stephen Jackson" to their hayseed fans a bit more challenging.

Pacers' Jackson 'happy to be alive'
ESPN.com news services
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson is "happy to be alive," after being punched in the mouth and hit by a car during a fight at a strip club in which police say he fired a gun in the air.
"I want to apologize to my teammates, to the fans and to this organization," Jackson said Tuesday after his first practice since the fight early Friday. "It was a very unfortunate incident. I definitely take responsibility for my action and everything I've done."
Indianapolis police on Tuesday arrested Deon Willford, 23, on felony counts of criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license for the fight.
Willford drove a car that hit Jackson, sending him tumbling over the hood, said Indianapolis Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount. Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air in apparent self-defense during the fight.
Jackson has stitches in his lip and other scrapes and bruises.
"I'm definitely blessed to be here today," he said in his first public comments since the fight. "I didn't really think I'd be up the next day after I got hit by a car and be walking. But I'm definitely blessed. I'm glad to be on the court. I'm happy to be alive and be able to be with my teammates and my family."
He could be available to play in the Pacers' second preseason game against Utah on Saturday.
Besides Jackson, teammates Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter were at the club at 3 a.m., police said. Officers said they found a small amount of marijuana in the passenger-side door of point guard Tinsley's car. But no arrests were made because there were three others in Tinsley's car and police could not determine who had the marijuana, authorities said.
The Indianapolis Star reported on Monday that Jackson has had his probation extended one year after he did not complete the terms of the sentence he received for the 2004 brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Oakland County (Mich.) assistant prosecutor John Pietrofesa told the paper that last week's incident had no bearing on his decision because no charges were filed.
Former Pacers star Reggie Miller criticized the players on Monday. The league's all-time leader in 3-point goals went on Dan Patrick's ESPN Radio show and said the actions by the four players were a "punch in the gut" to team CEO Donnie Walsh and president Larry Bird. He also criticized coach Rick Carlisle, saying his training camp hasn't been difficult enough if the players have enough energy to be partying at 3 a.m.
Bird said Tuesday he had no response to Miller's comments.
Uncle Mxy 10-10-2006, 06:28 PM Is it routine to simply extend probation like that? I'd think that if his year were up and he hadn't fulfilled the terms of his probation, he'd have his ass hauled in. "Oh, you didn't meet the deadline? I'll give you another year to do it." doesn't sound especially real-world to me, but I'm not intimate with the Department of Corrections. Was there possibly some failure at our end -- lack of availability of anger management classes, lack of things he could do for community service? Does he have to do his community service in Oakland County?
WTFchris 10-10-2006, 07:13 PM I've never been a fan of Reggie the player, but I like Reggie the color commentator. He ripped into Jackson about this, and also his teammates for blindly backing him on it.

Jackson charged with criminal recklessness
Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson was charged with criminal recklessness Wednesday following last week's confrontation outside a strip club.
Jackson was charged with the felony and two misdemeanor counts by the Marion County prosecutor five days after he fought with another group of men at the club. Teammates Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter were also at the club, but were not charged.
Jackson was hit by a car, and police say he fired a gun in the air at least five times. He originally told police he was punched, but later said he was not, prosecutors said.
On Tuesday, Jackson apologized for the fight, saying he was "happy to be alive." His comments came hours after police arrested another man on several charges in connection with the fight.
Jackson was expected to turn himself in Wednesday or Thursday, prosecutors said. The felony count carries a prison term of six months to three years.
The Pacers did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.
Police on Tuesday charged Deon Willford, 23, in the fight. He faces felony counts of criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license.
Willford drove a car that hit Jackson, sending him tumbling over the hood, police Sgt. Matthew Mount said. Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air during the fight about 3 a.m.
"Firing the shots in the air at that point is criminal recklessness," Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said. "Those bullets, once they come up, have to come down, and they come down at least 90 miles per hour, and they do absolutely have the ability to take someone's life."
Brizzi said between 30 and 35 people were in the parking lot.
Jackson returned to training camp Tuesday with stitches in his lip and scrapes and bruises. Prosecutors say the injuries were all caused by the car hitting him.
Officers said they found a small amount of marijuana in the passenger-side door of point guard Tinsley's car. But no arrests were made at the time because there were three others in Tinsley's car and police could not determine who had the marijuana, authorities said.
None of the other players were charged but were listed as witnesses for the prosecution.
Tinsley and Hunter told investigators they heard gunshots, but did not see who was shooting, according to an Indianapolis police report.
Daniels told police he saw Jackson struck by a car, but was not sure if he heard any gunshots.
Jackson returned to the Pacers' training camp on Tuesday with stitches in his lip and other scrapes and bruises. The Pacers were to open the preseason Wednesday night against the New Jersey Nets, but Jackson was not expected to play.
In charging information, prosecutors said Jackson kicked a man who police said has a deformed arm. Jackson told police that the man, Quentin Willford, started the brawl.
Another man, Raymel Mattox, was charged with misdemeanor counts of battery, disorderly conduct and marijuana possession. Police say he also hit Quentin Willford.

UberAlles 10-11-2006, 10:19 PM firing a gun in the air is stupid, and it can kill. but you know how many people do this on new years, the 4th of july, or any time theres any sort of excuse?
Ah yes, the old "other people do stupid things, so it must be ok" argument.
You have mad game b-diddy.
Higherwarrior 10-11-2006, 10:34 PM yeah but as stupid as it is to fire a gun in the air on 4th of july, etc, it has to be put in context. yes, someone still can get hurt. but what is their motivation for shooting? it's just an overly excited idiot celebrating. jackson certainly wasn't motivated by joy; he was likely angry to put it mildly.
again, someone can just as easily be hurt in either situation. but i would ask you to consider jackson's motivation for shooting and compare it to the other examples you gave. both present dangerous situation, for sure. but IMO i'd probably be more concerned about jackson hurting someone given the context in which he was firing the weapon and the already tense situation he was in.
jackson was not celebrating. he was firing a gun in the midst of a very tense situation. it is far more likely he could have escalated things in that context and someone could have been hurt or killed.
and last i checked, firing a gun in those situations qualifies as a crime regardless. someone could be arrested for the same charge jackson was charged with, if i'm not mistaken.
maybe someone is more familiar with the laws than me.
anyway, i don't really give a shit. i just HOPE he gets the book thrown at him because IMO he is a spoiled punk who deserves a reality check.

yeah, he certainly seems like the calm type of guy who would try to be the peacemaker.

or were you joking with the whole 'peacemaker' remark....?
let's not forget they found weed in tinsley's car too- that is being overlooked. the cops didn't charge anyone for that because they weren't sure who all was riding in it.
they got off easy on that one. those pacer guys sure get a bad rap- they're minding their own business and doing things by the book, and trouble seems to always find them! LMAO!

The average joe doesn't go to jail for coulda/woulda/shoulda hurt somebody. Fines, probation, the odd bit of community service, but not jail unless there are some pretty exceptional circumstances.
If anything, being a public figure works against you in something like this because of all the bloodthirsty cynics who want to see an example made out of a rich guy. Sometimes judges, political animals that they are, will react to that kind of public sentiment.

both situations just fall under the category of recklessness.
what is the difference if i fire a gun in the air to celebrate the 4th of july or to scare away a would be attacker (albeit perhaps misguidedly)? both result in a chance of someone getting hurt.
you said "i say throw the book at him. he could've killed someone and they should make an example of his punk-ass."
i just fail to see the difference, and infact, if anything, i think jackson may be a little more justified in his actions (just a little).

Stephen Jackson and the Police Report
by Lang Whitaker
Yesterday in Indianapolis, Stephen Jackson was charged for his part in the strip club/gunshot mess from earlier in the week. With these charges, the police also released the police report for the entire incident, which the Indy Star has posted on their website here http://www.indystar.com/assets/pdf/BG447041011.PDF. They also have the audio of the 911 call that started the whole thing, which is worth listening to if only to hear the woman who called the report in describe Stephen Jackson as being “at least six feet tall.” You think?
Anyway, I spent the last hour combing through the police report. Below is the Cliff’s Note version of the police report.
1) Page One really just sets the scene. It also reminded me that had Stephen Jackson not fired a gun into the air five times, the police probably wouldn’t have been called — they were only there to respond to a call that someone was shooting a gun into the air. So without the gunshots, there’s a good chance we never even would have heard about all of this. Which makes me wonder: How much other stuff goes on that we never even hear about?
2) Jimmie Hunter was rolling with Stephen Jackson that night. (Trying to get in good with the vets?) Jamaal Tinsley was in a black SUV with someone else that hasn’t been identified.
3) Stephen Jackson “immediately” told the cops he had fired the shots and that he had a handgun with a valid Indiana license.
4) Jamaal Tinsley told the police that he had a gun in his car. He gave an officer the keys to his car and told the police that they could retrieve the gun. And wouldn’t you know it? While getting out the gun, and officer found a bag of “suspected” marijuana in the door’s pocket.
6) They also mention stopping Marquis Daniels in a white Bentley, but that’s the only time he’s mentioned.
7) One of the detectives talked to a guy who works in the club. This guy says there wasn’t any altercation inside the club, but there was a fight in the back parking lot. This dutiful employee tried to break it up but it “escalated.” He ends his appearance in the police report by saying he heard an engine, a thump and then observed a tall black male on the ground. “He then heard gunshots.”
8) Ah, Stephen Jackson himself. They read him his rights, he waived them. He agreed that nothing happened inside the club, but allows that the person who ran him over with the car might have “felt disrespected” because the Pacers crew ignored the driver while they were in the club. SJ left the club with Snap Hunter.
9) Here’s where it gets all surreal. Jackson says outside the club he was approached by “a small black male with a handicapped short arm.” This guy had one hand “in the back of his pants.” (The police don’t clarify, but I’m assuming it wasn’t his “handicapped short arm” behind him.) Weirder, SJ tells the police this little guy was yelling, “Dump!” over and over. Jackson thought this meant to shoot, and he started yelling back at the guy, and somehow this escalated until SJ got punched in the mouth by a “short stocky” guy. But isn’t everyone going to be short to Stephen Jackson?
10) Jackson says he had his handgun on him while all of this was happening, but he never mentions having gone to his car. So was he strapped the entire night?
11) Jackson and the short stocky guy fight. Then the guy hops into a car and drives it at Stephen, “which threw him over the vehicle and onto the ground.” He squeezed off four or five shots, Snap Hunter helped him up and then Snap threw the gun into SJ’s car.
12) The police interview Tinsley. His first name is spelled “Jamall” throughout the document. Not a lot of Pacers fans in the police department.
13) JT says they were in the club and someone ordered them drinks, but he doesn’t say who. Then, and this might be my favorite sentence of the year, “a black male with handcappied short arms started yelling about being a pimp and saying none of the Pacers have $500.”
14) No, I don’t know what “handcappied short arms” are either.
15) Tinsley says there was beef with the short guy and the stocky guy inside the club, because those two guys were causing problems with the dancers the Pacers had paid for. Tinsley agrees that the short guy was yelling out in the parking lot and had his hand in his waistband. He heard the gunshots but didn’t know where they came from.
16) Snap Hunter, your turn. He tells the exact same story as Jackson, and adds that he saw Jackson get hit by the car. Next!
17) Marquise Daniels was actually parked across the street from the other guys, and from across the street he saw a fight broke out and he saw Jackson get hit by the car. He was, however, “unsure if he heard any gunshots.” That’s it for Marquise Daniels — he’s never mentoined again.
18) Next comes the club’s DJ, who’s story is slightly different: He heard gunshots and came to the front door, where he “observed a handicapped black man being thrown to the ground and kicked.” He then saw Jackson get hit by the car and then heard more gunshots after that.
19) The police found a few bullets and tire marks, and the club’s video apparently shows Jackson being thrown from the car after being hit. That’s gotta hit YouTube soon.
20) After all this they take another statement from Jackson and this time they taped it. Jackson tells the same story again, this time slipping in that he did run to his car and grap his gun before the fight started. The fight started, and he now says he never got punched. He does allow that “he did kick the male with the handicapped arm when he was on the ground.” Man.
21) Jackson said he fired a gun into the air a few times to break up the fight, he got run over by the car, and then he fired a few more times.
22) I really like that Stephen was able to describe the car by one important detail: It had 26-inch wheels. He’s sure of that.
23) One day later they take statements from Daniels, Hunter, Tinsley and Tinsley’s friend. Guess who says the marijuana belongs to him. Go ahead…take a guess…right! The one guy who isn’t an NBA player. Sure is lucky for those guys. Whew!
24) Two days later, the police got a tip that the two suspects were in an apartment complex. They go over there and catch the guys, who turn out to be cousins, both with the last name Willford. The cops take ‘em in.
25) The guy they call Dino, who must be the stocky one, tells his side. He says nothing happened in the club, and then once they were outside all the Pacers Crew surrounded his cousin (who must be the guy with the handicapped arm). He says he saw the Pacers crew beating up his cousin, then heard gunshots. He jumped in his car and on the way out drove over the guy who was firing the gun. Apparently he left his cousin there to get beat up.
26) His cousin, who appears to be the guy with the handicapped arm, goes next. This must be Fingers. Fingers says he was leaving the club and trying to talk to a woman when Stephen Jackson came up to him and started yelling at him and waiving a gun around. He then fired into the air. Next thing Fingers knew, a bunch of guys had him on the ground and were kicking him. He looked up and saw Dino driving away. (Thanks, cuz.) He then — and this is great — says he got up and walked over to a pay phone, where he called a cab. Just like that it was over?
27) And that’s about it for the police report. They mention going to Dino’s Mom’s house and impounding the car, and then it ends.
Higherwarrior 10-12-2006, 06:16 PM jackson should be locked up in violation of his probation, if nothing else.
Uncle Mxy 10-13-2006, 06:42 AM The police interview Tinsley. His first name is spelled “Jamall” throughout the document. Not a lot of Pacers fans in the police department.

Judge enters not guilty plea for Pacers' Jackson
Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=ind) guard Stephen Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3210) spent more time in a courtroom than on a basketball court Thursday.
Jackson was led away in handcuffs after a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf on a felony charge of criminal recklessness and two other counts for a fight outside a strip club. Jackson was booked into jail and released after posting $10,000 bond, a spokesman with the prosecutor's office said.
The proceedings took longer than expected, so Jackson missed afternoon practice, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said.
"He'll have to catch up, and he will," Carlisle said. "He's a smart guy. He picks things up very quickly and he's a veteran, so I'm not worried about it."

Jackson: I was merely defending my teammates
Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson says he was just trying to protect three teammates when he fired a handgun and was hit by a car during a fight outside an Indianapolis strip club.
The 28-year-old Jackson faces a pretrial hearing on a felony charge of criminal recklessness and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct Nov. 1, the same day the Pacers open the season in Charlotte, N.C.
His trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 8 in Marion Superior Court. The criminal recklessness charge carries a prison term of six months to three years.
"I'm in a situation now where people thought I acted recklessly, when I know I didn't," Jackson said Saturday night after the Pacers' 97-84 loss to the Utah Jazz.
"Over due time the courts will know that," he said. "We'll be able to see I wasn't trying to hurt anybody. I had no intentions of hurting anybody. I was just making sure me and my teammates were safe. I'm the one who got hit by the car."
Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air at least five times during an Oct. 6 fight outside Club Rio. Jackson originally told police that he fired the gun in self-defense, but Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said Jackson retrieved his gun from his car and fired it before he was struck and injured by another car.
Jackson, who showed up at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday sporting a shaven head instead of his familiar braids, was booed by some fans during the game. He came off the bench and finished with six points in 23 minutes.
Jackson was serving probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery charges in September 2005 in his role in a 2004 brawl between Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich. He is scheduled to appear at a probation violation hearing at a Rochester Hills district court on Nov. 13 and could face up to three months in jail.
The court schedule and shadow of jail time could complicate Indiana's season. But Pacers coach Rick Carlisle seemed relatively unruffled.
"We'll cross those bridges when we come to them," Carlisle said. "I've heard some dates thrown around, but I don't know that there's anything set in stone. I know that a lot of times schedules can be adjusted based on people's work, but I'm not going to make any presumptions on that. ... That's light years away."
