I am getting a little worried about Jason Maxiell -- dude needs a sandwich. I am joking, but Maxey has lost another 15 pounds since I last saw him in Vegas at summer league. And he had lost about 25 pounds at that time, from the end of the season. He is way lean, a lot quicker and they tell me he is still strong and still able to bang and hold his position in the block. Look for him to get a long look at the fourth big man spot.
someone mentioned his weight loss in a thread here somewhere, at about 20 pounds. that's pretty substantial, but 40lbs is crazy. i think Mad Max is ready to choke a bitch (http://wtfdetroit.com/index.php?page=mad_max_facts).

If true, I picture him a bit like a young Shawn Kemp.

Stay away from the powder, Max.

Glad Chauncey had them install that condom machine near the stalls in the team locker room.

Don't worry, losing 40 lbs still keeps Maxiell at a solid 563 lbs of pure muscle. Or pure energy - whichever way you take it.

Maxiell would not be happy with that open door.

Maxiell doesn't like men lurking around his back door.

No, Maxiell can still eat doors too.
He just digests them faster, that's all.

Maxiell loses weight, gains quickness (http://www.mlive.com/pistons/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1160003403241570.xml&coll=1)

AUBURN HILLS -- As an undersized power forward who is (generously listed) as being 6 feet 7, Jason Maxiell knows the chances of him getting taller are slim.

So what did he do this summer?

He got slimmer -- and quicker, in addition to maintaining the upper body strength that makes him one of the strongest players on the Detroit Pistons' roster.

Less weight and more quickness have also given the second-year forward a more optimistic outlook about cracking a deep Pistons rotation, even with the void left by Ben Wallace's departure to Chicago.

"This could be a breakout season for me," Maxiell said. "I'm going to try and take advantage of it. Ben left the door open, and I'm going to try and walk through it."

Maxiell, who lost about 20 pounds since the end of last season, said the biggest change he made this summer was in the types of foods he ate. He also cut back on certain, uh, beverages, too.

"No more beer; just red wine," said Maxiell, who now weighs about 240 pounds. "And no red meat, just chicken and fish. You have to do what you have to do."

Maxiell's commitment to bettering himself physically has not gone unnoticed by his teammates, especially Rasheed Wallace, who, maybe more than any other Piston, used to tease him about his girth.

"He needs it," said Wallace, referring to Maxiell losing the weight. "We're going to depend on him this year. Once I'm not in the game, or Dice (Antonio McDyess) is not in the game, we're going to need him to get those buckets and get those rebounds and play defense. This year, he'll be an (important) part of the team."

And Maxiell feels that with less weight, making a bigger impact offensively will be easier.

"I feel my advantage is my quickness, the length of my arms and my strength," said Maxiell, who appeared in 26 games as a rookie last season. "The forwards that are going to guard me are going to be bigger and slower, so I can go around them and score."

Wallace knows that Pistons head coach Flip Saunders plans to have the team play more zone defense this year. That doesn't mean Wallace has to like it.

"I'm not knocking his coaching zone or nothing like that," Wallace said. "I don't want y'all to get it misconstrued, but in the system that I grew up in ... I don't like zone. Zones are terrible. It's just trying to hide the weakest defenders."

Saunders plans to play more zone because, based of the NBA is being officiated, teams that play man-to-man defense exclusively are often at a distinct disadvantage.

"What we saw last year, with (Miami Heat guard) Dwyane Wade in the Finals ... you have to be able to put yourself in position to have help situations," Saunders said.

Pistons guard Flip Murray is in rare company. He actually likes the new basketball that will be used this NBA season. Several NBA players, including most of Murray's teammates, aren't so thrilled with it.

"I worked out with it all summer. I like it," Murray said. "Everybody has to play with it, so everybody has to get used to it."

Wallace is among those who don't like it. He didn't realize so many others felt the same until he shot a Nike commercial in Los Angeles recently with other NBA players, including Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and two-time league MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

"Everyone agreed, that new ball is terrible," Wallace said. "I don't see how they can just go ahead and change that, without asking the players. It's crazy, man. It's crazy."

Hard to believe that Maxiell got into 26 games last year. Sure didn't seem like it.

That commercial featuring Sheed, Kobe & Nash sounds interesting, too.
