I like Langlois about as much as any of the beats, but it's going to be interesting to see how much of his own voice they are going to let him have.

NBA teams hiring their own beat writers is a troubling development, IMO.

On the bright side, maybe it will make some of these guys work a little harder, since most likely most of the stories are going to get spoonfed to Langlois by the team.

Can he possibly be anything but a mouthpiece?

Also, I like the ad for Rock Financial at the end of the "article". I wonder how a professional journalist like Langlois is going to like adding that blurb at the end of each of his "articles"?

Pistons.com Adds Veteran Writer, Keith Langlois Brings Healthy Resume to PS&E Web Sites

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Officials from the Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment (PS&E) announce they have added Keith Langlois, most recently lead sports columnist at The Oakland Press, to their staff as Web site editor.

Langlois, who brings over 27 years of professional sports journalism experience to PS&E, will act as Pistons.com's official beat writer and cover the team on a day-to-day basis. He will also contribute to PS&E’s other Web sites, including DetroitShock.com and Palacenet.com.

“Keith is one of the most highly regarded writers in the Detroit area and has a great feel for what sports mean in this town,” said Tom Wilson, president and CEO of PS&E. “Having a writer of Keith’s caliber covering our team on a daily basis will greatly enhance the content of Pistons.com and make the site a true destination for all team and organizational news.”

Langlois served at The Oakland Press for the last 22 years. He worked as a sports editor until 1996 when he was named the newspaper’s lead sports columnist. Over the life of his career, he has won numerous awards. Most recently, Langlois was recognized as the Michigan Press Association’s top sports columnist in 2003 and 2004.

He also won the first-place award from the Detroit Society of Professional Journalists for 2005. Langlois’ story on Joe Dumars’ remembrances of his father on Father’s Day was considered for the association’s Best Journalism of the Year award.

Langlois will officially begin with PS&E on Monday, October 2, 2006 and his first assignment will be covering the Detroit Pistons Media Day for Pistons.com.

I really liked Keith's work at the Oakland Press. Now he's gone from excellent columnist to organizational mouthpiece beat writer.

Damn sad.

Maybe this will allow McCrapsky and Blakely to develop some courage in their reporting.

Why does Keith Langlois leave a job he's been at for 27 years?
