Lions cut receiver Bradford

ALLEN PARK -- Injuries on the offensive line have caused the Lions to juggle their roster, and wide receiver Corey Bradford was a victim of the numbers crunch.

Bradford, signed as a free agent in the off-season to provide a deep threat, was released Wednesday afternoon. There was no immediate announcement from the Lions on the identity of the lineman they had signed.

Bradford started the opening game against Seattle but did not play well and was relegated to backup status for the next two games. He provided little impact, and the focus of the passing game was on Roy Williams and Mike Furrey.

Rookie wide receiver Shaun Bodiford, who made the team as an undrafted free agent, has been told he will be active for Sunday's game at St. Louis. Bodiford was inactive for the first three games because of an injured left knee. He returned to practice Wednesday on a fulltime basis.

Injuries have hit the Lions hard on the offensive line. There have been three starters at right tackle in the first three games. Rex Tucker and Barry Stokes both have missed two of the first three games. Ross Verba started at left guard in Sunday's loss to Green Bay after missing the first two games. Verba went out early in the first series with a hamstring injury and did not return.

Lions cut Bradford, sign OT Saipaia

The Lions released wide receiver Corey Bradford and signed offensive tackle Blaine Saipaia on Wednesday.

Bradford signed with the Lions as a free agent in the off-season and entered the season as the starting wide receiver opposite Roy Williams. But he was replaced by Mike Furrey in the second game at Chicago. He caught three passes for 36 yards in the Lions’ first three games.

Saipaia, who played for offensive coordinator Mike Martz in St. Louis in 2004 and 2005, brings much-needed depth to a beaten-up line. Tackles Rex Tucker (knee) and Barry Stokes (hamstring) are battling injuries. Rookie Jonathan Scott started at right tackle Sunday against Green Bay.

The Lions visit the Rams this Sunday.

The Detroit Lions cut wide receiver Corey Bradford on Wednesday and filled his spot on the roster with tackle Blaine Saipaia to help their banged-up offensive line.

Bradford was signed in March as a free agent to a $7.4 million, four-year contract, which included a $2 million signing bonus. The Lions thought he would be a solid veteran to complement their young receiving corps.

The nine-year veteran started in the season opener and had three catches for 36 yards, then did not make a catch as a reserve in the next two games.

Bradford, who previously played for Houston and Green Bay, has made 204 receptions for 3,218 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Saipaia played 17 games for the Rams the past two years, when Detroit offensive coordinator Mike Martz was their coach. He might play soon because offensive linemen Rex Tucker, Barry Stokes and Ross Verba have been slowed by injuries.

How in the freak can Matt Millen still have a job? I don't think there's anyone on Earth who does their job worse than he does and he just got an extension! We basically cut 3 of his first round picks and now we're releasing big free agent signings after 3 games? WTF? WOW, just WOW.

Why on earth did we give an old fart like Bradford 4 years anyway? Didn't he learn from Hakim and Schroeder that aging career #3 WR's cannot be given 4 year deals and be expected to start?

My big problem with Millen is not the mistakes he made on Joey, Charles, Marty, Mooch and the crap FA's in his first couple years. My problem is that he doesn't seem to learn from that. He makes the same mistaks continually. Has he taken one too many hits in the NFL or something?
