View Full Version : OGT: Michigan at Minnesota

Last seaon Michigan lost 5 games; Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State and Nebraska. They are guaranteed a chance to avenge 4 of the 5. Hopefully they will finish far enough ahead of Nebraska (already with 1 loss) that they don't end up with the chance to avenge that one this season.
Anyhow, the past 2 weeks they are 2-0 in revenge games. Their 3rd consecutive chance comes Saturday night in the Baggy Dome.

Also, we saw how a team avenges a flag planting to get back the megaphone.
Well, Michigan faced their own flag planting incident and gave up the little brown jug, something they are used to having.

Minnesota has struggled, going 2-2 on the young season already.

However, watching them play against Purdue I saw some very nice play calling.

The Gophers are very much a running team, averaging over 225 yards per game on the ground.
The Wolverines have been dominant in rushing defense, stiffling opposing backs.
The Minnesota D has had mixed results, shutting out opponents in their 2 wins, while giving up 27 to Purdue and a whopping 42 against Cal.

How did Cal do it? They shut down the Gopher rushing game, forcing Minnesota to beat them through the air. It lead to 2 interceptions. Meanwhile Cal had a WR with 3 TD and a Heisman candidate RB score 2 TD of his own.

That script sounds awfully familiar. Could Michigan shut down the run and pick off a pair of Cupito throws? Could Manningham add 3 more TD's to his resume, with a pair for Hart as well?

I don't think we'll see 42-17, like that game.

I say 38-14. (Close enough)

I look at this one just like I looked at Wisconsin. They are average teams at best. Minnesota doesn't score more than 13. Giving Michigan an undefeated record going into MSU week.

This game scares me.......a tiny bit.

Minnesota has a few things going for them. It's a night game at home on ESPN, so they'll be crazy hyped. Also, the Gophers from the Land of the 10,000 Glaciers will not want give up the Little Brown Jug after not seeing it since 1986. (Some of Minnesota's players weren't even born yet)

OK, to the game. Obviously Michigan has more talent than Minnesota, but every now and then the Gophers have some talent at key positions and are able to hang with the Wolverines. With that said....this is not the year. Minnesota's defense is horrible, especially up front. Look for some smashmouth football from the Wolverines and Mike Hart should have a huge day. On the offensive side of the ball, Minnesota is known as a running team, but will not be able to run it as effectively due to Snaggletooth Maroney going to the NFL and Gary Russell's inability to hook up with Bobby Jackson's tutor and pass a test. Pinnix, their RB is a career backup and their other back is a raw converted linebacker. I give Meeeechigan and huge edge here as they probably have the best d-line and possibly front 7 in the country.

With all that said, the jug returns home and becomes a myth again to all the igloo dwelling Minnesotans.

Is Super Mario holding the Spartan helmet up triumphantly? It looks like he is raising it up kickoff style.

Ok, I'm really getting geeked for this game.
If Rojo was watching the State game, he can't possibly be feeling them right now.
Michigan needs to take this opportunity and come with a blitzing defense, an explosive rushing attack, and the occaisonal deep ball to keep the secondary from the box.

Another win that should have been more impressive.
Statistical dominance through most of the game that added up to fewer points than it should have, followed by relaxed defense at the end that almost made it a game.
They can't continue to play like that.
But with that said, I'll take 5-0.

well, it could be worse.

msu has had 5 of the worst consecutive qrts possible, and we're about to make it 9, i think.

cant get greedy jethro. this time last year, most michigan fans we're looking for a good place to hang themselves. im more than happy to collect win after win.

Typical Michigan win, dominant, but not a blowout. I'll take it and I think we are looking great. The defense was amazing (again), Henne looked sharp, Hart rushed for about 2 bills and Manningham could possibly be the best receiver in the country. We look great on both sides of the ball. 5-0 as Sparty comes into The Big House. Lovin' it! [smilie=thumbsup.gi:

Let's observe post-game celebrations/actions here.

Michigan State beats Notre Dame at ND and the Spartan players plant the State flag at midfield.

Minnesota beats Michigan at The Big House and the Gopher players sprint across the field, grab The Little Brown Jug and Maroney plants the Minnesota flag on the block M.

Illinois beats Michigan State at Michigan State and the Illini try to plant the flag, but the Michigan State players rush the field, starting a melee.

Michigan beats Minnesota at Minnesota and the entire Michigan team links arms, walks across the field and waits for The Little Brown Jug to be presented to them.

Which is the right way to do it?

eh, who cares?

i listened on the radio, and damn near every michigan player made a point to say how classy they are for doing that. im not sure if its still classy if you proceed to go on the radio to brag how classy you are.

but imo, not of it is a big deal.

The right way to do it is to lineup in front of the student section and sing the alma mater like 6th graders at camp.

Which way was freaking practiced? Which ones were spur of the moment?

Shocker that the practiced style is more organized and everything.

I think that practice thing works for things during the games as well.

Links are always nice, but it's silly that you are asking a guy for a link for something he says he heard on the radio. That's like someone saying they heard something from a friend and you ask them for a link.

Since the Muhme probably tapes AM1270 24-7, its probably just a case of not knowing he's the only person who might be able to link to an average radio show broadcast.

right. it wasnt a big deal, but every player interviewed (on the radio) wanted to talk about what classy thing it was they did. like i said, i think this is a non-issue, especially cuz theyre all still relatively kids. but if you want exact quotes, im sure any game story from the freep would include one.
