Paris Hilton Arrested for Investigation of Driving Under the Influence
Thursday , September 07, 2006
LOS ANGELES — Paris Hilton was arrested early Thursday for investigation of driving under the influence, police said.
Hilton was arrested shortly before 12:30 a.m. after being pulled over in Hollywood, said police Officer I. Isabella, who declined to give his first name.
"The officers observed that Hilton exhibited the symptoms of intoxication. A field sobriety test was conducted at scene, and the officers determined she was driving under the influence," Isabella said, reading from a police statement. He said officers stopped Hilton because she was "driving erratically."
Hilton, 25, was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and released on her own recognizance, he said.
Her spokesman, Elliot Mintz, confirmed the arrest and said police detected the minimum blood-alchohol level to warrant an arrest. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.
"She's absolutely fine," Mintz said. "She didn't appear in the least bit to be intoxicated."
At the time of her arrest, Hilton was driving home in her Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren from a charity event where she had one drink, a margarita, he said. She had spent the day shooting a music video for her new album, "Paris."
The DUI was "probably the result of an empty stomach and working all day and being fatigued," Mintz said.
She was picked up from the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood station by sister Nicky, Mintz, and her sister's boyfriend Kevin Connolly.
Video footage posted on the celebrity Web site TMZ.com showed Hilton arriving home after her release in Mintz's Mercedes-Benz, getting out of the passenger side with a cell phone to her ear and saying something inaudible to paparazzi before walking inside.
In June, Hilton had a fender-bender accident when her Range Rover backed into a car in a parking garage after a shopping trip.
Over the last few years, Hilton has become an international multimedia sensation — from the success of her reality show "The Simple Life" to last week's debut album "Paris."
More than anything, though, the slender socialite and her antics have been fodder for tabloids.
In early August, Hilton's publicist rushed her to an emergency room after her pet kinkajou Baby Luv bit her. In 2003, a videotape of her having sex with former boyfriend Rick Solomon became a cyberspace sensation. Last year, Hilton's cell phone was hacked into and its contents — her phone numbers and e-mail addresses — were posted on the Internet.
Mintz said this was Hilton's first drunken driving arrest.
The city attorney's office will decide whether to file charges after police submit their report, which was expected in the next few days, spokesman Nick Velasquez said.
Hilton would be unlikely to face jail time if she is convicted of a first offense. The mandatory minimum punishment is 36 to 60 months of probation and a $390 fine, although penalties could bring that up to about $1,300.
Hilton also would be ordered to enter an alcohol education program and, if she refused, could be ordered to spend at least 48 hours in jail. Her car could be impounded for up to 30 days.
The city attorney's office handles about 13,000 DUI cases each year and Hilton's will not receive special treatment because she is a celebrity, Velasquez said.
"The city attorney's office will handle this case in the same manner it will handle any case," he said.
