View Full Version : Steve Irwin, aka "The Crocodile Hunter" Killed By a Stingray, not a Crocodile
Black Dynamite 09-04-2006, 03:00 AM Reports: 'Crocodile Hunter' dead
POSTED: 1:11 a.m. EDT, September 4, 2006
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified.
Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.
Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following.
But his image suffered a setback in 2004 when he held his then one-month-old baby while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo.

Cross 09-04-2006, 05:38 AM probably pretty big for P as it is his home town.
[smilie=sayitaintso:
yeah sat it aint so
Black Dynamite 09-04-2006, 10:25 AM Could the sting ray have been Pharoah with a harpoon?
Seriously Steve Irwin was possibly the most entertaining guy on television and he did alot for wildlife and getting people into it. He became an icon and its too bad that he passed. RIP
DennyMcLain 09-04-2006, 11:28 AM ... but what a way to go. It's like a rock star death for naturalists!
Hermy 09-04-2006, 11:31 AM It's like if I drown in sloppy joe.
Black Dynamite 09-04-2006, 11:34 AM since i was never a fan of rockstar deaths. i'm not all that envious. and getting stabbed by a stingray underwaters sounds like a not so great feeling.
gusman 09-04-2006, 01:02 PM man this is sad news. i really liked that guy and his show. wife and kid as well. this sucks
Darth Thanatos 09-04-2006, 02:36 PM Of all the dangerous animals he's fucked with.......
......a fucking Sting Ray?!?
Man, what an anti-climatic way to die.
RIP. :(
He was an awesome entertainer. He'll be well missed.
i love nature shows, sucks he died :(
i remember watching an episode where a croc died and he was genuiely upset, weeping on camera. you can't say he wasn't passionate about his craft.

Wrong....wrong.
We think he was stabbed by a Stingray bard underwater -- THINK. The article never said it was ever caught on film, meaning foul play might be involved.
Check. Not like Jim Morrison, more like Brandon Lee.
Could have been SeAL 6 on a mission to kill an Aussie in order to please George Bush, who's hatred of Australia has been well documented.
This is EXACTLY like many of those murky rock star deaths, claimed as suicides, but with an interesting stench of skepticism to them.
The radio said that Queensland police have a film of the event (he was filming a documentary when it happened). They said he wasn't taunting the animal and reports are that the barb hit the guy in the heart and HE FUCKING PULLED THE SHIT OUT BEFORE HE DIED. Word is the film shows him pulling it out and then floating, dead man style, in the water.
That sounds a bit Chuck Norris-ish but impressive as hell if its true.

Must keep an eye out on YouTube for that shit. That's amazing. Very Taymelo-ish.

I wonder if he killed himself then in someways by being macho and not realizing the repercussions of pulling the tail out. They say whenever you get an object lodged in you, you should leave it in until the doctors can determine it's severity.
Considering the tail was barbed that means it goes in cleaner that it comes out so he most likely did more damage by pulling it out. Of course it is easy for me to play armchair Croc Hunter, but he should have cut off the tail from the Sting Ray. However I doubt he was affraid he was going to die considering it had been more than 60 years since a sting ray related death occured in OZ, and only 17 people worldwide have died from an attack the last couple years, so it is not a prominent/common sea life predator/threat.
Regardless it is still sad because he was a cool guy from all accounts, he sounded like he was an amazing and loving father (regardless of the media hype regarded his baby son) and really cared about educating the public.

T&P to the family, but that video of him bouncing his baby son on the ground in front of the crocodile is almost unwatchable, especially if you have kids.
But as I said, T&P.
i also read that it was filmed so yeah, youtube lookout. as far as pulling it out, it was the smartest thing to do. its a poison stinger, so he got a poison injection straight to the heart. from what i read his only option was to pull it out ASAP but since it was a straight injection it didnt matter and he died within a couple seconds. stingrays are no joke either... they can reach something like 15 feet and 500 pounds but i havent been able to find anything about the size of the one that got him.
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 01:48 PM I'm I the only one who couldnt' care less if someone famous dies?

Bingo. It wasn't the sting itself that killed him, it was the toxin that sent him into cardiac arrest.
I'm I the only one who couldnt' care less if someone famous dies?
Famous or not, he was a genuinely good guy. I always find this stuff funny - people care so little they take time to tell everybody about it.
Which one of you sick freaks is going to have the footage as their avatar?
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 04:03 PM He was a good guy...Not saying you DIDN'T meet him, but I'm doubting that you have.
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 04:06 PM And what I find is funny is that every time someone famous gets killed or dies, it's a top story on the news, when you're lucky to get a name in the paper if a soldier dies...

Black Dynamite 09-05-2006, 05:21 PM Famous or not, he was a genuinely good guy. I always find this stuff funny - people care so little they take time to tell everybody about it.
yea the guy was pretty down to earth and in love with his job. had no ill will towards wildlife or people. i'm not about to bash him on the general priciple of being famous if i thought highly of what i did know about him.
They typically don't post soldier names in the news stories about them dying because the news of them dying is usually out within hours or at the latest the next morning's paper, while it takes the armed forces longer to notify their family.
I'm sure mother's appreciate not finding out that their son or daughter has died over the morning coffee at the local restaurant.

I wouldn't care one way or another...I surely wouldn't go on and on about how good of a guy he was. The fact is that any of these deaths, croc guy, limbaugh would have ZERO effect on my life, Bush is a differant story since I work for the guy, but I bet it'd effect my life so little I wouldn't care anyway.

That is the biggest issue and why you can't compare the two. A lot of times they let the public know a soldier died but if the family doesn't know or doesn't consent to the name being released it doesn't come out. So as much as it smells of it not being a news story it is more a matter of respect for the family. Ususally by the time the name becomes public the soldier is about to be burried and therefore they do a week ending In Memorum on national TV because it is no longer a current event that makes the 30 minutes of news, sad but true..
Bush is a differant story since I work for the guy, but I bet it'd effect my life so little I wouldn't care anyway.

Are you a solider or government employee? Not that it matters because either way you work/serve for the office not the man. Life goes on quicly in that field, 1 second after he flat lines you have a new boss.

And you would doubt wrong. I met him at the San Diego Zoo, he was doing a Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno appearence the next day or something. He was very friendly, and clearly enjoyed what he did. At least he got to go out doing something he loved. All I'm saying is the man died, and if you don't care so much why do you need to tell everybody?
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 06:48 PM Just the Navy...Stationed on the USS Ronald Reagan out of San Diego...Just got back from deployment in July.

Tahoe 09-05-2006, 08:27 PM What I'm trying to reconcile is the sympathy for his family and kids, but no angst towards him for making them fatherless.
Shouldn't there be some slight criticism of him putting himself in danger when he is a father? Maybe I'm wrong here, but there is something that I still find difficult about this whole thing.

i don't think that's really fair, Tahoe. is a soldier/police officer/fire fighter less of a father because he puts himself in harm's path?
Tahoe 09-05-2006, 08:44 PM See Matt thats why I'm kind of still fighting with this and said I could be wrong. But he was an entertainer, not a policeman. I would argue that what he did as an entainer was NOT necesary like a fire fighter, policeman, soldier, etc. And his entertainer type of status made him do things that, imo, he shouldn't have.
When i first heard this, I thought...'feelings for the kids...and then WTF was he thinking?
Hermy 09-05-2006, 09:16 PM He was a conservationist.
Tahoe 09-05-2006, 09:23 PM He was a conservationist.
And an entertainer. I was just watching him mowing his lawn while a croc was right next to him and he kept dodging it. Thats entertainment to me.
Hermy 09-05-2006, 09:28 PM Did you learn anything?
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 09:29 PM He was a conservationist.
Also, kinda dumb for fucking with crocs, IMO.
Tahoe 09-05-2006, 09:29 PM Monty Cox just said that one account of what happened was that he cornered it and the Ray had shown a stay away behavior and then attacked him.
Not sure who Monty Cox is but happened to be watching a segement on him.
Tahoe 09-05-2006, 09:33 PM Did you learn anything?
I can't say that I did from his entertaining part. I'm thinking he could have stuck to showing parts of the world, showing the animals and even up close at times. A lot of it was over-the-top...completely unecesary on the educational part.

LOL. You can't be serious Tahoe. People put themselves in dangerous situations all the time. He was more likely to die in a car accident on his way to work a "safe Job" than he was to get a Stingray barb in the chest.

That's exactly why he had a TV show. Any goober can do a voiceover.
Also, kinda dumb for fucking with crocs, IMO.
Yeah, especially considering a Croc got him.
The guy is dead people, pay your respects or don't. There is no need to critique every life decision Steve Irwin made (especially considering some of you apparently don't care).
If you don't think entertainers play as big of a role in general quality-of-life as police officers or firemen, especially one of his scale, then you're not even worth discussing this with.
cruscott35 09-05-2006, 10:33 PM The worst fire fighter ever >>>>> Steve Irwin
And, if a member of Croc Boys family is reading this, I'm sorry, but people die, especially those who fuck with wild animals...Just ask the white Tiger fag, he pumped those kitties every night and they still went ape shit on him.

At fighting fires, of course. In terms of world impact, they're not even comparable. You're right, people die when they fuck with wild animals. They also die when they play with electricity or fire. I'm sure glad people like you aren't that common - we'd still be living in mudhuts.
White Tiger fag, lol. This is coming from a Navy guy, right?

No, in terms of more productive.
And you don't die working with electricity if you're safe about it. You don't see me working on a live 4160 volt breaker, sticking my head in there while someone opens and shuts it, screaming "Isn't she gorgeous?" Why? Because that is stupid, and dangerous, although, because it's dangerous, people would also find it entertaining.
And, also, you're the first person today to make the navy/gay joke. Original, you should open for Dane Cook or something.

I'm sure his life insurance premium would show that while he had a rather low chance of the specific instance of dying via sting ray barb to the heart, he sure as hell had a higher chance of dying via animal attack then your average commuter does of dying at a "safe job".
And you don't die working with electricity if you're safe about it.
Irwin's last words to his wife on the day that he died were "you don't die from working with animals if you're careful".

More productive? You're fucking kidding me, right? I won't even get into the logistics that he was teaching as he was entertaining (something that can't really be measured). The man generated money - more money than many fire departments save from fire over a year. If only fighting fires was all we needed to make a society great. I won't even get into the electrocution garbage, do a search on yearly deaths from electricity/lightning and then tigers and get back to me on it.
I figured you'd appreciate the irony of a guy serving in the most homoerotic Armed Service in the world calling somebody a "fag". Stereotypes are fun, are they not?

Definately not jealous of a dead guy, I just always think its funny how butt hurt people act when someone famous dies...They get all emotional and act sorry, and maybe you really are, but to announce it, and proclaim it, just comes off to me as self serving, like people want to be seen doing what they suspect is the right thing to do in that situation.

thats uppity jealous IMO.
1.) the fuck do you care? please dont say you dont because your 2 page barrage says otherwise?
2.) you're assuming way more than whats being said. giving someone condolences isnt as big a deal as you're making it. saying its too bad and that he's a good guy doesnt mean we'll be at his funeral. no one has gotten overly emotional over him dying not once in this thread. If anything they're stuck defending him from your hating on him like its a travesty that people give out condolences to him. You dont want to give him condolences. Oh Well, too bad. Thats your perogative. How exactly does that fit in to other people doing it?
cruscott35 09-06-2006, 01:07 AM Because NOONE even remotely close to Steve Irwin is going to EVER see this. That's my issue with it...It's one thing if his wife was a poster here, as far as I know she's not, so it's fucking dumb.
You hit the nail on the head though, it's uppity jealousy. Thanks Freud.
gusman 09-06-2006, 01:21 AM if there is a god and if there is a heaven steve could be reading this message board
cruscott35 09-06-2006, 01:42 AM And if he's in heaven, he's so happy playing with angelic crocs and sting rays that won't kill him he doesn't care.

I think I'll pass my opening gig for Dane Cooke to you. You're clearly the superior comedian.

Freud would indeed have a field day with your anger and resentment towards a community of people having a shared experience marking the passing of someone whose work they were all familiar with. Is it that you've never felt a part of anything yourself so you attack it? Deep seated fear that no one would notice if you died? I'd go further with this but I'd have to charge you $400/hour.
Pharaoh 09-06-2006, 11:38 AM While Steve's wife isn't ever going to read this I'll be sure to pass it on to a friend of mine who works at their zoo the next time I see him.
I'm certain the staff would all love to read this thread.
cruscott35: Never assume anything. I live in Cairns and know a few people who actually saw Steve Irwin that day and/or worked with him regularly.
He was the nicest fucking guy you could ever possibly meet and because of him a ton of stupid fuckers like yourself have more knowledge about certain animals.
So, fuck you and have a nice day, dickhead
Glenn 09-06-2006, 11:46 AM Also, you never really know who reads what. Case in point: http://wtfdetroit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6714
Pharaoh 09-06-2006, 11:54 AM Oh, and for the record:
R.I.P Steve. You will be missed
b-diddy 09-06-2006, 12:34 PM hey guys, havent read the thread, but i'll just throw this out there:
I'm I the only one who couldnt' care less if someone famous dies?
j/k. i've only seen the guy on letterman, but this seems pretty sad. not too many people like their job as much as this guy seemed to.
Uncle Mxy 09-06-2006, 04:58 PM He died as he lived, and he loved his wild life. It's not a happy time for the people who feel a bond with him. But it's a more poetic and appropriate end than, say, dying of an allergic reaction prompting a cerebral edema.

You are the fucking man.
RIP Steve...you were an icon to us all.
Tahoe 09-08-2006, 04:16 PM I didn't realize this was a 'condolences only' thread.
I read the first 5(?) and it appeared to me to be a typical thread on a message board where topics are discussed...where every posters thoughts are welcomed.
I see now that this is a thread where you should only post if you agree with a certain sentiment. I just wish it was spelled out at the begining.

It's not a "condolences only" thread, it's just about showing a decent guy who died some respect. Your thoughts are welcome but when you say something as dumb as "Shouldn't people be mad at him for doing a possibly dangerous job when he has kids!? LOL!!" and not expect a little outrage. That's some of the dumbest shit I've seen posted on this board. The guy wasn't a crack dealer for fuck sake, he was a teacher/naturalist/conservationist/entertainer/zoologist/enviromentalist.
Tahoe 09-08-2006, 05:55 PM Oh ok, so I thought this was a typical thread on a message board where posters could post their thoughts, but now I find out if you don't toe-the-line...."about showing a decent guy who some respect", zip it.
Damn, since when does everyone have to feel the same fucking thing about every fucking thing. And I still feel the same way when I see peeps on the tube crying over his kids growing up fatherless. Did Steve's actions have something to do with that?
I feel for his kids, wife and him, but I put some of this on his shoulders. If you want say thats the dumbest shit you've read on this board, then you haven't been reading boards very long.

You don't have to the same opinion, but critiquing a dead man just screams "pathetic" to me. If that's what you're going for, congrats.
Tahoe 09-08-2006, 07:12 PM "critiquing a dead man just screams "pathetic" to me"
Now THAT is some of the dumbest shit I've seen posted on this board.
Look, moving the fucking lawn with a huge croc in the lawn attempting to attack the lawnmower is entertainment and is dangerous. I could see some kids moving their lawn in Florida and saying I saw Stevie do it. Stupid, imo.
I just don't see the man as God, like you do.

Oh really? You must not read any of your posts then.
It wasn't up to Steve Irwin to raise your fucking kids. He's a trained professional, and if your kids can't make the connection that they shouldn't mow (which I assume is what you meant) the lawn while a Croc is on it then you're not doing your job as a parent. So not only is Steve Irwin a careless asshole who purposely left his children fatherless, he's corrupting our youth right?
Where did I mention him being a God? I'm simply giving him the same basic respect you should give for any decent human who just died. I'm not the guy that needs to bring down a dead man to make myself feel better. All I can say is that when you pass, I hope the people that knew you show you more respect than you've been showing here.
Tahoe 09-08-2006, 09:41 PM Why did I even waste my time talking to you...Come back when you make it to 1st grade.
Bring down a dead man to make myself feel better... LOL This IS the dumbest shit I've EVER read on a board. Hopefully your fucking kids don't listen to you.
Good bye.
Black Dynamite 09-09-2006, 12:10 PM ya'll both are acting a little too much crazy over this.
Tahoe i must admit though that this statement was pretty naive.

if you blaming Steve for anything that kids do. then you have no idea of parenting. i hope that doesnt come across as offensive. but its true. For clarity you're not alone. Theres plenty of parents who'd say that same naive statement. Same ones blame tv for their kids bad habits rather than blaming themselves for letting tv raise their kids. Also, where do you live that crocs are on your front lawn?[smilie=burgerking.: Thats a nasty place. Bayou maybe?
Seriously people need to lighten up on both ends. No Steve Irwin doesnt deserve everyones condolences. I thought he was a nice guy. But thats just me. No need to put that on someone else. But on the other hand theres no need to hate on the guy and air a bunch of meaningless beefs towards him now that he's dead. Its like a muthafucka gets jealous of a dead man getting more attention than he'll ever get living or dead, when truthfully that doesnt matter.
