View Full Version : Andew Miller Called Up!
H1Man 08-27-2006, 08:10 PM - Mike Maroth not starting against the Yankees on Wednesday. Instead, Ledezma will take his place.
- Andrew Miller will be called up to fill the second lefty spot in the bullpen.
- Colby Lewis optioned back to Toledo.
- Brent Cleven back to Double A Erie and Alexis Gomez called up from Triple A Toledo.
H1Man 08-27-2006, 08:22 PM For all the talk about how he always takes talent above anything else when choosing players to be on the roster, Jim Leyland really doesn't follow his own word.
Clevlen did nothing to deserve a demotion. Not only is he better than Gomez but there is only one week left in the Double A season. So I don't really see why the Tigers choose to send him down.
DrRay11 08-27-2006, 08:48 PM What the fuck? Clevlen should remain on the big league club. I'm pissed.

Good chance he'll be back up real soon when the roster expands

Danny Knobler said Clevlen will be back by Friday, Sunday at the latest. None of these move are to be read into too much. Bottomline is Yankee arms are right handed thus LH hitters are better match ups. Yankee hitters are LH so the more LH pitchers we have the better the match up. But come Sept 1st the roster expands and everybody who is worth a damn and is healthy in the system is on the bench for the rest of reg season. There has even been talks of getting Maybin some P/T if we get rolling again.
Darth Thanatos 08-28-2006, 01:50 AM Too bad. I liked the platoon CF we were working with lately. And this also takes away our defensive flexibility in the outfield. Clevlen plays all three spots, HGomez can only play one, maybe two with RF.
I'm eager to see how Miller will do when we throw him to the dogs in that dump NY.
H1Man 08-29-2006, 03:04 PM Clevlen is going to be backup soon, I know that. But what pisses me off is the fact that he won't be eligible to be on the playoff roster.
What does Gomez offer that makes him so invaluable that we have to have him on the playoff roster?
H1Man 08-29-2006, 03:40 PM From Beck's Blog:
Roster moves
To make room for Alexis Gomez on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated for assignment the contract of Nook Logan. Plus, the Tigers called up Tony Giarratano and placed him on their 15-day DL while he recovers from ACL surgery.
I would imagine that Giarratano is going to be on the 60-day DL by the 1st.

On WDFN yesterday via MLive transcript and audio, Knobler said that Clevelen along with anyone in the minors is eligible for the playoff roster if we have guys on the DL.
Q: Can you explain how the 40-man roster works, and when they have to decide who will be on the playoff roster?
A: It's complicated, but I'll try to explain: Technically, to be on the roster on August 31 that is the playoff roster. On the other hand, anyone on the disabled list on August 31 is also eligible for the playoff roster. Obviously Polanco will be on the DL. He's going to be activated and will be on the roster if he's healthy.
The other side of it is that they have Troy Percival, Craig Dingman, Roman Colon, and they could have Tony Girrantano on the disabled list in the major league. When you get to October and make out your playoff roster, you're allowed to take anyone who is on the major league disabled list and replace him with anyone who is in the same organization on August 31, assuming it's the same position. Meaning, position player for position player and pitcher for pitcher.
Even if Andrew Miller had not been on the major league roster this week, before August 31, they could have said "Andrew Miller is replacing Troy Percival, so he's in there." Anyone who is in the minor leagues right now could be put on the playoff roster.
Q: Does it help them to have more guys on the DL?
A: Yes, to a certain extent it does. That doesn't mean they won't pack people on the DL. The White Sox did something like that. They took a player from their minor leagues on the 40 man roster, recalled him to the majors and put him on the major league DL. The Tigers could do the same thing with Tony Girrantano, which would give them a position player on the DL that could be replaced by a position player.
On the other hand, you can only do that for a couple of guys. You don't have 10 guys on the DL, so you want to have some spots saved for the playoff roster.
The Clevelen for Gomez switch had something to do with that. He will be back up on Sunday. They sent him to Erie because their season ends soon. He will be here all through September, and there could be a switch to put him on the playoff roster. But, they think Alexis Gomez could be more helpful. Most of the guys on their bench are right handed.
For example, against a right-hander they didn't have any left handed hitters on the bench. They had them all in the lineup. You may want a lefty in the playoffs who can come in when you have a certain situation.
H1Man 08-29-2006, 05:34 PM It's my understanding that players on the 60-day DL can only be replaced with a player from the same position. That's why I figured that Clevlen is not eligible to be on the playoff roster.

The way Knobler explained it was the guy only had to be a position player to replace a postion player not a SS for SS for example. There for I would assume Clevlen would be okay but on the same note, I guess worse comes to worse the team could have Gomez go the DL with spasms after he makes the roster and Clevlen is back eligible that way. With that said I don't know beyond what I heard this is all new to me, interms of call ups and August 31st roster rules we never have been this good since I was 7.
Moodini31 08-30-2006, 07:20 PM I don't understand why Clevlen has been sent down. I mean, what more can a guy do? 2 hits in his first game, 2 homeruns in his second game, a monster shot over the Green Monster, and the guy has a freaking gun for an arm. I don't get it.
b-diddy 08-30-2006, 07:29 PM dont worry about clevelen, its a non issue. but quite frankly, i hope he gets a fair shot at taking lots of granderson's AB's.
and im flabbergasted about magglio. leyland was criticized for resting him too much and he's still gassed. wtf? to me, he needs an extended break. too bad we desperately need him, and need him going now, not in a month.
btw, i only heard it on the radio, but sounds like miller had a nice debut. would have been 1/2/3, but his sinker didnt sink and he hit a guy. they were raving about him on the radio though.
