View Full Version : Detroit Shock win 2006 WNBA Championship

Uncle Mxy

They have to win one of the next two in Connecticut, and one of Connecticut's best players broke a bone or something so they just might make it. But, unlike NBA playoffs, the WNBA ones have back-to-backs, so the Shock either have to win today or tomorrow, which is fucked. I hope they win it all, though.

(Yeah, the only reason I so much as noticed this is because the NBA is fucking dullsville at this exact moment.)

Detroit 77

Connecticut 53

Shock win the series 2-1 and advance to the finals!

So proud of my girls tonight. They punched those prissy bitches in the mouth and now we're back in the finals.

I do.

I watch the WNBA from time to time, and I'll probably watch the WNBA Finals.

And no, I'm not gay.

Deanna "Lady Iverson" Nolan and Cheryl Ford are two players I'd gladly pay to watch play basketball.

Greanted, I wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks, but the fact is I'd pay to see them.

Any Woman who can grab 23 rebounds in a playoff game I have a lot of respect for. She plays the power forward postition like a dude.

As for Deanna Nolan, she's got a lot of streetball in her. She's got as nasty a crossover as I've ever seen on a lady, and she's got speed to burn.

I won't lie and say I'm a big follower of the WNBA, but I'm a fan of those two girls, and whenever they're in the playoffs, I'll watch. The Shock when they're on their game play entertaining basketball exactly the way you wouldn't expect women to play it.

I wish more people got to see them kick the shit out of connecticut last night. They were physically beating the crap out of the other girls, it was hilarious.

Maybe when laimbeer leaves and they lose some of their unique players I'll go back to not caring about the Shock. But I have to admit, Laimbeer's "bad boys" style applied to women's basketball is rather hilarious. WHat makes it even funnier is the fact that it's working.

Kstat
08-28-2006, 05:38 PM
As an added bonus, Laimbeer is always mic'd every second of every game, so it's a treat to listen to him cuss out his players whenever they screw up.....

I broke down the Finals match-up on another board. Screw Glenn and his sexist homoerotic isolationism. The WNBA isn't top flight ball, but its got its moments and the playoffs are easily watchable. Besides, cheering on a Detroit team is time well spent. The Palace is about to be on 5 Championship Drive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that a few of you enjoy it.

I just don't see the point in following a woman athlete that plays "almost as good as a man", but I feel the same way about men's minor league sports, and even college sports to some degree.

Why waste time watching less than the best?

I fully realize that I'm in the minority with this opinion.

Matt
08-29-2006, 09:41 AM
i'll catch myself watching it if there's nothing else on TV. that's after i've seen the current episode of Celebrity Poker for the 100th time. if the Shock make it to the Finals, i might watch.

They already made it to the Finals you boob.

I don't like women's basketball... I think it's slow, their "talent" is horrendous, and they have absolutely no athleticism.

That being said, I love Detroit. And I root for the Shock and hope they win this thing because it's fun to see Detroit have more championships. I just wish it was the Pistons that would have changed the Palace address to 5 Championship Drive.

Kstat
08-29-2006, 04:10 PM
If you don't find Deanna Nolan and Cheryl Ford to be athletic, you're blind. They're both breaking the mold of the typical woman athlete.

Nolan is the fastest ballhandler in WNBA history (the first woman I've seen to turn the crossover into a weapon), and Ford is the best female rebounder ever, period. She gets 15-20 rebounds in a league where everyone else averages 4-8. That's how far ahead she is ahead of every other woman in the league.

FYI, game 1 is at the palace 7:30 against the defending champs from sacramento. Finals are a best of 5 now.

If for no other reason, watch because the shock are the first female basketball team in history to play a physical style that's usually reserved for men.

Interesting boxscore:

Swin Cash and Ruth Riley did nada. The opponents were 10-19 from three (is that NBA range?). Geezus...

Fool

No, its the same as FIBA's 6.25 meters (20 feet 6 inches).

Sacramento owned the glass, many of those threes were second chance kick-outs wide open. It was a pitiful performance from the Shock inside. Though Laimbeer did intimidate a ref out of giving him a technical, which was quite amusing to watch happen (the camera was isolated on him and the ref the whole time and he's mic'ed the whole game and his comments run in real time not in just pre-recorded segment highlights, they have to bleep him a lot).

So these ladies are *almost* as good as men, and the Shock played *almost* as well as the Pistons in the playoffs.

I guess you guys were right after all.

Say what? I couldn't hear you over all that pounding steel.

(Seriously, I don't know what you are talking about since no one in favor of the team claimed they were "almost" anything compared to men.)

BTW, they outperformed the Pistons even if they are swept in the Finals. Have you forgotten already?

The Shock surrender just 15 points in the entire 2nd half, win by 20. The last game is in Detroit, in Joe Louis Arena.

This One's for the girls

This is for all you girls about 13
High school can be so rough, can be so mean
Hold on to, on to your innocence
Stand your ground when everybody's givin' in

This one's for the girls

This is for all you girls about 25
In little apartments, just tryin' to get by
Livin' on, on dreams and spaghettios
Wonderin' where your life is gonna go

CHORUS
This one's for the girls
Who've ever had a broken heart
Who've wished upon a shooting star
You're beautiful the way you are
This one's for the girls
Who love without holdin' back
Who dream with everything they have
All around the world
yeah 3rd time only
This One's for the girls
(This one's for all the girls) - 1st time only
This is for all you girls about 42
Tossin' pennies into the fountain of youth
Every laugh, laugh line on your face
Made you who you are today

REPEAT CHORUS

Yeah, we're all the same inside (same inside)
From 1 to 99

REPEAT CHORUS

(This one's for all the girls)
Yeah, this one's for the girls
(This one's for all the girls)

That was an incredibly 2nd half by the shock. They flat-out dominated defensively.

Also helps when the captain of the other team is such a horrific shooter that you can leave her wide open the entire 2nd half and let them play 4 on 5....

That third quarter was just incredible. The Monarchs looked like they didn't belong on the same floor as the Shock. They let up at the end of the game a little early but Katie Smith is automatic and kept the Monarchs from any serious contention.

5 Championship Drive.

....and a new arenas...and rennovations on said arena.....and lowered ticket prices on said team in said arena...

Not to mention he hand-picked both Jack McCloskey and Joe Dumars to run his team.

Did anyone know he didn't want to pay Ben Wallace $20 million a year? He's evil.

3 NBA titles
2 WNBA titles
1 Stanley Cup

LOL @ liking him becasue he renovated his own arena to bring in additional revenue. He's like Jesus in the way he gives to his fans. A big Jewish Jesus......wait.
Not paying Ben is fine, choosing not to pay someone else in turn after dumping salary for years to pay him is not reconcilable. He does a great job putting great people in places to run the team, then he grabs them by the balls when the $ becomes the issue.

Kstat
09-09-2006, 07:13 PM
LOL.

We traded Darko because Darko wanted out. Clearing salary to re-sign ben was secondary.

Davidson never went to Joe D and said "trade darko so we can have more money to pay ben." That's a stupid assumption.

He didn't want to MASSIVELY overpay Ben Wallace. That's why people want him to drop dead (which, I might add, is sick). Big flipping deal.

Hermy
09-09-2006, 07:28 PM
I want him to die...dar,,,,thats gross....I;mm mean.........because we put Arroyo in the deal ONLY FOR A SALARY DUMP ON OUR WAY TO A TITLE! Not that he was anything great, but you don't throw away a rotation guy who's great in the locker room on the way to a championship run for fun. and Corliss.......Do you disagree either of those players were strictly money vs. the potential to have a better team, both under the guise of "keeping the team together"? Cause thats the bill I was sold.

Again, don't care about ben, but then get something else.

Kstat
09-09-2006, 07:35 PM
1. THis thing called the salary cap prevented us from spending more money. We spent every exception we had alread.

2. Arroyo was not going to make a difference. He played no D and couldnt shoot on this team, for whatever reason.

3. Corliss sucked in the 04 playoffs. We won the title despite him. He was hardly a great loss.

Hermy
09-09-2006, 07:40 PM
I didn't say either was great, but you must admit they are better than Hunter and Dupree (or a tired Tay on Duncan).

There are plenty of ways to add salary and in turn talent in an offseason. Don't play stupid.

THis Laimbeer gem was priceless....

We joke a lot with our ballclub, and one of the things that we were laughing about was we would like nothing better than to go downtown and play in Joe Louis Arena and have Doris Burke actually have to go and stay in downtown Detroit. She'll probably stay in her hotel room the whole time. That was one of our driving forces today.

This was absolutely huge for me out here in Sac. I don't follow the Shock that much, but to get the smack talking was out of control when the Monarchs were up. So this week on the Golf course and at the club, the boys are going to be hearing it.

The Sacramento Bee had Laimbeer as the number one 'hated(?)' sports figure or something like that. I think when he put himself front and center it took some pressure off the ladies. I'm giving him some cred here.

This was great fun.
