View Full Version : Was trading Carlos Arroyo a mistake?
Glenn 08-23-2006, 03:40 PM As usual, he's lighting it up in international play.
So was including him in the Darko deal another mistake by Joe?
Was his contract that much of an albatross?
Would he have thrived as our primary backup PG this year?
Discuss.
He needs freedom to run a team (ala Steve Nash) and in all seriousness our team does not fit that bill at all.
Under Flip's (garbage) system he was given sufficient minutes and just had a knack for having his hands glued to the ball. Plus, he can't play D for shit and it's been the signature of this team's mentality for the past years.
Hell, even in international play he gets touchy and stupid fouls... he's a momentum killer and he didn't fit here.
yeah, watching Arroyo play for his team vs the US, he looked like the same Arroyo that frustrated everyone: overdribbling to the point where he take the shot himself.
now the other european guy we traded.........
Uncle Mxy 08-23-2006, 04:16 PM The Arroyo we had couldn't buy a bucket.
The Arroyo Utah, Orlando, Puerto Rico, etc. didn't have that problem.
Even so, he could still do flashy passing and was worth a first round pick.
Had we gotten an two picks back from Orlando instead of just the one, I'd feel a lot better about the Orlando trade. I didn't have a problem trading him. I had a problem with what we got back, which was only salary relief and not a lot of it.

I agree 100%
Like him or not, he should have had more value than what we got in return.
His contract could have been used in another trade.
Even our stingy owner would have approved trading Arroyo for an expiring deal for this year, I would think.
But I guess this all goes back to them not thinking Ben would leave.
UberAlles 08-23-2006, 05:18 PM BEN LEFT? WTF? FILL ME IN?
{/WHYT RHINO IMPERSONATION}
I'd take him over what we have left.

WTFchris 08-24-2006, 07:22 AM Not a mistake. His shooting was erratice and not good here. Also, he held the ball way too long, which kills Flip's offense. Bad fit is about all you can say.

I agree 100%.
Although the cap relief wasnt much and we got a first round pick in a great draft.
micknugget 08-24-2006, 11:48 AM Arroyo is a mediocre point guard at best. He is a poor shooter who over dribbles the ball way too much and doesn't play defense for sh$t. I'm just glad that we got rid of his contract. It's always nice to get something of value in return for a guy but he really isn't worth very much and Joe D. should have known that when he went from 1st to 4th string in Utah.

The maddening thing is that Arroyo isn't such a poor shooter anywhere else. He shot 37% FG here, but nearly 45% everywhere else, and that's with more low-% three attempts a game for the other teams. Sure he's streaky -- he'd start if he weren't. But he never really had any good streaks with us in 90 games, under two different coaches and offensive schemes.
Jerry Sloan managed to get a low-1st round pick for him as a 4th string guy who wasn't doing jack shit (perhaps because of Arroyo, perhaps because of Sloan losing his mind that season -- there's ample evidence of that). Dumars throw him in as ballast when he's among the league leaders in assists-to-TO? I think he could've done better for Arroyo alone, and Darko alone should've commanded the pick we got from Orlando.
Big' DARTH 08-24-2006, 01:35 PM Trading away Arroyo = no
Trading away Darko = yes
b-diddy 08-24-2006, 08:25 PM to me, arroyo is like a poor man's starburry.
he needs to be in complete control at all times, or he's not a very good player. and if he is in control, he really isnt that good either.
id much rather have a ball hawking pg like hunter off the bench than arroyo.
Joe Asberry 08-24-2006, 11:06 PM trading for Arroyo was a mistake, we gave up a first round pick for him...
Uncle Mxy 08-25-2006, 07:35 AM Of course, unless we had planned on Ben leaving, I doubt we would've done anything terribly useful with #30 (e.g. drafting Paul Davis who I bet will be better than Mateen). Hell, we might've taken Blalock in the 1st round...
