View Full Version : What is Josh Southern doing?!

Southern set up a press conference to announce his college choice for August 22nd. Southern has apparantly narrowed down his decision to five schools and MSU/UM are among the Top 5. I just don't get the feeling he's going to MSU. He's kindof a bonus recruit in my mind. If Izzo gets him, great! Big body to go along with our high flyers coming in. If he doesn't, no biggie.

Now to the meat of the post: What the hell is he doing with this announcement?! Doesn't he know that the 22nd is Maddenoliday?!! What an idiot! Nobody is going to be tuning in for the announcement, they are going to be trying out the new Martz offense and subbing in the big bitches (Rogers/M. Williams). Geez! Wait a day or something. Waaaaait...maybe he's trying to make the day even better with a Sparty announcement.

I don't really care about this much, because I have zero feeling that he could go to Michigan. And if he goes to State, who cares, nothing new. State has had far better talent than Michigan in basketball for at least a decade. One more 4 star PF isn't going to matter.
Michigan still in the top 5? Ok. Wow. That doesn't mean much. His comments about Michigan have been closer to "They're still in it". He's never, that I've found, said anything like "Oh yeah, Michigan is definitely a possiblity. Amaker and I hit it off and I like what they're doing a lot!"
I'm guessing he ends up someplace like Bitch-ass Kentucky. Actually, I would put State as the most likely, then Kentucky, then someplace like UConn or Indiana.
As for the timing, he's probably trying to get it out of the way so he can play Madden himself. He did start at QB for the High, after all.

I checked out Southern's profile. Rivals has something like a dozen teams listed, all with meidum interest.
Scout, on the other hand, has Boston College as high interest, Kentucky and Tennessee as medium, and everyone else that was listed at one time is now no interest.

My guess = Kentucky

MSU doesn't have a schollie as best as I can tell, if they do, I think that we get him, but I don't think that we do, so he'll help save Tubby's job.

I'm not sure Michigan has one either (a scholarship, that is). I'm not saying that's the reason why they won't get him, just pointing it out. We gave too many scholarships to the class of 2006, thanks to Peanut man, so it hurt us for 2007. I think we have 5 guys for that class when you add Peanut to Sims, Morris, Udoh and Wright. The 2007 class has Grady, Legion and Harris, plus transfer Zach Gibson will be eligible to play at that point. Now the interesting thing is that most websites aren't showing peanut as part of the 2006 class (I can't even remember the kid's name anymore, but I think I would recognize it if I saw it), and they aren't showing Gibson in the class of 2007, so I don't know if they are counting against the numbers or not. Martell Webb is listed for 2007 but he'll be there on a football scholarship. I heard a rumor that after his freshman year Grady will play both sports as well, and that his schollie will be transferred to football too. I have no idea how any of that impacts the scholarship situation for the future, but it could make for a very deep team.
Anyhow, as it relates to Southern, I still stand by the feeling that scholarship available or not, we're not honestly in the running. He's just being nice by mentioning us in the top 5.

I did some research and apparently MSU doesn't have a schollie to give him. They were going to try to switch Neitzel or Naymick to an academic schollie because they are killing it in the classroom to free up a spot, but I don't think it happened.

The other possibility is that Naymick isn't/won't be given the Medical RS this year. As it was pretty close to the limit it might not have come through, and we are using his schollie. Or maybe that new Grad school crap doesn't count towards the mandatory 13.

There are a couple possibilities, but to the best of my knowledge we have no scholarships left.

It was Boston College. Big whoop.
