View Full Version : Official Cy Young Watch
b-diddy 08-08-2006, 12:45 PM DOWN GOES LIRIANO!!
i'd have to say JV's cy young chances just doubled, atleast. not only did liriano get lit last night, his arm seems burned out, and its likely hes done for the year.
verlander is tied with schilling for wins, but schilling's era is ~ one whole point higher than verlander's (who leads active pitchers if liriano is done).
Jethro34 08-08-2006, 02:07 PM They doubled as long as he doesn't follow suit.
And while Schilling may be old, the writers often seem like they enjoy giving out awards to people with careers that back up up the performance that year, even though that should have absolutely nothing to do with it. So basically if Verlander ended up with similar numbers to Schilling, Halladay, Zito and Santana, Verlander would probably end up 5th in the voting.
Also, writers are solidly sucking Papelbon's privates and he'll likely finish ahead of Verlander as well. I'm not saying any of this is right, just saying that's how it is. Even though Papelbon is a rookie as well, the fact that he's in Boston and his ERA is 0.64 push him beyond Verlander.
If the season ended today, I predict the voting would be as follows:
(interesting because it doesn't completely support what I said above)
1 - Schilling
2 - Halladay
3 - Papelbon
4 - Santana
5 - Verlander
6 - Beckett
7 - Zito
8 - Jenks/Liriano
WTFchris 08-08-2006, 02:08 PM I think if the numbers are very similar, the tie should go to the team with the better record.
DrRay11 08-08-2006, 02:27 PM Fuck a CY. I'm more worried about JV's health long-term.
b-diddy 08-08-2006, 03:34 PM i agree with you jethro, maybe. but i think if JV has the most wins, and also a significant lead in era, he'd have to win it. or atleast thats what i hope.
liriano was getting a ton of love. he would have won it, imo, if he stayed healthy. now that hes done, maybe the hype shifts to JV.
b-diddy 08-11-2006, 12:45 PM down goes schilling!!...?
(And Curt Schilling is out of the running for the AL Cy, as far as I'm concerned; his new "top stat" is giving up an AL record-tying 10 extra-base hits.)
down goes papelbon!!...?
in last two games has pitched 2.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 2 blown saves, and 1 loss.
we should just shut JV down. it seems he could only hurt his cy chances by pitching.
Anthony 08-11-2006, 12:46 PM JV's been getting a lot of love from ESPN lately as well. Prehaps that'll help his chances?
H1Man 08-29-2006, 06:05 PM Johan Santana: 15-5, 3.01 ERA, 196Ks
Roy Halladay: 16-4, 3.12 ERA, 111Ks
Justin Verlander: 15-7, 3.42 ERA, 106Ks
Franciso Liriano: 11-3, 1.96 ERA, 110Ks
Curt Schilling: 14-6, 3.95 ERA, 167Ks
Jon Garland: 15-4, 4.43 ERA, 85Ks
Chien-Ming Wang: 15-5, 3.83 ERA, 59K s
As it stands right now, it's a Halladay-Santana race IMO.
Glenn 09-06-2006, 11:04 AM I think Santana just about sealed it last night. His numbers are unreal.
I know it's not supposed to be a "career award", and he certainly deserves the award based just on this season alone, but he is something like 42-9 in his career after the All Star game. That is just obscene.
Cross 09-06-2006, 11:15 AM and he just toasted the devil rays.
He is also leading the league in striekouts.
b-diddy 09-06-2006, 12:03 PM yup. only chance verlander had was if everything went right... ie: not so may of those blowup starts he's had recently, and games where he doesnt allow one run over 7 innings he needs to win. maybe next year.
H1Man 11-16-2006, 03:36 PM Santana it is.
