TONY DELK TO REPLACE SPANOULIS FOR PAO
Published: August 6, 2006 12:44 Basketball, Greece

It seems that after one month of seeking mr Obradovic' research has come to an end. The 32 year old NBA veteran Tony Delk and the club's management reached a few hours ago at an oral agreement of cooperation and all that remains is Delk signing his new contract which is expected to bring him 1,8 million euros for one season.

The experienced shooting guard has offered his services in a series of NBA teams during his career like Hornets, Warriors, Kings, Suns, Celtics, Dallas, Hawks and Pistons. In a decade of NBA action he has provided 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while he is also a sharp three point shooter.

Should the deal becomes true Panathinaikos will conclude their summer moves which so far have included signing Robertas Javtokas, Ramunas Siskauskas, Sani Becirovic and Dimos Dikoudis. At the same time the club has released Jaka Lakovic (Barcelona), Vasilis Spanoulis (Houston Rockets), Patrick Femerling (Caja San Fernando) and Giorgos Kalaitzis.

Pao's talented point guard Xanthopoulos has also returned to the squad after being on a loan for one season to Paok.

It's not like they had Dupree replace Delk. Delk is a small combo guard, dupree is a 6'7" swingman. If anything, Flip Murray replaced Delk.

yep. thats about the jist of it. Delk just wasn't going to be signed after murray ended up here. I am surprised the lakers didn't immediately jump on the chance to sign him. another spot up shooter for Kobe, and he can shoot it pretty smoothly.

The Piston's bench has a bad rap man, if you get cut as the 9th man for the 'stones the only shot you have is Orlando or Europe.

$1.8 million Euros = $2.3 million U.S. dollars. Euro salaries are after-tax dollars and cover housing, while U.S. salaries are pre-tax and have less perks. So, Delk would've needed ~$3 million from an NBA team to have an offer equivalent to what the Greek team is paying. If no one wanted to pay him the full BAE for two years, it makes $ sense for him to take this deal.

Panathinaikos inks Tony Delk

On the way to replace Jaka Lakovic and Vassilis Spanoulis and re-build its backcourt, Panathinaikos first inked Sani Becirovic and on Wednesday announced the addition of guard Tony Delk (32, 188), a player with a brilliant 10-year career in the NBA.

It will be Delk's first adventure outseide the United States. Last season he started with the Atlanta Hawks and continued to the Detroit Pistons, where he played 23 games averaging 16.4 minutes 7.8 points, 2.2 boards and 1.4 assists. He has also an impressive 42.6% from three-point range.

Delk played college ball at famous Kentucky University after leading the team coached by Ricky Pitino at that time to the 1995-96 NCAA Championship. He tied an NCAA championship game record with seven three-point field goals and earned Final Four MVP honors, while was named second team All-America by AP.

Delk, the so-called Mr Basketball was selected by the Charlotte Hornets in the first round (16th pick overall) on the 1996 NBA draft. He started his professional career with the Hornets and since than has played for Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons.

Among other highlights, Delk, as a player of Phoenix Suns exploded for 53 points on 20-for-27 shooting against the Sacramento Kings on January, 2, 2001. "É am very excited to come to Europe and play for a such big club, like Panathinaikos." Delk said. "It is a big challenge for me to live in another environment and work hard with the coach and teammates to win the Euroleague Final Four in our own court. I am also excited to be in the team where Dominique Wilkins also played."

Tony apparently fancies himself a historian when it comes to the Euroleague game.
