View Full Version : Goodbye Fred McLeod Glenn 08-01-2006, 04:22 PM I'm streaming WDFN and I only heard part of the story, but I think they just said Fred McLeod is leaving Detroit to go work for the Cavs. Did anyone esle hear the whole story? Hermy 08-01-2006, 04:29 PM yeah, its official...Cavs. He worked for them in the 80s. His uber-homer style wouldn't have fit here much longer anyway. Glenn 08-01-2006, 04:31 PM Wow, I feel like I've just hit...the bottom. (sorry, that was bad) I wonder who they'll replace him with? Laimbeer is color, not PBP, so I think I'm safe there. Could Blaha do both (WB 20 & FSN)? Probably not with his MSU commitments. EDIT: My early guess is Matt Sheppard, assuming he's not bound by his UM Basketball contract. Hermy 08-01-2006, 04:36 PM Matt Millen? b-diddy 08-01-2006, 05:12 PM i went to HS with mcleod's son. too bad to see him go, i thought he was great. 'the bottom' was great. sometimes he'd say 'too easy!' in the same voice and real fast, i liked that too. i hope matt shepperd doesnt get the job. his voice is too nasaly, though he does know his stuff. Matt 08-01-2006, 05:13 PM oh man, that does sting. "the BOTTOM!" Matt 08-01-2006, 05:14 PM i went to HS with mcleod's son. too bad to see him go, i thought he was great. In all honesty he'd be better anyways. Plus, he's done his time on FSN already. robcat911 08-01-2006, 08:46 PM My Favorite Fred Moment I would say 4 years ago. We were at home and playing the magic. We were up by 1 with 6 seconds left and inbounding the ball at half court. He also won't return as FSN Pistons play-by-play man next season, media relations director Tim Bryant confirmed. "Fred has graciously agreed to continue in his role as a sports anchor and reporter at Local 4 for the next several months while we conduct a comprehensive search for his successor," WDIV news director Neil Goldstein said in an e-mail. McLeod, who is seeking a broadcast job with the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been with WDIV since 1989. He has anchored the weekend sports report and hosted "Sports Final Edition." His wife, Beth McLeod, is a traffic reporter at the station. McLeod has been the voice of the Pistons on cable for more than two decades. Bryant said FSN will give "strong consideration" to George Blaha. Blaha did play-by-play for Channel 20 telecasts and radio broadcasts on WDFN-AM (1130) last season. FSN color analyst Greg Kelser will return, Bryant said. JickBoy34 08-02-2006, 06:45 AM IT'S A RUBBER RIMMER!! Glenn 08-02-2006, 07:47 AM HEY WERE'S TERRY MILL'S WHEN YOU NEED HIM! Excellent point. Unfortunately, there are only two slots available on the ying/yang and they are both taken. Are you suggesting that 3Mills replace Tony Delk in the "yang position"? Maybe we need ying/yang power rankings. Uncle Mxy 08-02-2006, 08:25 AM I assumed that he was snarfed away by Dan Gilbert and his "I want my Cavs to be like the Pistons" aspirations. But he might not even have the job? Was he -pushed- out of the job? Fuck... Darth Thanatos 08-02-2006, 08:46 AM Thank fucking God. Fred was fucking terrible. Not only was his voice annoying, but he fucked up calls/stats/etc. a shitload of times. I found his homerism to be disgusting. I don't need some schmuck telling me that Carlos Delfino and Maurice Evans are the next Jordan and Pippen. Stop shoving bullshit down my throat and call a game down the middle. But unfortunately, I can't find that anywhere. Freddy won't be missed by me. I hope Cleveland enjoys his blind homerism, awful quotes, annoying voice, poor play-calling, and bad hair job. Good fucking riddance. I hope Blaha does PBP. Black Dynamite 08-02-2006, 09:12 AM blaha is a blind homer too. i remember countless times laimbeer having to correct his old ass on something because he was too busy being homered out. I apologize for even questioning your memory. But these "calling mo evans and delfino jordan" and " constant stat mishandling" was never happening from what I saw. Though i do remember him being a big time homer with Greg K as his offsetting guy like Laimbeer is for blaha sometimes(though Laimbeer can get a little homer with him sometimes). [smilie=paca.gif] to each his own though.[smilie=burgerking.: But i want no part of Blaha on foxsports H1Man 08-02-2006, 05:07 PM I hate Fred. Bring on Champion. He's a superior play-by-play man. Once they were on the top it just seemed arrogant. Plus, if I ever hear "rubber rim" again, it will be too soon. My least favorite FM moment was when he nearly punched Pau Gasol who was simply tourching the Pistons even though Gasol was not excessively celebrating. The dude was letting himself go over the line too often lately IMO. My favorite FM call was after one of the countless Billups game winners, "Chauncey ... You're crazy!" Just the excitement and his searching for a description in the moment made it stand out to me. Matt 08-03-2006, 11:41 AM Just the excitement and his searching for a description in the moment made it stand out to me. i was always waiting for McCleod to just blurt out in his excitement, "Chauncey!! I love you and want to carry your children!!" The Cavaliers fired TV play-by-play announcer Michael Reghi, their broadcaster for the past 12 years, and replaced him with McLeod. The Cavs bought out the remaining two years of Reghi's contract. Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert, whose Quicken Loans mortgage loan company sponsors Detroit's games at the Palace, has been remodeling the Cavaliers in the Pistons' image. McLeod is from Strongsville, Ohio. He worked one season (1979-80) as the play-by-play voice for the Cavs. McLeod's wife, Beth McLeod, is a traffic reporter for Local 4. Her status will remain unchanged, news director Neil Goldstein said in an e-mail. Moodini31 08-07-2006, 09:12 PM My Favorite Fred Moment I would say 4 years ago. I was watching that game too and I remember being pissed and then after he said that I was absolutely cracking up and was like "I'm not even mad." BTW, this sucks big time. You can't have homerism on national broadcasts, but on local ones, it just makes the experience so much better, like you have a fan calling the game for you. I loved it. I never expected Fred to pull a "Ben Wallace". The Pistons' off-season just got worse, if that's possible. UGH. Fool 08-08-2006, 10:10 AM Someone isn't all that happy with the Pistons South hiring Fred McLeod. (After the first couple examples I suggest just skipping to the end since most of the middle is just the end of the first paragraph repeated over and over.) Plain Dealer Columnist[/FONT]"]Today, a Spin Barometer to keep and apply to what you hear about the Cavaliers next season. Or how you'll know if hiring former Pistons broadcaster Fred McLeod as the team's new play-by-play voice was really done to manage the message so that never is heard another discouraging word: If Detroit's Flip Murray scores over Damon Jones and it is called "a rare defensive hiccup by a guy who is to lock-down defense what The Club is to car security." Referring to Jones as a "fly-paper defender," or "Dennis Rodman Redux" should also trigger the credibility alarm. If a pregame show entitled "Cloned" begins with a video comparison of the signature offensive moves of Eric Snow and Pistons great Dave Bing. And Bing's arsenal is measured as "a close second but certainly no reason to hang his head." If Drew Gooden is still here and gets lauded as "a steel-trap student of the game who might have invented basketball if not for the bad luck of being born several decades after Dr. James Naismith." On a nightly basis, the Cavaliers telecast opens with LeBron James shown descending from heaven on the wings of Cavaliers cheerleaders dressed as angels. If a kneeling McLeod begins every interview with owner Dan Gilbert by looking up and saying, "How's the weather up there?" Any description of Larry Hughes as "the Lou Gehrig of the NBA" or a "player who needs a seat belt to keep him on the bench and off the court" might be a dead giveaway. If Mike Brown's coaching staff is ever touted as "wizened," "gray around the temples" or "Yoda-like" in its wisdom and knowledge of the basketball universe. Any reference to the Cavs' offense as "intricate" or "more sophisticated than Sir Ben Kingsley" should raise eyebrows. Zydrunas Ilgauskas' Bowflex commercials air at the end of every quarter. Anderson Varejao is said to play basketball with a discipline unmatched "outside of Camp LeJeune or Opus Dei." Long droughts where four Cavs stand around and watch James dribble could become an interesting opportunity to package and present as something other than what they are. For example, if those dead spots in the game aren't immediately identified and criticized as a stagnant lull but instead considered "supportive teammates subjugating their skill sets in the presence of a player sent from heaven." That just might be more positive spin than you were used to hearing from classy Michael Reghi. If on the occasion that Jones makes a 3 and is shown holding up a corresponding number of fingers as he backpedals down court, it is explained as a Three Musketeers signal - all for one and one for all. That just might be an edict sent from above. Gilbert. Not heaven. The Cavaliers seem intent on replicating everything Pistons, the latest example of which was making an on-air change and bringing McLeod in from Detroit. The arena itself already had undergone the Motor City makeover. The Pistons have pyrotechnics that could melt a glacier. So The Q has pyrotechnics that could melt a glacier and turn everyone within 50 yards momentarily menopausal. Be on the lookout for the surest indication that this has all gone too far: Gilbert wanting to change the name of Lake Erie to "Lake Michigan, Too." http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindealer/bud_shaw/index.ssf?/base/sports/1155026264105190.xml&coll=2 Fool 08-08-2006, 10:18 AM More people unhappy with the ousting of the dude that formerly held Fred McLeod's new job. For many of his 13 years as the Cavaliers' TV voice, Mi chael Reghi was as professional a guy as the ramshackle franchise had. That's what makes his firing so stunning. Reghi spent a lot of years trying to make some horrible teams palatable to the Cleveland audience. He did baseball too, seven years with the Orioles, but I always considered him a hoops guy. It was classless for the Cavs to have fired him this week, late in the off-season when the basketball jobs are drying up. Passion came with Reghi. He was excited when the Cavs won and perturbed when they kicked games away. During the darkest nights before LeBron James, he did his homework, offered up some of his signature lines - "Gonna lift and lace that triple!" [smilie=thumbsdown.: - and never came across as sour on the NBA. He also never said, "Darius Miles at point guard??!! Surely you jest!" He and Matt Guokas were the tops in local sports. Reghi was fire with his enthusiasm, and Guokas was ice with his analytical nature. Many times, Guokas and Reghi had dinner together, then watched wall-to-wall games together on cable. Reghi knew what a resource Guokas' mind was. He wasn't ashamed to scribble notes when Matt made a particularly illuminating point during the long evenings. Guokas was sacked because one year of exposure to a bright former coach's commentary was too much for thin-skinned Cavs coach Paul Silas. It seemed to be a quirk of Silas' personality, but it became a Cavs trend. Reghi will never match radio's Joe Tait in popularity, but Tait acted like James was just another player even after months of getting a load of him. Tait had grown disillusioned by the entire direction of the pro game, here and elsewhere. It was easy to do. As a basketball fan, I often felt the same way. But James' arrival didn't revitalize Michael Reghi. James just took Reghi's innate vitality to florid new levels. At last, Reghi - "Flight 23 cleared for takeoff!" (Wow that's original) - found a talent to match - "Another spectacular performance by the deluxe All-American from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary" - his rhetorical flourishes. Reghi had credibility with the print guys in the league because he was not a shill. He said ex-Cav Carlos Boozer was a better player in actuality than the guy who had been demonized, in this space and others, for his lack of integrity. He wondered on the air how Silas would find the minutes to reward a deep substitute who had suddenly performed well. "If it's not coach Reghi," the sensitive Silas said, sarcastically, the next day at practice. Fred McLeod, who takes over the Cavs job, is from Strongsville, but spent the past 22 years working for the Pistons. McLeod complains endlessly about calls and never saw a home player who wasn't ready for sainthood. (The latter is definately true) This is just another way teams try to control the discourse. The Indians are allowed to put a team PR man on a show WKYC Channel 3 describes as a no-holds-barred look at the Tribe. A mediocre Cavs coach agitates to dump an incisive analyst. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert seems to aim for the so-soft-it-squishes Pistons programming by canning a solid pro like Reghi. (WTF is that shot at the Pistons about?) Truth and accountability might suffer. But as long as it's loud at The Q and LeBron is here, many won't notice. (I love it when sports "writers" look down their noses at fans. Its incredible they don't do it more. I mean really, they are so much better than fans in just about every way.) http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindealer/bill_livingston/index.ssf?/base/sports/1154680600161840.xml&coll=2 Anthony 08-08-2006, 10:38 AM Fred, dont go where your not wanted! Now, Ronnie Duncan. Who's next to get the ax from Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert? Duncan's contract wasn't renewed yesterday by the Cavaliers for his position as public-address announcer. It came days after the team fired Reghi, a popular play-by-play television broadcaster. ''Me, I can understand,'' Duncan said. ''But for the life of me, I can't understand (firing) Reghi. He was unique. He was different. He was hip enough for the hip-hop generation. He had a solid command of the English language.'' Duncan, who is also a morning host on radio station WERE (1300 AM), lasted just one year as the team's PA announcer. He was controversial and fans either loved him or hated him. He took some criticism this past season for calling Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson ''Robinson,'' and once referred to LeBron James' high school as St. Vincent-St. ''Michael.'' During the playoffs, he helped fire up sellout crowds at Quicken Loans Arena. ''Did you ever hear it louder (in The Q)?'' Duncan asked. But that wasn't enough to save his job. ''The Cleveland Cavaliers will not be extending Ronnie Duncan's contract as our in-game public address announcer for the 2006-07 season,'' Cavaliers president Len Komoroski said in a prepared statement. ''Our agreement with Mr. Duncan was a one-year contract, which expired at the conclusion of the past season. The Cavaliers will launch a search immediately to hire a new announcer.'' One person it won't be is Pistons' PA announcer John Mason, a team spokesman said, even though his contract has expired at The Palace of Auburn Hills and he recently left his radio job in Detroit. But it doesn't mean they didn't try to transform Duncan into Mason Jr. ''They made me a robot,'' Duncan said. ''Dan (Gilbert) would interject things during the games, like "Cleveland basketball" (sung to the tune of "Detroit basketball"). They wanted Mason. Maybe Dan should have bought the Detroit Pistons.'' Duncan is disappointed with the outcome. ''I made a contribution to the playoff run,'' he said. ''I didn't think I would spend my entire career doing it. You just deal with it and move on. I'm disappointed. I listened to the former PA announcer and several around the league. I felt what I did could compete with any of them. It was a fun time. I wouldn't trade it for anything. But I'm not going to be a performing clown for anyone.'' Fool 08-08-2006, 01:43 PM "I made a contribution to the playoff run"? Alright then. That "Cleveland basketball" thing really is just sad on the part of Gilbert. geerussell 08-09-2006, 09:57 AM Good riddance. Being a homer is fine, being an uninformed homer making moronic comments throughout the game isn't. I'm glad he's leaving. Judging by the pained, "I'm embarassed to be with this guy" tone in a lot of Kelser's reacts, he's probably doing a happy dance right now too. Glenn 08-09-2006, 10:48 AM http://blogs.ohio.com/cavaliers_blog/2006/08/back_in_the_usa.html The firing of Michael Reghi was a mistake for Dan Gilbert. All the columnists have written this, both Terry Pluto and Bill Livingston of the Plain Dealer were on the mark as far I'm concerned. I've said many times that I respect Gilbert for his business acumen and his overall belief structure. If the guy who paid $400 million wants to hire the play-by-play man, Fred McLeod, he's known as a friend for 20 years and he's listened to as a Pistons fan then he has every right to do so. But he has to respect his customers opinions as well. I've heard McLeod is a good guy and a pro, of course he is because the Pistons run a class organization. However, he's got no chance here at least for the first year or two. No matter what he does, fans will compare him to Reghi and he will never live up in many of their minds. That means Gilbert has no chance of being right. In life, I've learned that is a position you want to avoid. The thing is, Reghi and Gilbert had a mostly good relationship. I have a pretty good feeling that the owner doesn't care for Joe Tait. Gilbert hates negativity in life, which he'll tell you if you ever want to join Quicken Loans. He fires people for being negative. Tait, as we all know, has no problem being negative on the air. He is not a cheerleader and that's what Gilbert wants. Tait has one year left on his contract and hinted in the past he'd retire when he's 70, which he'll be this year. But he also loves calling games with LeBron James in them and may very well want to stick to it. That should be an interesting situation to watch, huh? Of course, with LeBron, people are going to watch and listen no matter what, we all know. Glenn 08-18-2006, 11:19 AM http://www.medina-gazette.com/Articles.asp?num=59287511 ANNOUNCEMENT: Gilbert said the only real outcry he's heard about the Cavaliers' decision to replace television play-by-play man Michael Reghi with Fred McLeod has come from members of the Cleveland-area media. "Have I gotten backlash?" Gilbert asked. "Nothing besides what I read in some of the newspapers." Gilbert then went on to praise Reghi, but added the team was trying to improve its overall product. "We looked at an option that became available to us," he said. "It's going to be a very good choice everyone will understand in a year." Glenn 10-02-2006, 09:23 AM Mixed emotions? This would be cool to see? Fuck you Fred, you're dead to me. McLeod ready for Cavs stint Monday, October 02, 2006 By Roger Brown Plain Dealer Columnist Strongsville native Fred McLeod says mixed emotions were coursing through him last spring as a Detroit Pistons TV announcer, watching the favorite Pistons barely hold off the Cavs in their seven-game Eastern Conference semifinal series. "The Pistons part of me was saying, 'Whoa, this is not good at all. [The Cavs] have us fighting for our lives,' " McLeod says. "But the Cleveland kid in me was saying, 'Man, this is really cool to see.' I'd never been in an arena as loud as The Q was during that Game 6. It put goose bumps on my skin." And McLeod will have plenty of eyes and ears on him, too, in his new role as the Cavs' TV play-by-play voice. The longtime Detroit personality was hired after owner Dan Gilbert dumped longtime team broadcaster Michael Reghi in a controversial move. "I really don't feel any extra pressure," says McLeod, who briefly called Indians and Cavs games years ago while working as a WJKW Channel 8 sportscaster. "Michael is a great talent and a good friend of mine, but we both know things like this happen in our business," McLeod says. "What's important now is that I prove to fans that I'm a high-energy [announcer] who knows the games aren't about me. They're about the Cavs. And, hopefully, they're going to be about more great moments like last season." McLeod will do play-by-play for all 70 Cavs telecasts on cable network FSN Ohio (five of which will be simulcast on WUAB Channel 43). He'll be joined on 40 games by analyst Scott Williams, while Austin Carr will do color on the remaining 30 telecasts. Fool 10-02-2006, 09:25 AM Can't wait to see him almost fight Tayshaun and yell at Rasheed to stop laughing. Moodini31 10-05-2006, 04:44 PM I saw Fred at The Big House 2 Saturdays ago vs. Wisconsin. Then he said, "I still have this though." And he held up a Pistons bag he was carrying. A bittersweet moment. Fool 10-11-2006, 01:10 PM Then he said, "I still have this though." I have never seen Fool this angered. I suggest you hide, Mood. Fool 04-16-2008, 11:41 AM Two years later and the guy still calls them "our" Pistons. http://www.realcavsfans.com/showthread.php?p=235049#post235049 I think I know what "that shit is supposed to fucking mean" Timone 04-16-2008, 11:55 AM If they don't want him, I'll gladly take him back. Seriously, every time I hear the guy I crack up. Especially during the Cavs-Sixers game. "Justice has been served!" ojay 04-16-2008, 01:21 PM Fred is gold. I love Blaha 'til death but listening to Fred a good change up. His wife's hot too. BubblesTheLion 04-16-2008, 05:15 PM Homer Fred/Blaha is the only thing missing from a Pistons championship run. geerussell 04-16-2008, 11:28 PM There is a fine line between good homer announcer and assclown. Fred is on the wrong side of that line, staring across it at Blaha wondering why the grass is so much greener over there. Timone 04-17-2008, 06:21 AM I can see why people don't like Fred, but I personally prefer him over Blaha. Blaha's a good announcer and probably less annoying to most, but he can't keep me interested in following the game like Fred could when we were winning by a bunch or if it was looking like we were about to lose. Big Swami 04-17-2008, 10:31 AM I can see why people don't like Fred, but I personally prefer him over Blaha. you DO NOT DO THAT. Timone 04-17-2008, 10:37 AM I just did. Big Swami 04-17-2008, 10:45 AM Show some respect. Motherfuckers get their heads cut off around here, you know. Fool 04-17-2008, 10:46 AM Big Swam, I know his phone #. I'm sure Mxy could find his home address with it. Timone 04-17-2008, 10:47 AM Blaha's a good announcer :dismissed: Timone 04-17-2008, 10:50 AM Big Swam, I know his phone #. I'm sure Mxy could find his home address with it. That's cool. Just tell Mxy not to touch Kelsey. Uncle Mxy 04-17-2008, 10:44 PM Fool, why would you assume I'd need the phone number to track SDB down? <confused> Having done a little bit of the work, though, I don't feel at all inclined to poke any further. I have no real desire to poke into the shit of anyone on here. And no SDB, no Kelsey for me. Timone 04-18-2008, 06:29 AM It's not fun to track someone down when they're so easy to find. I'm the dude that looks like the street bum/caveman. Hard to miss. Glenn 04-18-2008, 07:22 AM I envision that "Goodbye Fred McLeod" is set to the Elton John tune, "Candle in the Wind". One of you hip lyrical prodigies should take it from there. |
