Damn, I'd love to see DD get in the Andruw Jones bidding

MLB TRADE UPDATE FROM BUSTER OLNEY
The Red Sox and the Braves have talked about a deal that would send Andruw Jones to Boston for Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen and a prospect. But according to an executive familiar with the discussions, the Braves made a counter offer, asking for Jon Lester to be the third player.

MLB TRADE UPDATE FROM JAYSON STARK
The A's have been told they don't have the bullets to land Soriano. Marlins-Tigers-Washington 3-way looks like it's on life support. Another team was told by Bowden he has two deals he can do right now on Soriano _ one with an NL team (Astros?), one with an AL team (Twins?). And on Tejada, I was told there's only a 5 percent chance of that deal going down now.

MLB TRADE UPDATE FROM THE MAG'S AMY NELSON
Three baseball sources say that Pirates RHP Kip Wells is on the verge of being traded to Boston, and that the two sides are ironing out details to get it done. A deal could be done at any minute, a baseball source says.

Andruw Jones might be moving somewhere.

With Andruw Jones only days away from gaining trade veto power, the All-Star center fielder was claimed on waivers by an unnamed team, leaving the Braves until 1 p.m. ET Saturday to decide whether to take their last opportunity to deal Jones unfettered.

That Jones was placed on waivers is unremarkable; he was one of hundreds of players, including many stars, who were placed on waivers earlier this week. What makes Jones' situation interesting is that on Aug. 15, he will gain 10-and-5 rights -- 10 years in the big leagues, five with the same team -- to block any proposed trade.

Multiple teams placed claims on Jones, according to major-league sources. But on Thursday afternoon, one team was awarded a claim on Jones. Now the Braves have two choices -- either work out a trade with the team who placed the claim by Saturday or pull Jones back from waivers. If they pull him back, they cannot trade him again for the rest of this season.

Jones' value in the trade market is relatively high right now, because he is a highly productive player locked up for only one more year -- at $13.5 million -- at a time when players like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee might command $70 million packages on the free-agent market.

The Boston Red Sox tried to deal for Jones leading up to the trade deadline, with some intent to try to flip him to the Houston Astros for Roy Oswalt. Some scouts also think that the Los Angeles Angels, who've been looking for a bat, might have high interest in Jones.

Atlanta GM John Schuerholz, reached on his cell phone, said Friday afternoon that he would not comment on the team's internal business.

I heard a rumor that the Astros are the team that has been awarded the waiver claim.

I think the wondow for reaching an agreement must have expired by now, so it seems Andruw is staying in Atlanta. I wonder if he could have had a Beltran-esque impact on the Astros down the stretch. Guess we'll never know.
Upon further review, the deal with an unnamed team never did come through so he's staying, but reportedly he was quite upset that he was put on waivers in the first place. On the one hand, he said he really wanted to stay with the team. On the other hand, he's now irritated with management. Given the state of the organization and the fact that he has 1 year left on his contract (at $13.5 million), do you think the Braves try to deal him in the off-season? And if so, do you think he waives his no-trade (since he's a 10-5 guy now and has the clause automatically)?
Just curious. I think CF is a strong position for the Tigers with Granderson there and Maybin in the system, so I wouldn't think we're an option. But what if a team in the division makes a play for him? If Hunter leaves, I could see the Twins making a push. The White Sox could CERTAINLY use him. It could get interesting pretty quick.

Granderson was a LF in the minors, and Maybin projects to be CF or RF, and long term will likely end up in RF. If we could get Jones, I think that Grandy would play LF, and we would have a GREAT OF. Or we could go after Lee or Soriano in FA, to take LF, and Grandy could stay.

Olney is reporting that the Nationals put Livan on waivers the same day that the Braves put Andruw Jones on.

Livan was claimed by an unnamed team, and the Nats pulled him back, meaning that he cannot be traded until the season is over.

Looks like Olney's original report was wrong.

I'll put this here since there is no way we can get him.

If he gets dealt, most likely it will be to a NL contender.

Nationals place Soriano on waivers

Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com

The Nationals placed left fielder Alfonso Soriano on waivers Tuesday, a routine step that nonetheless raises the question of whether the team is making one last attempt to trade Soriano before he becomes a free agent, FOXSports.com has learned.

It is doubtful that Soriano will be traded; he is unlikely to clear waivers, and any team that claimed him almost certainly would exert its leverage on the Nationals in an effort to make a one-sided deal.

The Nationals, who said they declined to trade Soriano before the July 31 non-waiver deadline because they did not receive an acceptable offer, likely would receive even less enticing proposals when negotiating with only one club.

"They've taken (the talks) from being on their terms to being on anything but their terms," a rival executive said.

Another major-league source equated an attempt by the Nationals to trade Soriano in a mid-August waiver deal to a "Hail Mary pass."

The Nationals' placing of Soriano on waivers doesn't necessarily mean that the team wants to trade him; some clubs put all of their players on waivers in August as a matter of course, trying to mask their intent with the two or three players they might want to deal.

However, the move also could be an indication that the Nationals are not optimistic about signing Soriano to a long-term extension.

Or, it could mean that the Nats recognize they made a mistake in failing to trade Soriano before July 31 and now are willing to get whatever they can in return.

The Nationals will receive two draft picks if they lose Soriano as a free agent, but only if they offer him salary arbitration in December.

That prospect also could be daunting to club officials; Soriano could accept arbitration if he failed to receive a sufficient long-term offer from another club and earn perhaps as much as $15 million on a one-year deal.

Under the waiver process, National League teams will get the first crack at Soriano in reverse order of the standings. Soriano, who still is owed more than $2.5 million of his $10 million salary this season, likely will be claimed by one of the many teams in the NL wild-card race. The goal of that team would be either to acquire Soriano or prevent NL contenders with better records from acquiring him.

At that point, the Nationals could either pull Soriano back, trade him within two business days or allow him to go to the claiming team.

The latter scenario is extremely unlikely, given that the Nationals would receive nothing but salary relief with such a move.
