Adding another .300 hitter is always a nice move.

I'm not sure why the Pirates were looking to deal him (other than the fact that they are the Pirates). They were his hometown team, and he really wanted to be there.

Good news for us at least.

I'd like to add another power bat still, Casey's all average, no pop.

Who is the minor league pitcher?

I'm sure Vinny or H1Man can add to this, not much here.

really like this move. makes a ton of sense.

we gave up nothing (caputo said rogers wasnt one of the tiger's top 30 prospects. he's a mid-reliever with a fastball that tops out at 91). casey plays good D, and hes a lefty that doesnt strike out a ton.

plus, this gives shelton a chance to settle down in the minors. i really think this is what he needed. a couple weeks where the pressure is off and he can get reaclimated. it seems like, pretty much since may, he's been down 0-2 in the count every at bat. he was chasing too much. he comes back at the end of august, and i think he gives us some really great depth.

plus, espn is saying detroit isnt out of the siriano hunt. now that we have that left handed bat that doesnt strike out, i'd feel alot better about going after a right handed bat that does strike out alot.

"Meanwhile, the Nationals had another surprise shopper on Soriano on Sunday -- the Marlins. Florida seems like the least likely bidder out there. But if you think creatively -- which is the Marlins' specialty -- it's actually the most likely bidder. If the Nationals want bright young pitching prospects back, there's no team that has more of them than Florida. Heck, the Fish traded for about 12 of them last winter. So the Marlins could lop off some of their pitching depth, reel in Soriano and then spin him to address its position-player needs, to a bidder that couldn't make it work with Washington. There was some buzz Sunday afternoon, in fact, that the Marlins and Tigers had had some conversations about Soriano in the event Florida pulls this off. So watch out for that possibility."

plus, the wings just signed hasek, plus, sean rogers just went down with a shoulder injury. big detroit sports day.

I like Shelton and think that he is a better player than what he showed the last 2-3 months but this move was absolutely necessary. His numbers since April have been horrible.

Casey is an upgrade defensively and offensively. The fact that he doesn't strike out much and gets on base often is an added bonus (along with him being LH). His power numbers are kinda weak but his injuries might have something to do with that.

As far as who Brian Rogers is, he is an 11th round pick from GA Southern with some decent potential. His numbers at Erie are pretty good (5:1 K/BB ratio, 9K per 9 and 2.34 ERA). But he is a minor league reliever and thus he is replacable.

Here is BA's take on the trade:

Tigers Add Casey At Low Cost

Sean Casey's return home to Pittsburgh lasted less than a year. The Tigers had been looking for a lefthanded bat and found one Monday by landing Casey. Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield has developed a reputation for putting a high price tag on his players, but he accepted marginal prospect Brian Rogers in return for Casey.

Casey, 32, joined Pittsburgh in a December trade with the Reds for Dave Williams. He'll take Detroit's first-base job from Chris Shelton, who hit 10 homers in April but just six since and was optioned to Triple-A following the trade. Casey doesn't have Shelton's pop—his power ranks near the bottom among big league starting first basemen—but he's a better hitter and fielder. Casey has batted .296/.377/.408 with three homers and 29 RBIs in 59 games after missing six weeks early in the season with a back injury. He's making $8.5 million this year and will become a free agent when his four-year, $28.7 million contract expires afterward. He's a career .304/.371/.460 hitter with 121 homers and 634 RBIs in 1,140 games.

Rogers, a 24-year-old righthander, was an 11th-round pick out of Georgia Southern in 2003. His two best attributes are his slider and his command, and he has a high-80s fastball. In 37 games this year at Double-A Erie, he has gone 3-2, 2.39 with one save. He has a 69-14 K-BB ratio in 64 innings, while opponents are batting .210 with seven homers against him.

I hate to see Shelton get sent down but i've heard that he has developed some bad hitting habits which have contributed to his semi-slump. Maybe he can get that fixed in the minors and come back in Sept. with vengance!!! Casey is going to help us and he was an absolute steal!

Sweet, i'v been calling for Shelton to go down to the minors to get his act together for a while now.

Good Job DD.

Even better about Casey: He makes 8.5 mil and he's a rental, so we're not even stuck with a bad contract. Tigers win that up and down.

The better fielding will be a plus too. Shelton and Guillen have been committing too many errors lately. This gives us a better defensive 1B. If Shelton gets his swing back we can platoon Shelton/Casey/Young at 1B/DH. Since we gave up nothing, I like it.

A buddy of mine that is into autograph collecting just sent me this email.

They could have at least spelled "cancelled" correctly (out of respect).

*breaks stuff*

I hate this addition. We added a left-handed hitter just to add one, and he's not even a good one. We demoted a 2nd class player in favor of a 3rd class class player. Sean Casey is one of the worst corner power hitters in the league, and what's worse, he's doesn't make it up with the average because he doesn't even hit .300. He's hit 12 home runs in his last 700+ at-bats! Get out of here.

The Rangers get Carlos Lee, the Yankees get Abreu and a respectable starter, the Twins or Angels are the frontrunners for Soriano, and Andruw Jones has a caught the eye of Boston. But that's all fine and dandy because we have Sean freaking Casey. We settled for scraps today. We're a main event team, we should be going after main event players, not settling.

who do you want, and who are you giving up? No front line guys were available without Maybin leaving, which is not acceptable.

So the Yankees can trade for a front line guy without giving up anything special?

BA refused to waive his no trade agreement to come to detroit. The list of teams was released and did not include us.

Abreu wasn't going to wave his NTC to get to Detroit. As much as I would've liked him here, he was never really an option.

Plus Abreu was either in a huge slump since last years all-star break, or really starting to show his age. We would have had to give up WAY too much to get him. I'm sure he'll rejuvinate his career in NY... I just hope he chokes when it counts (Against the Tigers in the ALCS).

i dont get the people upset at this trade.

i kind of understand arch's frustration, but it appears that there werent any blockbusters this year. i think its a little much of a stretch to call casey a 3rd class player.

i dont get the people who are going with the 'loyalty' angle. i'm guessing its people who werent following baseball 3 months ago. its not like we lost shelton, he'll be back. we addressed a need without giving up anything. whats wrong with that?

Anthony

I agree with diddy.

We didnt lose anyone and we added something we needed. A lefty bat.
Great deal.

I've been wanting Casey here for a while, but I didn't think his name was really being thrown around.
I've thought for a few years that his swing was custom made for this team. If he were playing a full season in Detroit I'm pretty sure he would hit 40+ doubles (something he actually did 3 times in Cincy).
Look, if you like Polanco, you'll love Casey. He does all the same things Polanco does, but he adds another base and more walks. Plus he does it from the left side. Nice work.

I agree he is a professional hitter he is a guy you can count on. You don't become a 3 time Allstar by being 3rd rate. Yeah it sucks Shelton went down but it's not like he is gone forever. It is on him to get better if he can't fix his swing he will stay in AAA longer.

The trade deadline is about depth and plugging holes, sure it would have been great to land a big bat, but is obvious Bowden wanted too much for his guys. I think the lack of salary clearing by the Nats, shows how steep the price was for a Livian.

I havn't been this happy about a Detroit Trade since Pudge.

Great start for Casey, I'll see if I can get him added to the "Who's your Tiger" poll, replacing Shelton.
