View Full Version : Marvel's Civil war series.
Black Dynamite 07-26-2006, 11:38 PM This series has been starting to catch a little buzz. It seems tight though the superhero registration act story seems like a minor rip off from the watchmen by Alan Moore. Either way has anyone checked it out? It seems like its Iron Man vs Captain America with everyone choosing sides.

Black Dynamite 07-27-2006, 10:39 AM i just read a couple parts of the series last night. it was very entertaining. Possibly Marvels best work in atleast a decade(so far)..the crossovers are spread out a plenty from spiderman to she hulk and everything in between. I liked seeing iron man and captain america go at it heads up. And the Spiderman giving up his identity worldwide was interesting.
without reading anything on it, it seems like a neat premise.
geerussell 07-27-2006, 11:00 AM I've read the first couple issues and some of the crossover stuff. Definitely worth checking out.
Pharaoh 07-27-2006, 11:48 AM Gutz, would you care to do a comic briefing for everyone here?
The best comics (in your opinion) or something like that?
I'd love to learn more about this stuff and a buddy of mine is really into comics but I basically have no clue on the subject.
have you seen my childhood?

well i'd recommend things that would appeal to your vulgar let intellectual thinking.
Oddly enough comics have never really been written in a format where they were strictly for children. Take Spiderman for instance. Seems safe enough. But the premise of the founding story is the death of his uncle. The murder of his girlfriend gwen stacey and the evetual revenge murder of Green Goblin(though it was set up so blood wouldnt be on Spidey's hands). I've read things from Captain america beating the living shit out of daredevil on an alcohol binge to various X-men dying atleast twice a year(with ocasional rebirths.
But yea let be get you caught up on comics you would like.
So far the civil War series is worth checking out.
The Death of Superman series is definately worth checking out(but not the issues after he dies, those were not as good).
Any of Spawn's first 100 issues is worth checking out IMO(great violent stories and humor).
Frank Miller's version of the spawn/batman crossover.
Batman:The Killing Joke
The Watchmen graphic novel(written by the famous dark British Writer Alan Moore)
V For Vendetta Graphic Novel(more alan moore)
Batman Year One by Frank Miller(as you can see theres a trend of Frank and alan writing the best stories)
Spiderman 1-3 written by todd macfarlane
Green Latern is a cult favorite. I mean he has a serious underground following.
the infinity gauntlet series was tight(thanos kicked ass)
theres others i can't think of, but the best way to find the best is trace it to the best writers.

Uncle Mxy 07-27-2006, 06:03 PM For good snapshots of what's out there, start with:
http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/
There's definitely different strokes for different folks. There's some work I like by some authors and artists, and some work I don't. It's easier for me to tell you who to avoid. FWIW, the still-being-written regular series I'm collecting:
Ultimate Spider-Man
Astro City
Ex Machina
Invincible
PS238
and All-Star Superman and Justice
(once they come out in trade paperback)
And I have an awful lot of TPBs and a stack of comics for limited runs, cancelled series, old stuff, etc.
As for Civil War in particular...
It's not a new idea even in the comics. In the 1990s, there was the Mutant Registration Act that led to similar strife. There've been superheroic teams squaring off against each other ever since there've been superheroic teams. Often, these "big event" comic plots are fun while they happen, but many of the characters get left in stupid situations, the writer and|or artist changes, and you're left picking up the pieces.

i agree 100 percent with the disliked ones.
as far as characters being left stupid. so far this hasn't been like that. In fact its been pretty much the best non x-men crossover i've ever read from marvel so far.
Uncle Mxy 07-27-2006, 06:32 PM as far as characters being left stupid. so far this hasn't been like that. In fact its been pretty much the best non x-men crossover i've ever read from marvel so far.
Yeah, but it's not over yet. I'm talking about after the event is over. Here's an example:
With J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 leading the way in writing Civil War and events leading up to it, we have Spider-Man as an Avenger when he's not a high-school teacher, with powers that come from a mystic totem and not a radioactive spider-bite, wearing Iron Man armor, and him revealing his secret identity to the world. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy was brought back up just long enough to have kids with the Green Goblin, fooling around behind Peter Parker's back.
Is all that going to lead to enough good new stories where Spider-Man fans stay interested and grow, or will there be years of "getting Spider-Man back to normal" stories, hoping they don't make things worse in the process (e.g. the Clone Wars, where the goal was to get Peter Parker away from having Mary Jane Supermodel for a wife)? I don't know. I don't hold high hopes.

i read it. and no it wasn't the type of story you'd want, but it was pretty well written oddly enough. Joss whedon is resposible for the x-men stories leading into their part in this i think. Either way its been a good read so far. as far as deatails being not what they should in marvel universe law. they never are in a crossover of any stature. its part of how they go i guess. But so far its been entertaining is all i'm, saying. and thats just so far. it could very well tank. but so far its the best stuff they've had since wolverine got riped a new one by magneto.
Uncle Mxy 07-28-2006, 08:41 AM Yeah, I agree... there's entertainment to Civil War. Especially if you're into "who's more of a badass, superhero X or superhero Y", it's definitely worth it.
Personally, though, I just don't get too caught up into "big events" spanning an entire comic book line. Even at their best, I'd end up having to buy lots of stuff just to understand what's going on in the 1-2 comics I may care about. Then I have to hope that my favorite set of characters isn't fucked up, in the wake of the big event (and usually, half of what happens in big events has to get taken back). Big events are the distinction between "stuff I purchase" and "stuff I borrow", for the most part.
And yes, the Joss Whedon Astonishing X-Men run is pretty good, if you're big into X-Men angst. My favorite Whedon comic, though, was Fray.
Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 10:21 AM Well Mxy with technology now, you only buy the main chapaters and download the connecting comics you're not into buying. buying the amazing spiderman crossover=cool. buying the she hulk crossover=i'll just download it.[smilie=burgerking.:
Uncle Mxy 07-28-2006, 10:57 AM Actually, if She-Hulk could retain a decent artist, it'd be outstanding. Dan Slott, the dude who writes She-Hulk, is funny as hell, and She-Hulk is the comic book version of Boston Legal. Still, if you're more into Spidey than She-Hulk, check out "I'm With Stupid", about his friendship with the Human Torch over the years. Great stuff, and it's sold in digest format.

Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 11:03 AM i will. though i never consistently bought spiderman ever since Mcfarlane left. he was by far my favorite spiderman artist.

the black suit pre-venom era. was a good time.
my cousin has this locked up somewhere. one of my favorites before the web of spiderman series went downhill.
http://www.samruby.com/WebA/Large/Web001.JPG
i myself have spawn 1-50 bagged up.
Hermy 07-28-2006, 11:15 AM That was the first appearance of Venom Gutz (in addition to the first McFarlane Spidy). He's in one panel at the very end, just Eddie's arm turning black. Thats the black suit he has Silver Sable make for him (If memory serves 10-15 years back).
edit: I have that WOSM #1 also. I have every appearance of Venom or the costume including crossovers besides #300 until he got his own spin-off.
Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 11:20 AM I know it was the first appearence of venom. Thats why i liked seeing the spiderman preview have the bell tower part from it. It was really well written too. A really dark start to the Web of spiderman series. The series was tight for the first 50-70 parts, then slowly fell off.

I take it you'll be first in line to get a glimpse of Spider Man 3 then next summer.
Hermy 07-28-2006, 11:26 AM I say I will, but I never end up seeing movies. My wife makes me go to one a year, last I saw on my own was Anchorman.
Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 11:37 AM Hmmm well you got plenty of time to ponder the right course of action. i hink it doesnt hit until May
Uncle Mxy 07-28-2006, 12:02 PM McFarlane's Spider-Man art rocked, no doubt!!!
The stories he actuall wrote were mostly iffy, because he was telling Spawn stories rather than Spider-Man stories. :) When he had other writers teamed up with him on Spidey, it worked out much better.
Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 12:15 PM well maybe i enjoyed them because i am a spawn fan. i thought he did a great job writing on the Torment series that started off that new self titled spider man comic series.
also looking at she hulk. she could do a pretty tight R-Rated/similak heavy/diva fest movie with Titania as her arch nemesis.

covert all of that to movie format and get some genuine story/action in between. Then you'd have a hit.
Hermy 07-28-2006, 12:19 PM Titania, crossovers, black costume......sounding like secret wars in here.
Black Dynamite 07-28-2006, 12:28 PM though it got mixed reviews and was titled "secret wars 3" by some. Infinity gauntlet was a great series IMO.

Story Synopsis for those who aren't familiar.
THANOS, THE MAD TITAN, embarks on his most audacious scheme yet. In order to win the love of his mistress, Death, he intends to gain the ultimate power in order to slaughter half the population of the known universe. To do this, he procures the Infinity Gems, six gems of such unimaginable power that they give their holder the powers of God.
Naturally, this does not sit well with the heroes of the Marvel Universe. While Thanos casually erases half the universe from existence, the Silver Surfer races to Earth to find help from our heroes, especially Dr. Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of this dimension. Meanwhile, the cosmic deities of the Marvel Universe -- Eternity, Order, Chaos and the like -- try to defeat this new addition to their pantheon with their own not-quite-omnipotent stores of power. Of course, they lose.
All seems lost until the heroes bring the attack to Thanos, and by the final issue the gauntlet is wrested from his hand. Unfortunately, it ends up on the hand of Nebula, Thanos's granddaughter and a woman who isn't above declaring herself omnipotent, either. Although she doesn't have quite the murderous intent of her grandfather -- she restores life to all those he casually slaughtered -- she is clearly not the heroes' first choice as the wielder of the ultimate power. She is defeated by the heroes with the help of a newly resurrected Adam Warlock, the cosmic adventurer who becomes the gauntlet's possessor in the end.
Warlock finds his perceptions and his consciousness raised to a higher level by the power he possesses, and while the heroes don't savor his new godhood, they also know there's not much they can do about it, either. Warlock sends the heroes home, and his final act in this story is to visit Thanos, who escaped after losing the gauntlet's power. Warlock finds him on an unnamed planet, enjoying the life of a simple farmer. Ironically, Thanos finds himself not missing the ultimate power at all, and does not envy Warlock the infinite responsibility that is now his to carry.

Still, appreciate the links and will things check out. I'm familiar with Miller and Moore and enjoy their work, so I guess I'll start with them.
