I am wearing glasses right now but I'm thinking of changing to contacts. Glasses just got annoying especially when I'm out doing something active such as basketball or any other sport. If I do buy contacts, I probably wont wear them all the time, only when I'm playing basketball etc.

Would that be the smarter choice or do contacts get just as annoying?

dont know your age, but I would just go with laser eye surgery. I had the procedure done 2 years ago and have not looked back since.

Sounds like a real problem, did you get a refund?

The first friend of mine who had laser eye surgery (LASIK) in Windsor in 1999 ended up with light sensitivity that he's never fully recovered from. The state of the art's improved since then, and I have other friends who have had laser eye surgery with great success, but I'm still leery.

I wear contacts and I like them over glasses. I wear them for weeks at a time then just throw them away. The in-and-out is the only annoying part until you get used to it.

I don't know your situation, but guys who wear glasses are 10x less likely to get asked out by a girl than those who don't according to british studies. Contacts = Punani.

So your wife probably likes it when you wear the glasses, huh, Herm?

I wore contacts like Herm for years. I wore them for weeks, even months without taking them out at night, and then just threw them out.

That was several years ago, in my teens and 20's. As a result of doing that, I started getting "chronic allergic conjunctivitis", i.e. pink eye symptoms caused by allergies and exascerbated (sp?) by the contacts. Now, my eyes are so sensitive, I can't even wear contacts for more than a few hours at a time, without my eyes drying out and getting real uncomfortable (and drops don't help). My eye doctor said it is common, so it will probably happen to Herm in a few years, too.

I then started wearing glasses all the time, but hated how restrictive they were. You can't see under, above, or around them, only straight through. They weigh on your nose. You fall asleep with them on and break them, or can't see the tv before you go to bed if you take them off. You can't see the clock in the middle of the night, and can't even see your glasses to put them on in the morning, unless you know where they are. They get in your way when swimming, working out, etc. On and on and on, they SUCK!!!

I had LASEK (similar to LASIK) a couple months ago. The first week was hell, but its like I'm free from jail. No glasses, no contacts, perfect vision. And I was light sensitive before the surgery, so who cares?

I highly, highly recommend it for anyone who feels that their prescription has leveled off and won't get any worse. Laser surgery = freedom (and the chicks dig it, as Herm said).

My wife likes it when i wear my lunch lady uniform.

My optomitrist said the way I wear them is fine now, today's disposables breathe much better than contacts did even 5 years ago. As long as I switch them out every 2-3 weeks its no problem.

Why was the first week hell?

Is it pretty expensive?

just remember to give yourself a good 30 min - 1 hour for the first time you try and put them in yourself. it's beyond frustrating to get them in the first time.

LASEK has a more complicated recovery than LASIK. Swolen and painful eyes, blurry vision, etc.

I wasn't a candidate for LASIK. I could only have LASEK.

With LASIK, you'll walk out in 10 minutes seeing better than before you walked in, and seeing 20/20 the next day.

It is really cheap right now in Michigan. Last year it was approximately $3,000 total for both eyes. Now its 1/2 that.

you have to get recommended or something from your doctor?

Are there any long term after effects?

If laser sugery gives you perfect vision, then I guess it would be much better than contacts

I know a few people who have gotten the surgery and for the most part they're pretty satisfied with it, yet I'm in no rush to go out and get it. They've already improved it by a couple generations of technology since it was introduced, I'll wait for a couple more.

In the meantime, I wear contacts. The latest and greatest in lenses are orders of magnitude more breathable, so comfortable you barely know they're there and come in 30-day disposable form that you can wear for two weeks, take out overnight, wear for another two weeks and then throw away. For my money it's a great way to split the difference between the nuisance of glasses and the uncertainty of surgery.
