View Full Version : Problem hooking up xBox live with my 360
theMUHMEshow 07-17-2006, 07:32 AM Just got my 360 up and rolling...and I am having one HELL OF A TIME getting my xbox live shit set up. I spent all day friday on the phone with xbox and belkin (my router company) and i have basically tried everything to get this damn thing going. I have a wireless connection without the option to try a "wired" connection. I have tried changing my DMZ, I have tried setting up virtual servers...nothing has worked.
The router is a good ass router ($100 router) and is NOT on the list of not compatible routers...it is one of the best routers out, yet it wont work..
I hear there is a way that you can use your computer as an access point some how? Basically use my CPU to get the signal and some how SHARE the connection to my xbox?
If any of you guys have any suggestions please help me out...

Well, there is one option you can try, but it's going to cost you a bit more cash.
You can get yourself a Linksys Wireless Game adaptor, but it costs $80...

Linksys Game Adaptor (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&No=20&N=200713+401503&Ne=400000&product_code=339564&Pn=Wireless_A_G_Game_Adapter)
That could help because when you hook your 360 up to that adaptor, it sees the connection as a wired connection rather than a wireless connection. So, as long as that wireless card sees the Belkin router, you should be in good shape. I actually own one of these adaptors, I bought it for my XBOX, and it works pretty damn good. I still use it on my 360 when I'm not playing anyone online because my wireless in my house has been totally blowing goats for the last 6 months, but it worked great when my wireless didn't suck in my house.
That might be your only hope.
Did you buy the XBOX wireless adaptor or something?
edit:
I forgot to say congrats on the 360 purchase, Muhme. I really enjoy the system and find myself having a hard time playing my regular XBOX anymore. Even if the current gen football games are going to be better than the ones on the 360. The basketball games are outstanding for it, though.
bangpow 07-18-2006, 08:51 AM Any luck, Muhme?

My internet is out at my house...I am having all kinds of hell this week.
Basically here is my issue...Bang, Tell me what my options are.
I dont have actual intenet at my house. I have my neighbors connection which comes in my house at 54 mps and its FULL strength. I have never had ONE problem using it and he KNOWS I use it and its no biggie. However, now I am having the aforementioned problems and it is driving me fucking nuts...
So what I did was dive into his router online and started messing with shit...changed the router to an "access point" thinking that would work if I matched that IP with my Xbox's IP. I was not aware that it would take everyother CPU down off the network...well that didnt work and that trashed everybodys internet offf that router...
Next problem...my neighbor is in COLORADO for the past 4 days and wont come back until next tuesday...So I am w/o internet and cannot really try anything....
What I was GOING TO ATTEMPT is this...I hear that I could take my laptop and send the connection from it to my 360? Not sure if and how that would work but that was going to be my next attempt.
I am just frustrated as all hell as you can imagine...I have GWAR and NCAA and tons of days off until school starts back off...
bangpow 07-20-2006, 02:59 PM Damn, man. I gotta be honest, I am not the most well versed in networking. In fact, I totally hate it and I stress myself out over it.
As far as using your computer as an access point, it won't do you any good if you knocked all the computers off the network. But if it did work, I don't know how to do that. I have never tried to do it before.
However, does your neighbor have his network secured or is it just wide open and you access it that way?
If it's wide open, you could probably reset the router back to the default settings and try connecting again.

He does have it wide open...but I have no idea to get back into it? The settings are not set up for remote access

How did you tool around with the settings before? Are you able to do it again?
Or did you knock yourself out of being able to get into the settings?

I dont know how to get back into mess with them...I do not have access on his network any more..it just says something to the effect of "limited or no connectivity" so I cannot get into the router settings to reset it ya know?
bangpow 07-20-2006, 03:12 PM That sucks, man. I hate to say it, but I got nothin'.
bangpow 07-20-2006, 03:12 PM what kind of wireless card to you have for your X360?
theMUHMEshow 07-20-2006, 03:16 PM what kind of wireless card to you have for your X360?
The Microsoft one...
How does that thing you showed me hook up?
Does that just grab your current connection and send it wired to your XBOX or does it have to go wired from your connection to your XBOX wirelessly?

Yep, when you hook that up to your 360 via an ethernet cable, it shows up as a wired connection and the box that's hooked to it finds the wireless connection.
At least when I test my XBOX Live connection, it says "wired" in connection type.

Ahh that might work...So basically that Linksys grabs your wireless connection from your router, then it wirelessly connects it to your xbox...this might solve my problem? I assume that router that my neighbor has is not compatible or something...So this would work around that correct?
(I checked and the router is not on the list of not working and the guys at xbox said it should work..but for some reason it doesnt)
This will be cheaper than the 100 i spent on the damn wireless xbox thingy....

Yes, in theory it should work as long as the linksys adaptor sees the wireless internet connection.
JickBoy34 07-20-2006, 04:15 PM I would suggest buying your internet...lol.

Or...I could save $40 because I am a broke ass college kid? How does that sound?

That just usually means your not getting a good connection. Nothing to do with the settings.
Is it a laptop? Try moving closer to his house and resetting the connection on your computer.

I have FULL STRENGTH on my laptop, just says "limited or no connectivity"
Anthony 07-21-2006, 02:41 PM Wow, thats wierd. I'll see what I can dig up. I know i've gotten that message before, but it only happened when I would have trouble getting a signal.
Wireless connections are a pain in the ass. Do you know if you can still get into the router settings?
Usually its the address to the defult gateway. If you go to your network connections and double click your wireless connection it should tell you what that is. See if that works.
i dont have a 360, but have spent enough hell hours on networks so i might be able to help. the default gateway anthony mentioned would either be http//192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 depending on the brand of router. do you know what the brand is? getting back into the router would be the first step ;)
second... the shared connection through your laptop is pretty easy to set up. ill assume your using some type of windows xp. first off your laptop would need two internet connectors... since you are connecting wirelessly in the first place i would think you need a LAN jack for the xbox. i may be wrong about that, but im pretty sure you cant use the same wireless adapter for two connections (never tried). if you go into your network properties for your laptop, then the advanced tab, there will be a box you can check that says 'allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection'. check this box. you will also have to make sure that the windows service 'windows firewall/ internet connection sharing (ICS)' is set to automatic and started. you may also need to make sure the 'application layer gateway service' service is running, but im not sure for your specific pc.
i hope that gets you started, ill check back and good luck.
theMUHMEshow 07-21-2006, 07:43 PM I am pretty sure that I cannot get back into my router settings...I cannot access the internet at home because I set the router to an ACCESS POINT. So how would I be able to get into the router settings? I cannot log on from a remote location also...I am fucked basically...especially since its my neighbors connection...I assume he will have to totally reset everything or soemthing?
theMUHMEshow 07-21-2006, 07:45 PM Oh and it is a BELKIN router...I used 192.168.2.1 to get into the status page before...but that was when I could browse the internet on the connection. Now I have the connection...I just cannot go do anything with it due to the "limited or no connectivity"
...i hate...my life.
well it sounds like the router isnt assigning your laptop an IP address. is your laptop set to request a specific IP address or just assigned one? just since you havent posted it yet, bring up your cmd prompt and type 'ipconfig /all' and let us know what it says. if your IP address starts with 169 (i think) then thats definitely the problem. you might just have to wait til your friend gets home and either have him reset it via the lil button or change the settings back from his pc.
Anthony 07-22-2006, 05:25 PM Yeah, thats pretty much all I can think of as well.
Good luck to you.

Did you get that game adaptor that i told you about or something?
theMUHMEshow 07-27-2006, 11:45 PM Yeah I got that linksys...it is working GREAT
bangpow 07-27-2006, 11:50 PM Yeah I got that linksys...it is working GREAT
Sweet!
I wasn't sure how it was going to work, but I did know that when I test my settings, it shows my internet connetion as a wired connection since it is hooked up to that adaptor.
I'm glad you are able to get online. I have yet another opponent that I can bust out Boise State on!
;)
