Attention WTF members:

I am writing to advise all of you that Denny McLain has been suspended by me for one week, and stripped of his mod powers, for constantly and intentionally baiting other members into arguments. I want to stress that this was done without a vote, based on our zero tolerance policy. I also want to stress that there were personal motivations for me in doing this, and I admit it, so spare me the arguments about unfairness. This is every bit as much a dictatorship as it is a democracy, when the need arises. Its like President Bush - the rules don't apply in a time of war.

This board is supposed to be fun.

Political/religious debate is welcome, and even heated discussions that are intellectually honest are welcome. But baiting other posters to argue with each other, baiting mods to argue with each other, and baiting administrators to argue with each other, all for some sick pleasure that has no intellectual value, will NOT be tolerated.

You should all understand the difference, but if you don't, I'll give an example:

Tahoe and I have been involved in some heated political discussions. However, it is between us, and we are both simply stating our feelings. We argue politics, and even use strongly worded examples to make our points. At one point, when he bitched about the Jersey girls and I felt he was being insensitive, I tried to explain "how would you feel if you were a relative of a victim" by saying "I hope someone rapes and kills your family so you know how it feels" or something like that. It was in context, it was between Tahoe and me, and most people understood where I was going with those words.

Denny, on the other hand, has been spending the bulk of his time, when he's not sketching caricatures, trying to get other people to argue, trying to get people suspended - and then arguing about the unfairness of their suspensions, meddling in other people's business in order to get a rise out of them and cause more problems, making phony arguments in order to make points that he really doesn't care about anyway, being intellectually dishonest just because its an easy way to get a rise out of people, and constantly pushing buttons with general members and members of the Syndicate, to see what he can get away with, and to see what kind of arguments he can stir up.

What is between Tahoe and me is between Tahoe and me. What is between Anthony, Steve, Gutz, and the Syndicate, however, for some reason, is between Denny, Anthony, Steve, Gutz, and the Syndicate. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE, especially for a mod.

Denny has one week to think about his transgressions, and decide if he wants to come back and be a solid contributor, instead of an instigator.

However, if he or anyone else EVER comes back from a suspension to act like a martyr, argue their case, drag things on, start up with a Syndicate member, etc., like Anthony has been doing lately, they will be permanently banned, without a vote. Actions by the Syndicate are taken, and then we MOVE ON!!!

PS: This is also a strong hint to Anthony to consider a new sig, stop talking about fried chicken, stop calling Glenn "PC guy" or ANYTHING else, and MOVE ON before he is perma-banned, too.

The War Room is hot right now. Surprisingly, no one has chimed in with a voice of restraint. EVERY Syndicate member that has weighed in on the issue has suggested perma-banning at least three members, and some four members, who should know who they are. So you should all check the thin ice and don't step too hard on your PMs or you might slip through the cracks.

PS: What happens in the Boardroom usually stays in the Boardroom, but for purposes of explaining what Denny did (as the last straw) to warrant a suspension that has been brewing for a while, here it is.

He made a prejudicial statement about the middle east (basically make it all a parking lot, they all kill each other anyway), and I pointed out the outrageousness of his comment by making a similarly outrageous comment "I agree, Denny, we should kill all the black people, too."

He used that as an excuse to be intellectually dishonest, pretend I was saying something racist when he knows I was simply calling HIM racist, etc.

But that's not what got him suspended. No, he couldn't leave well enough alone. It wasn't enough to start fights between posters, he wanted to start a disingenuous argument in the Boardroom, for no other reason than he apparently can't get laid and has no friends.

It's too bad that it's gotten to this point.

What we've got here is a great place to talk sports, religion, politics, movies, music and almost any kind of weird shit you can think of.

Things are allowed to get as heated as you guys want them to be, but we pretty much have one rule, stay away from the racist shit.

Yet we have people that keep pushing and pushing (not talking about Denny specifically) this issue. Why? There are a million other things to talk about. Why this?

We've always provided a lot of latitude with post content, and we still will. But now we've got to start clamping down on this shit before it gets out of hand.

We've got too many good people putting in too much time (and money) here to let it all go by the wayside because somebody wants to throw around stale racial jabs and ignorant/inflammatory rhetoric.

It's going to stop.

In the past, the Syndicate has tried to be democratic and have had lengthy discussions about possible violations/suspensions/bannings, but no more.

We've all been empowered to take immediate action from now on, no debates, no votes. That means we may not all agree with decisions (despite what some have stated we do NOT all think alike) but that's a trade off that we're willing to make now.

Hopefully this racist shit dies down soon so we can get back to having fun. I don't want to have to worry about putting out fires every time I log on here, and neither do the rest of the guys.

I feel bad for a guy like Vinny. He puts in his own time to write these great articles and instead of discussing the great shit he's slinging we end up back on the race thing again. We're doing some really positive things to help the site grow and we will continue to put our plans into place to increase membership here. And to facilitate that, we're going to have to turn the screws a bit here and there when it comes to the race issue. Sad but true.

Our mods are here to help the site run properly and grow, and most of them do just that (even the mods that have been demoted have done good things in the past). But we're at a point now where we have to zero base this thing. Either you are helping or you aren't.

We have a wonderful playground to play on here, don't fuck it up. Actually, we won't let you.

This "one rule" becomes the apple in the Garden of Eden. Maybe there should be more rules, so when members want to push their luck, they can do so without "crossing the line" in ban-able offences. It's like most parents know their underage kids drink, but realize that if their kids think they are getting away with something, they're a lot less likely to try and push their luck in other areas. It's always about pushing boundaries, and if the parents condones the drinking, the kids would move on to something "they're not allowed to do". It's the same thing with speeding - Police you let people get away with it for the most part, if it is within reason because it gives the citizen the feeling like they are getting away with something and are thumbing their nose at the man. If you rigorously enforced the speed limit rule(or any rule for that matter) people would begin to feel oppressed, and it would build up without an outlet.

As far as the public flogging, we decided when we started the site that we weren't going to go the route of the "backroom dealings" that went on at RGM, you know the "you are on thin ice, check your PMs". Truth be told, if this was being handled like it was at RGM, your post wouldn't even be here anymore. Any board-related issue that was deemed too controversial always had a way of "disappearing".

5. Use common sense;

This thread, in one sense, is hilarious. I still can't believe how many people get their jollies from blantantly pushing the envelope. Bottom line: I have no idea what happened and I'm feeling that ignorance is bliss. I tend to stay in the sports forums where life is good (with the exception of bill davidson being a cheap bastard, the red wings losing their identity, the tigers losing to the pirates, and the lions being the lions). It's the fact that I generally stay uninvolved in this stuff that will keep me out of the Syndicate for quite some time, and that's the way I chose it.

However, I applaud the Syndicate for standing firm on what little rules we have, and will continue to wonder why certain people always gravitate toward questionable posting standards.

Hello Denny.

Personally, I like seeing some of the workings that go on behind closed doors. It's certainly a double-edged sword, but I like it a lot more than some big brother-esque administrating. I like that they gave everybody the whole story so there is no mistaking what went on. No secret PMs, no half truths, no fabricated junk. It's all out there for us to make our own decision. That's part of what makes this board unique.

Funny. I was suspended for "intentional provoking an argument", but this thread somehow mutated into "racism and prejudice". I'd like to make it clear that I NEVER made any racial or prejudicial comments. The post about "bombing the region" (meaning the middle east) was to illustrate my absolute frustration for the lack of progress. It's a feeling shared with many in the world, I'm sure. But, of course, it was taken out of context.

Funny. I was suspended for "intentional provoking an argument", but this thread somehow mutated into "racism and prejudice". I'd like to make it clear that I NEVER made any racial or prejudicial comments. The post about "bombing the region" (meaning the middle east) was to illustrate my absolute frustration for the lack of progress. It's a feeling shared with many in the world, I'm sure. But, of course, it was taken out of context.

FWIW, this is basically how I'd read DennyMcLain's original post when I had concurred with him. That thread got quickly locked and all sorts of other shit happened that I didn't really pay attention to at the time, owing to a hard road trip. (At around that time, some random bitch accidentally got my face in a cloud of mace and I was watching the NBA Draft squinting like fucking Popeye. Or maybe it was when I found the random non-hotel-staff person in my fucking shithole of a hotel room. Helluva fun trip... NOT!)

I recommended long ago that no one should be banned, ever. That the good posters should always weed out the shitty ones. A good board should be self-regulated, with minimal interference from mods and admins. This holier-than-thou shit is really fucking pathetic.

I remember when this place was fun, too. But now I think it needs a total restructuring because it's getting out of hand. First, the Syndicate needs thicker skin. Second, drop the whole idea of plastering rules all over the fucking place. Third, keep internal battles internal whenever possible.

But what the fuck do I know. I'll probably be banned for having a dissenting viewpoint anyway.
