i use adaware, but there are two versions of adaware. one is 1.06 and one is up to 6 or 7.0, the 1.06 is the better one. i also use xoftspy to double check adaware sometimes, once in a while its picked stuff up that adaware didnt see. for av, i use norton.

I use AVG as well. I've found quite a few of the programs recomended here (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm) as pretty worthwhile. I don't use all 46 (don't have a need to) but the one's I have tried I've been happy with. The page is also updated regularly (also, AVG updates all the time and does so very quickly).

i started putting AVG on friends/family computers, when they ask me to set them up. new computers always come w/ a trial antivirus software like norton. it's annoying, because after the trial period is over, they don't get new definitions/updates. then they get virus.....then i have to go and fix their computers. *sigh*

I have found that staying away from RealGm is the best form of virus/spyware protection.

I use a combo of adaware and spybot for adware/malware/spyware.

Another great free tool is siteadvisor. It installs on your web browser and taps its database of websites to provide a rating of the site you're on and it also tags any google search engine results. They test/rate sites for spam (if there's any signup available), they test any downloads for ads/trojans, check to see if the web page does anything untoward with your browser, etc etc. If a site/link is flagged, you can see a summary of the issues in a mouseover or follow a link for a detailed report.

I've been using it for a while now and highly recommend it. They have versions for firefox and IE. It just recently got snapped up by McAfee so there's no telling whether it will remain free for the long term but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Matt is a genius. AVG, Ad-Aware, and a non IE-browser (though this may change after the release of IE7 but it's still just a beta) are all you really need to go along with smart surfing habits. For browsers I'd currently recommend Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) or Opera (http://www.opera.com/).

Delete them. I bet it's some javascript port scanner or trojan, and not a legitimate executable infected by a virus so there's nothing to save.

Keep in mind that SiteAdvisor and other tools of that nature -do- spy on you, sending the URLs you visit to its database in order to determine their relative level of "goodness". McAfee's EULA and privacy policy claim to not store IP addresses or other personal information, but that may change depending on a court order. Depending on what level of "session state" they store (they use cookies) and the particular URLs you visit, it may be easy enough for them to discern the user even without knowing their logging any particular IP address.
