Lamar Odom's son diesJune 29, 2006
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Lakers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/lal/) player Lamar Odom (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3327/)'s 6 1/2 -month-old son has died, a spokesman for the team said Thursday.
Jayden Odom died Wednesday night, apparently suffocating while sleeping in his crib in New York, according to John Black.
"Lamar is very distraught," Black said. "Both he and the baby's mother are asking that people respect their privacy at this time." Jayden was born Dec. 15. Odom has two older children -- a son and a daughter. The 26-year-old Odom came to the Lakers two years ago in the trade that sent Shaquille O'Neal (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/847/) to the Miami Heat (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/mia/). Odom averaged 14.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 80 games for the Lakers last season and 19.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists in their first-round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/pho/).

Artis Gilmore 06-29-2006, 10:32 PM Dude, thats fuckin sad. My condlences to the Odom family.
Cross 06-29-2006, 10:34 PM I mean he died in his fucking sleep.
Peaceful but then again just straight out fucked for a 6 month old kid.
Artis Gilmore 06-29-2006, 10:35 PM 6 months, thats even more painful to know it's an infant.
detroitsportscity 06-30-2006, 12:10 AM Sad beyond belief.
Its a pretty comon way for infants to go. We wouldn't let anything but the blanket my daughter was wrapped in stay in her crib and we checked on her continously throughout the night for the longest time (my first child). But really, how long does it take for an infant to pass from something covering its mouth? Even with all that I'm sure it could have easily happened to ours had some unfortunate coincidence or chance movement occured.
A very sad and hard to prevent thing.
Pharaoh 06-30-2006, 11:02 AM How freaky is this?
Today, in Australia it's "Red Nose Day"
It's a day to raise money for research into....
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome!
I gave money today to prevent shit like this happening.
Thoughts and prayers to Lamar and his family.
I hope next season he fucking dominates.
Wizzle 06-30-2006, 11:13 AM As a guy with a 2 month old boy at home, this stuff scares the shit out of me. I can't even begin to imagine, nor do I want to. We actually have a monitor that senses the baby breathing. If it senses no movement for twenty seconds an alarm goes off. It has let me sleep a little easier but it is still very scary.

We bought one of those, too.
I stay up until 4am most nights (as many here know) so chances are I'll be watching the baby most of that time.
The fiance gets up around 7, so I'm feeling pretty good about things.
I know it can happen at any time, but with the monitor and my "insomnia" (not really, I've always stayed up late and slept during the day) we should be good.
Taymelo 06-30-2006, 03:43 PM Some tips for the young dads:
1. Secondhand smoke contributes to SIDS - big time. If you smoke in the same house/car as your kids, the odds go way up. Smoke outside!!!
2. Overheating is suspected as one of the culprits. Don't overdress your kids in heavy jammies, don't use blankets, and don't keep the nursury too warm.
3. No stuff in the bed with the baby. No blanket. No pillows. No teadybear until they are old enough to move well in bed and extricate themselves from any problems.
4. One theory is that children who sleep really, really deeply are more susceptible - apparently b/c they'll sleep right through while suffocating, instead of waking up hot, or unable to breathe well.
Taymelo 06-30-2006, 03:48 PM PS: My wife wanted the angel pad (beeps when kid stops moving). I said FUCK NO!!! The video monitor, which my wife turns up so loud you can hear it buzzing all fucking night, is enough.
Everyone has to make their own rules, but to me, that angel pad is overkill, unless your child has a condition that would make him/her more susceptible to SIDS. I refused to accept that it was "necessary" to have a pad beep every time an otherwise healthy child doesn't move. What's next? one of those machines they hook you up to at the hospital, that beeps when your blood pressure goes down?
Glenn 06-30-2006, 04:08 PM Good tips Tay.
From what I've read, instances of SIDS have actually gone down since they switched from advocating that kids sleep on their stomachs. Now they say they should sleep on their backs. (Although now I hear that there are increased incidences of kids developing flat heads from laying on their backs, but at least that is correctable.)
Those "sleepsacks" do a great job of keeping them warm without the dangers of blankets. Some of them even say "Back to sleep" on them to remind you to keep the kid on his/her back.
I often wonder if they make those things in adult sizes, they look so damn comfortable.
RegicideGreg 06-30-2006, 08:57 PM RIP JAYDEN ODOM
SIDS is a terrible thing and their really isn't much we can do about it.
My prayers go out to the Odom family.

I have yet to have 1 smoke in this house (remember I moved not long ago?)
And I really, really appreciate the tips.
We should have an advice thread for young fathers. It seems a ton of people have kids or are having them, but I guess that's a female thing?
