Ok, training camp is 5 weeks away.

Yes, that's a long time, but the Tigers have a day off today and I need something sports related to put my energy into. When all is said and done, football is probably my favorite sport. That kinda sucks for my pro sports cheering situation. Every team in Detroit either finished the season first in the regular season standings or, in the Tigers case, they currently sit alone in first. So success (regualr season) has the city feeling pretty good. But can you begin to imagine what the city would be like if the Lions had the best record in the league? Ok, I'll get realistic now.

Anyhow, as we get closer to camp and when it starts, this is the place to talk about it.

Lions | Millen insists the team could cut M. Williams
Wed, 26 Jul 2006 19:32:13 -0700

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions president Matt Millen insists the team could cut WR Mike Williams, regardless of his draft status, financial commitment or salary cap implications. Millen said, "I think we would be willing to cut anybody. I think we just have to be. There's realities of where we're at, but ... everybody has a chance to define what they are. Here we go." However, Millen softened his stance on Williams a little. Millen said, 'Mike's got a ton of talent, and we're a thousand percent behind him. Mike's a young player who's trying to figure it out. It's not uncommon. It really isn't. We have high expectations for him because his talent's so high. There's a couple of bumps, but we have a tendency to try to make it sound sometimes worse than it is at times because there's an urgency. I want it to happen right now. But you take a step back. OK, you give him a little bit of understanding, but not too much."

He was going full speed all the time."

Lions Sign Five Draft Picks
Calhoun Inks Four-Year Deal; Scott, McCann, Matua and Cannon Sign Three-Year Contracts

The Detroit Lions announced today that they have signed five draft picks from the team's 2006 NFL Draft class: RB Brian Calhoun, T Jonathan Scott, CB Dee McCann, C/G Fred Matua and LB Anthony Cannon. Calhoun signed a four-year contract while Scott, McCann, Matua and Cannon each signed three-year deals. No other contract terms were disclosed.

Calhoun, 5-9, 194, was taken by the Lions with the 74th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. During his collegiate career at Wisconsin and Colorado, Calhoun amassed 2,760 rushing yards on 619 attempts (4.5 avg) with 27 rushing touchdowns, and also had 90 receptions for 909 receiving yards (10.1 avg) and four receiving touchdowns while playing in 39 total games with 24 starts.

Calhoun had a record-setting season in his only year at Wisconsin in 2005, tallying 24 total touchdowns with 22 rushing, both Badger single-season records while starting all 13 games. After compiling 1,636 rushing yards and 571 receiving yards as a senior, Calhoun became only the second player in Big Ten Conference history to rush for over 1,000 yards and record over 500 receiving yards in the same season. For his senior season performance, he was a second-team All-American selection by The NFL Draft Report, Associated Press and Sports Illustrated, a consensus All-Big Ten Conference first-team choice and a semi-finalist for the Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award. He was also the recipient of Wisconsin's Jimmy Demetral Team MVP Award, was selected to ESPN's All-Bowl Team and was MVP of the Capital One Bowl.

Forced to sit out during the 2004 football season after transferring from Colorado to Wisconsin, Calhoun joined the Badger track team. While competing on the 4x100-meter relay squad, he helped Wisconsin claim the 2004-05 Big Ten Conference Championship,.

As a sophomore at Colorado in 2003, Calhoun recorded 810 rushing yards on 195 attempts (4.2 avg) with five rushing touchdowns. He also added 32 receptions for 266 yards (8.3 avg) and one receiving touchdown to earn All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention by league coaches.

Calhoun's high school accolades included Prep Football Report, Prep Star and Super Prep All-American honors, a two-time All-state selection, and was also selected as All-Region and All-Southeast Conference. He was also named Gatorade's Wisconsin Player of the Year as a junior, and Region and conference Player of the Year and second-team All-League as a sophomore.

Scott, 6-6, 315, was taken by the Lions 141st overall in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Texas where he started 45 of 51 games in his collegiate career. Scott comes to Detroit after a senior season in which he helped the Longhorns win the national championship by ranking first in scoring offense (50.2 ppg), second in rushing offense (274.9 ypg) and third in total offense (512.1 ypg). He was named All-Big 12 Conference as well as being a first-team selection by the American Football Coaches Association, the Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America, the Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

In 2004 he started every game at left offensive tackle, registering 31 touchdown-resulting blocks and 141 key blocks to help Texas earn national rankings of second in rushing (299.2 ypg), seventh in total offense (464.4 ypg) and 12th in scoring (35.3 ppg). Accolades for his junior season included first-team All-American choice by The NFL Draft Report, second-team All-American by the Associated Press and honorable mention by Pro Football Weekly and was a consensus first-team All-Big 12 conference selection.

Scott finished the 2003 season with 25 touchdown-resulting blocks and 117 key blocks to help the Longhorn offense rank sixth in scoring offense (41.0 ppg) and eighth in rushing offense (232.5 ypg), nationally. For his performances, he earned third-team All-Big 12 conference honors from the league coaches, second-team from the San Antonio Express-News and honorable mention from the Associated Press.

Scott was named to the All-Big 12 Conference Freshman Team by Sporting News and was an All-Big 12 honorable mention by the Associated Press after playing 12 games to help the team rank 16th nationally in scoring offense (33.8 ppg).

During his senior season at Carter (Dallas, Tex.) High School, Scott registered 81 knockdown blocks and did not allow a sack for an offense that averaged 301.3 rushing yards-per-game. He received second-team All-USA honors from USA Today in addition to being named first-team Class 5A All-State as a senior.

McCann, 5-11, 200, was chosen by the Lions 179th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. He finished his career with 151 tackles, 10 interceptions, five sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five pass deflections while at West Virginia and Jones County (Miss.) Junior College.

During the 2004 and 2005 seasons at West Virginia, McCann played in 21 games and started 11 to post 79 tackles (49 solo), seven interceptions, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five pass deflections.

Before transferring to West Virginia, McCann played one season at Jones County (Miss.) Junior College where he posted 72 tackles, five sacks and three interceptions. He prepped at Greene County (Miss.) High School where he earned All-District honors as a running back.

Matua, 6-2, 306, was drafted as the 217th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, projected as one of the top guards. During his three-year collegiate career at the Southern California, Matua helped the Trojans ground game increase from 2,306 yards in 2004 to 3,380 yards in 2005.

As a senior in 2005, Matua was named All-American second-team, an All-Bowl Team selection by Rivals.com and was All-Pac 10 Conference second-team choice. Matua started every contest at right offensive guard and helped lead the nation with 7,537 yards in total offense - the second-most by an NCAA Division 1-A team in a season. Matua posted 102 key blocks with 12 resulting in touchdowns, allowing only two quarterback sacks and three pressures for the season.

Playing at right offensive guard position his sophomore campaign in 2004 Matua was named an All-American first-team selection by College Football News. He made an impressive 71 knockdowns with eight touchdown-resulting blocks which allowed the offense to generate 5,838 yards, including 3,532 yards passing.

During his redshirt freshman season in 2003, Matua was named All-American second-team pick by College Football News. He started the first six games at right offensive guard, then fell into backup position for John Drake in the next five contests, but still saw game action. He eventually moved back into the starting lineup vs. Oregon State and Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

Matua earned a starting job in the 2002 fall camp as a true freshman, but a knee injury moved him out of the starting lineup.

During his high school career at Banning High school in Wilmington, Cali. Matua excelled as a lineman. He earned several honors including, the 2001 Super Prep, Prep Star and Tom Lemming All-American selection. As a junior he was named to the All-L.A. City second-team and All-Marine League first-team while getting 75 tackles, including 15 sacks, five forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception.

Cannon, 6-0, 234, was the Lions' second seventh-round pick, to make him the 247th overall selection of the 2006 NFL draft. As a four-year starter at Tulane, Cannon completed his collegiate career with 437 tackles to rank fourth all-time at Tulane and third in Conference USA history. Cannon's 29 career tackles-for-loss tie him for fifth-place in school history.

During his senior campaign in 2005, Cannon led Tulane in tackles with 114 for the third time in his career. As the team's top tackler in nine of ten games he played during the season, he finished with 47 more tackles than the second-highest total on the team. He also had team-highs of 12.5 tackles-for-loss, five pass break-ups, and 2.5 sacks. Cannon was selected to Watch List for both the Rotary Lombardi Award (top lineman or linebacker) and the Butkus Award (top linebacker), as well as first team CoSIDA Academic All-District choice.

As a junior in 2004, Cannon was a third team All-Conference USA selection and led Tulane in tackles with 107, and quarterback sacks with 4.0. He ranked fourth C-USA and 29th in the nation in tackles-per-game. Cannon's four forced fumbles ranked second in the league and tied tenth in the nation. He was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team selection.

In 2003 as a sophomore Cannon played in 11 games, starting in 10 at weak-side linebacker. He earned All-Louisiana honors by tallying five or more tackles in every game he played. Cannon finished the season with 102 tackles (60 solo) ranking third on the team.

Cannon saw plenty of action as a freshman, earning the label of Tulane's top tackler with 114 stops (67 solo) at his weakside linebacker position. He was also named the Conference USA Defensive Freshman of the Years by The Sporting News, and was ranked second in the nation among all Division I-A true freshman in tackles.

Cannon, a Pensacola, Fla. native, compiled 120 tackles, including 12 for losses his senior year at Stephenson High school in Georgia. The same year he was also chosen to represent Georgia in the Florida-Georgia All-Star Game. In his junior year Cannon tallied 92 tackles with two sacks and caught eight passes for 154 yards.

Not a good situation to have the LB's all hurt when they are learning new positions. Bailey is moving to MLB, Lehman to SLB and Sims will be the WLB. None of them have played those positions in the NFL (i think Lehman only played MLB and WLB, but he might have filled in for Bailey sparingly).

Assuming they can play 14+ games this year, I really like our LB's. That's a big assumption with these guys though.

Martinez will make the team
Glenn Martinez, an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley last year, will make the final 53-man roster. Yes, it's early, but after watching him in practice and listening to the coaches talk about him, I'm convinced he's in their plans.

First, Mike Martz makes no bones about how much he likes the guy. Also, while the Lions are mixing up the rotation of their receivers -- Mike Williams and Charles Rogers and others are bouncing between the second, third and fourth teams -- the one guy who has always lined up with the second team is Martinez.

The guys is big, fast, catches the ball, doesn't make mistakes and he's tough as hell. Which brings me to the other reason he'll make the squad -- he's a special teams dynamo. If you're a backup receiver, you have to be able to contribute in some fashion and Martinez can do a lot of things on special teams. In addition to coverage teams -- where he's fearless -- he could also be one of the team's hawks on punt coverage.

OK, so here we are -- there are six receiver spots available and five are already spoken for: Roy Williams and Corey Bradford are the starters and Mike Furrey is the No. 1 slot receiver. Eddie Drummond, who is doing an excellent job in the slot and could push Furrey for playing time, will make it on his kick return abilities alone. Throw in Martinez and that means there is just one job left. Mike Williams, Rogers and Scottie Vines will be fighting for it.

Is there any way Williams is on this team come the regular season? It looks like Rogers is a long shot and he seems to have at least some people fighting for him. I don't hear anything good about Williams nor anyone standing up for him.

The only thing that Williams has going for him is his contract. I just can't see the Lions cutting him and taking on that humongous cap hit (even if they spread it over 2 years).

Mike Williams endures exhaustive stretch in heat

Wednesday, August 02, 2006 By Tom Kowalski

ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions coaches were not trying to kill wide receiver Mike Williams, it just looked that way.
With the temperature in the mid 90s and the humidity high, the Lions practiced for 90 minutes on their outdoor fields Tuesday afternoon. It was their 10th practice in five days -- all in pads and helmets -- of hot weather conditions. By the middle of the workout, it was clear that the players had hit the wall. Their body language revealed a team that was hot, exhausted, sore, tired and miserable.
At one point during practice, Williams took off his helmet, shoulder pads and jersey in an effort to cool down -- something no other player attempted to do. Team trainers, though, determined he was no worse off than anybody else and, after Williams suited back up, he went back to work.
During practice in hot conditions, receivers will usually run a play or two -- rarely more than two in a row -- before coming out. It's done to keep the players fresh and to get all 11 wide receivers in camp into the offensive rotation.
When Williams returned, though, the coaches had him run five consecutive plays. After the third play, he walked toward the sideline -- it's located about 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage -- when he saw the coaches and tapped his chest in a manner that suggested "Me again?"
When that was confirmed, Williams turned and jogged toward the huddle. After he ran his fifth play in a row, he came out for a short period before going back in. After running two more plays, he raised his arm to show that he wanted to come out. Another receiver ran into the huddle while Williams headed to the sideline, but the coaches sent Williams right back in again.
Williams ran every play seemingly without complaint and was clearly exhausted by the end of it. He ran through every pattern and even attempted to block a defender downfield if the pass went to a different receiver. Afterward, Williams sat on a cooler and trainers applied cold towels to his head and neck.
As they do with all players, the trainers monitored Williams throughout the practice. If he had showed any signs of health problems, they would have pulled him out.
It's team policy that coaches aren't available for interviews after the afternoon practice and, as Williams walked toward the air-conditioned locker room, he didn't look like a player who was willing to stop and chat. http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1154488215281500.xml&coll=1

Cutting Mike Williams or Charles Rogers for a whack-ass receiver that I went to school with at Saginaw Valley State is a joke. Are you going to tell me that Glenn Martinez gives the Lions a better chance to win than 2 guys who were probably the best receiver in college football their final year. Reeeedickulous.

I watched the Lions' Training Camp DSR and started to eat a little cornbread. Then I heard about this and it reminded me why I hate the Lions. I'm really looking forward to running Martz's offense with Scotty Vines as the #2 receiver and SVSU Martinez in the slot.

Where can I get a puking emoticon?

If Glenn Martinez is outplaying and outworking them, then he is definitely better than both Mike Williams and Charles Rogers regardless of their draft status and college track record.

I don't buy it H1. I mean they were the 2 best receivers in all of college football and Jicknuts Martinez was trying to pick up some D2 chicks at Cardinal Townhouses. Sure, so they've had some off the field problems, and have been less than excited to practice. Look at Iverson, that cat didn't even practice at all! I'm not saying Chuck and Mike W are going to be the AIs of the gridiron, but put the most talented players on the field and let's see what happens.

I'm partial, but I'd love to see Glenn make the team. If not the Lions, then maybe another team at least.

The major difference though is the fact that guys like AI give full effort when they are on the court. They might not care much for practice but once they step on the field, they play their hearts out. CRog and BMW, on the other hand, don't give any effort on the field or in practice.

But BMW did show some signs of life yesterday. So maybe there is some hope left for both of them in Detroit.

Let's hope so. Those cats can do it. I BELIEVE!

Mo Clarett won a national championship, now the dude's getting busted on his way to offing material witnesses. You follow the college game, there are plenty of guys who just don't translate into the pros.

But like you, I'd much rather see Rogers and Williams on the team if they can get their heads out of their asses because of the shear talent they possess. But at this point, I understand going with Jonny NoName with his head on straight then premadonna blue chippers who don't show up on the feild.

BTW, Killer this morning (on Drew & Mike) seemed to take it for granted that Williams had made the team. He said it still doesn't look good for Rogers (though that's always followed by "though he's doing much better in practice") but he said he'd be surprised if Williams wasn't on the team.

I just want to see the Lions come out with Roy Williams, Mike Williams and Charles Rogers split out with Kevin Jones in the backfield, running Mike Martz's offense. Sick!

Browns close to making trade for Lions’ center

The Browns and Detroit Lions were doing more than playing a football game Friday night at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

A source close to the Lions said that the teams are talking trade. The Browns would like to acquire 11-year veteran center Brock Gutierrez. It’s not known which player the Browns are willing to trade.

Gutierrez, who played at Central Michigan, has been relegated to backup status. The Lions are set at center with Dominic Raiola.

The Browns have been in what general manger Phil Savage termed “dire straits” at center since starter LeCharles Bentley suffered a season-ending knee injury the second day of training camp. The situation worsened when Bob Hallen, who replaced Bentley, retired after suffering back spasms.

It was announced this week that Alonzo Ephraim, who started the preseason opener against Philadelphia, will be suspended the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Ross Tucker was acquired in a trade with New England last week. Tucker started last night in the Browns’ 20-16 victory over the Lions.

Savage indicated after the Eagles’ game that he wasn’t done looking for help on the offensive line.

It usually takes me a few weeks, but it's happening extra early this year. I HATE THIS FREAKING TEAM! They just lost 21-3 to the clown ass Raiders, the offense looks comical and the defense is the typical sieve. And to make matters worse, our #1 draft pick from last year, Mike Williams, is healthy and doesn't even get a snap! It's a damn pre-season game. I don't care how whack he's doing in practice. I'll say it again! It's a damn pre-season game, it doesn't count! Put him on the field and see what he can do! Don't even get me started on Charles Rogers. In all likelihood, the Lions will cut Rogers and Williams and our #2 and 3 receivers will be Corey Bradford and Furrey! Are you kidding me? We get new players, new coaches, a new scheme, new GM, and it's been the same shit for 50 years.

The Lions are the worst franchise in professional sports. I can't wait until we finish 5-11 (at best) this year, pick Brady Quinn and ruin his career. AAAAAAAAH!

Millen being the new GM. I know it's not recent, but no matter who we have in what position, WE SUCK.

Anyone watch the game last night? McCown ended up with pretty good numbers, was it just that it was Buffalo or did he look sharp or what? I think he has the most potential of the three.

Can someone update me on what happened to Vines? When did he get whatever injury he has that got him put on the P-U-P list?
Whatever it was, clearly at least one of the two WR's that was on the way out has to be excited that they get another shot now because of it. Otherwsie At least one if not both would be gone. Now, one still likely has his job.
