Cross 06-11-2006, 02:37 AM Terry Porter is to replace Lowe on the bench.

It also says Wells is most likely to sign with us...possibly
My molesare telling me Terry Porter will replace Sidney Lowe on the Pistons' bench next season.
Lowe, Flip Saunders' top assistant, has taken his dream job as coach of North Carolina State, where he played in college.
Porter was coach of the Bucks for two seasons before being fired in June 2005. Players, moles say, loved Porter because he knows what it takes to be an NBA player.
In two seasons with the Bucks, Porter was 71-93 and led the team to the playoffs in 2003-04.
The only reason Porter got the broom was because new general manager Larry Harris wanted to hire his buddy -- current coach Terry Stotts. For the record, Stotts was a runner-up when Porter was hired in August 2003 to coach his hometown team.
Fans, of course, will remember Porter as the pesky Trail Blazers guard during the Bad Boys days. In 1,274 games, Porter averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 assists and 1.24 steals. His teams went 815-547 and made the playoffs 16 times.
This might work out for everyone. Saunders and Lowe often were seen arguing about plays and situations during timeouts.
Lowe, a point guard for N.C. State during its 1983 national title run, replaced Herb Sendek.
As far as Porter, expect an official announcement soon.
I moved this post because I feel it is newsworthy aside from the general pistons rumors/speculation. Plus I can't wait for Gutz's take.
Thank you to Crossyouup for being the first to post the story.
Cross 06-11-2006, 09:23 AM No problem.
I know Porter does have experience as a coach so if Saunders makes dumbass plays, we can rely on porter as well.
Good move for the coaching staff
Anthony 06-11-2006, 09:25 AM I like porter
Theres something about Rob Parker I cant stand though.
theMUHMEshow 06-11-2006, 11:06 AM Rob has been swearing up and down that Grant will be a Piston next year...Hopefully he is right.
Black Dynamite 06-11-2006, 02:36 PM Plus I can't wait for Gutz's take.
no take. i already said my piece. i thinks its a mistake hire of a guy who will be another talking head with no true defensive emphasis. nothing new to add. i was worried that hiring Flip would hurt our defensive emphasis and hurt us in the playoffs because of his average level playoff coaching last offseason. heres to another year hoping i'm wrong. ~sigh~[smilie=sayitaintso: [smilie=running.gif]

Pistons president Joe Dumars confirmed he had interviewed Terry Porter (former Bucks coach) and Jim O'Brien (former Celtics and 76ers coach) for assistant-coaching spots on Flip Saunders ' staff.
The Pistons are looking to hire both, which would give the bench a lot of clout.
They would join DonZierden on the staff.
It is unclear whether assistant Ron Harper will be back. He was on a one-year contract last season.
Assistant Igor Kokoskov is expected to return.
SidneyLowe left the staff and is now coach at North Carolina State.
Cross 06-24-2006, 04:20 AM 2 previous head coaches.
This could be really sweet or really big shit
Pharaoh 06-24-2006, 04:51 AM I don't think this is going to blow up in Joe's face. Porter isn't that kind of guy and I don't think O'Brien would bother. He's had more jobs than you've had hot dinners.
When you really think about it this means they admit Flip got out-coached.
Why else would you sign 2 former head coaches?
And who is the "lead" assistant? And how much do these guys get paid?
Even if Harper doesn't return we'll be fine.
What did Harper do exactly anyway?
Uncle Mxy 06-24-2006, 06:58 AM Harper told the players how much more motivated his Bulls championship teams were.
We ought to keep Delk if we hire Jim O'Brien.
Varsity 06-24-2006, 01:00 PM Harper told the players how much more motivated his Bulls championship teams were.

Have they been together before? How do you think O'Brien would help Delk?
Black Dynamite 06-24-2006, 02:41 PM Jim obrien coaches a soft zone defense. of course i'm not sure it was because of philosophy or lack of good defenders. porter was never anything special IMO. But Its an upgrade from last years staff. And i think when Joe D said get somebody the players respect, Harper was the leading candidate of people they probally didnt respect. A guy with no coaching skill who spends the whole season telling you how much better his 96 bulls were. That gets old by midseason.
I got no problem with Jim Obrien(decent coach was unfairly fired IMO), But porter is another potential bust of an assistant coach.
Heres some info i guess.
Jim O'Brien
College - St. Joseph's (PA) '74
Jim O’Brien has 30 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional level. Most recently, he served as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2004-2005 season. The Philadelphia native guided the 76ers to the playoffs with a 43-39 record, a 10 win improvement from the previous season.
O'Brien has served as an assistant coach at six different colleges, a head coach at the University of Dayton (1989-94) and Wheeling Jesuit (1982-87), and an NBA assistant coach with the New York Knicks (1987-89) in addition to his seven years with the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach (1997-2001) and a head coach (2001-04).
After serving as an assistant coach in Boston from 1997-2001, O'Brien was named interim head coach of the Celtics on Jan. 8, 2001, following the departure of Rick Pitino. He signed a multi-year contract as head coach on April 24, 2001. On Jan. 27, 2004, Boston announced O'Brien's resignation as head coach.
During his four seasons as a head coach, O'Brien led Boston to a 139-119 (.539) record and back-to-back playoff appearances in 2002 and 2003. In 2002 that playoff appearance included a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since the team's 1987-88 campaign.
As interim head coach for the final 48 games of the 2000-01 season, O'Brien led the Celtics to a .500 record (24-24). The following season, his first full season as head coach, O'Brien directed Boston to its best record (49-33, .598) since the 1991-92 campaign as the Celtics made their first playoff appearance since the 1994-95 season. The Celtics defeated Philadelphia in five games in the opening round and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals where they were defeated by New Jersey in six games.
Prior to joining the Celtics as an assistant coach, O'Brien served as an associate head coach to Pitino from 1994-97 at the University of Kentucky. During those three years the Wildcats posted a 95-12 record, winning the NCAA National Championship in 1996 and losing in overtime in the 1997 title game.
As head coach at the University of Dayton from 1989-94, O'Brien led the Flyers to a 61-87 (.412) record. In his first season (1989-90), the Flyers posted a 22-10 record, capturing the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Tournament championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to coaching at Dayton, O'Brien was an assistant coach for Pitino with the New York Knicks. In 1987-88, the Knicks notched a 14-win improvement over the previous season and qualified for the NBA Playoffs for the first time in four years.
Before taking the Knicks post, O'Brien served as the head coach at Wheeling Jesuit College (1982-87) and posted a 74-69 (.517) record in five seasons. Overall, O'Brien posted a 135-156 (.464) collegiate record in 10 seasons as a head coach.
O'Brien also held coaching positions at the University of Oregon (Assistant Coach 1978-82), Saint Joseph's University (Assistant Coach 1977-78), the University of Maryland (Assistant Coach 1976-77), Pembroke State College (Assistant Coach 1975-76), and Wheeling Jesuit College (Assistant Coach 1974-75).
As a player, O'Brien was a three-year starter at Saint Joseph's University, where he led his teams to three post-season appearances (NIT in 1972, NCAA in 1973 and 1974). He was named team co-MVP his senior season, and was selected to both the Saint Joseph's Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Big Five Hall of Fame in 1989. Prior to attending Saint Joseph's, O'Brien was a high school standout at Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, winning the Markward Award for city's top senior cager in 1970.
O'Brien earned a Bachelor's Degree in Management and Marketing from Saint Joseph's in 1974 and received his MBA from the University of Maryland in 1981. O'Brien (born Feb. 11, 1952) and his wife, Sharon, have three children: Jack, Shannon, and Caitlyn. Sharon O'Brien is the daughter of Hall of Fame coaching legend Dr. Jack Ramsay, a former Sixers general manager and head coach.
Like I said before he has been a part of str8 up defensive teams(knicks, but has been coaching zones lately, but might have been the personel(philly and boston were not athletic defensive teams). I do like Jim and think he has solid coaching skills. It'll be interesting to see if he has a voice on this staff or not. Actually to be fair it was a soft man zone they played in Philly, very similar to the soft zones Larry Brown played with us from time to time. And philly only allowed 90.5 points a game i think. can't be sure if my source is correct.
One last thing, after looking at the bucks records under porter, i dont get this Terry Porter love i've heard him get a couple times on other forums. He has not much coaching experience and feels like Ron Harper part 2. But O'Brien seems like someone they would respect.
Uncle Mxy 06-25-2006, 10:40 AM Delk played under O'Brien for the Celtics and Kentucky Wildcats.
Higherwarrior 06-26-2006, 01:31 PM actually i think the guy the players didn't respect was FLIP. harper doesn't have coaching experience really, but he has playing experience. players respect that right off the bat.
same way with porter- he has plenty of playing experience and by all accounts was a good coach too. he was just in a bad situation.
i think these moves are designed to give us a fallback plan if/when we end up canning flip.
there would be a smoother transition if we can plug in one of these guys off our current coaching staff.
i never thought the guys respected flip, except maybe billups. but even billups himself took a bit of a veiled shot at flip when he said: "there are about a dozen coaches who could coach this team and get the same results." (paraphrasing)
and i agree with that statement. it doesn't take a great coach to coach this team; just someone who they respect, and someone who can motivate them when needed. also, someone who can give each player a role and develop bench players.
IMO flip failed at ALL of those things.
Pharaoh 06-26-2006, 02:44 PM I agree with Higherwarrior
Joe Asberry 06-26-2006, 02:53 PM we have 3 headcoaches now, well lets hope the guys find at least one guy they can respect now otherwise fuck em and get some players who can respect the coach...
Higherwarrior 06-26-2006, 04:20 PM put me on the staff! they'll respect me! i have over 30 years of monday-morning-quarterbacking on my resume.
;)
Black Dynamite 06-27-2006, 11:43 AM harper doesn't have coaching experience really, but he has playing experience. players respect that right off the bat.
naw, that might go over for the first few weeks. but think about this, every assistant coach on brown's staff had some real coaching experience and was in on helping with the gameplan. Harper didn't seem to do much at all on the coaching side outside of telling newspapers that we arent as good as the 96 bulls. I could be wrong, he might've wrote half of Flip's playbook, but if he did bring anything to the table the players respected, then Joe D. probally wouldn't let him go like he has now w/o a lick of afterthought. Either way i like jim obrien as a coach, i think Porter sucks donkey balls at coaching skills.
JMHO though. Who knows who was going on in that locker room.
Black Dynamite 06-27-2006, 11:44 AM we have 3 headcoaches now,
2 legit headcoaches.
Glenn 06-27-2006, 11:45 AM Did I miss the official announcement about all of this?
It's not a done deal is it?
Black Dynamite 06-27-2006, 11:53 AM Did I miss the official announcement about all of this?

Nope, i fully expect a surprise hiring of Larry Brown as a special assistant coach/Sith/Chancellor/Emperor on the low key. And we later find out MR D sold the Pistons to Joe D for 5 dollars and a bottle of the new "rush limbaugh endorsed" brand viagra.
OUGrizz11PG 06-27-2006, 10:49 PM I don't think this will all happen -- I can't see, like Pharaoh said, the Pistons paying three head coaches head coach-money.
I also think Rob Parker is an idiot.

Chatted briefly with Terry Porter, the former Blazer who is part of a group trying to buy the team. He declined to go into detail about the group's effort to buy the team, but he did confirm reports that Detroit had offered him an assistant coaching job but he was deferring a decision on that to let the ownership effort play out.

Did Terry's team not play D? I wouldn't mind Jim O'Brien he seemed to give a damn about it.
the wrath of diddy 07-19-2006, 12:46 PM He coached the Bucks and they didn't play D for shit. Of course they didn't have any good defensive palyers so maybe he can coach it.
I would fear having Jim O'Brien on this team. If you think we chucked a lot of long dumb jumpers before wait til he gets his hooks in the offense.

to be fair to him not many people is gonna stop iverson, webber, and korver from chucking. not even mo cheeks is capable of that. not even LB could stop IVO chucks. I want him for defense, and Flip ass is so tight on offense, i dont think he'd let him add to it anyways.
the wrath of diddy 07-19-2006, 01:12 PM His Keltics and Suxers were all about chucking long jumpers.
I agree he'd be a nice defensive co-ordinator.
axemanozh 07-19-2006, 03:44 PM Didn't Dick Harter have most of the defensive responsibilities under O'Brien, both in Boston and Philly?

dont worry, as is my understanding, the defense will take care of itself.
i thought obrien was off the table due to 'family probablems'.
obrien's chucking system in boston worked pretty well, imo. he had to lean on his superstars so much that he couldnt really run a conventional offense and hope to make it through 82 games. i honestly didnt watch too many 6er games during the obrien era, so no comment there.
UberAlles 07-19-2006, 06:46 PM Can someone explain to me why we signed Flip Murray with two great guards on the bench?
Porter and Harper would be deadly backing up Billups and Ripster!

Porter could become Pistons assistant soon
Tuesday, August 08, 2006
Terry Porter, whose involvement in the pursuit of buying the Portland Trail Blazers ended last week, is expected to be named a Detroit Pistons assistant coach as early as today.
Porter, who played three seasons (1995-1998) in Minnesota for current Pistons head coach Flip Saunders, was part of a group of investors interested in purchasing the Trail Blazers. That was before Portland owner Paul Allen announced last week that he was no longer trying to sell the team.
Porter would fill the void left by the departure of Sidney Lowe, the former assistant who became the head coach at his alma mater, North Carolina State University after last season.
Porter played 17 years in the NBA and also was the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2003-2005.
In his first season, he led Milwaukee to the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round by the Pistons. However, during Porter's second season, the Bucks got off to a disastrous start and missed the playoffs.
Porter was fired shortly after the Bucks acquired the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft, which they used to select Andrew Bogut.
-- A. Sherrod Blakely
wtf, am i the only one who thought he was already signed as a assistant, months ago?
Black Dynamite 08-09-2006, 09:14 AM is Porter so coveted that we are waiting as long as HE pleases? [smilie=sayitaintso:
Sprewell won't like that we waited on someone and not him.

Another fallout of Allen taking the team off the market could result in Terry Porter, the former Blazers star who was part of a group that put in a bid to buy the team, accepting Detroit's offer to become an assistant coach. Booth Newspapers reported Tuesday that a deal could be finalized this week. Porter, reached by telephone, said "That's a rumor for four or five months. It's still a rumor. I have not signed anything with Detroit." Pistons spokesman Kevin Grigg said no announcement was scheduled.
Uncle Mxy 08-23-2006, 08:12 PM The deal is done.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced today that the team has signed Terry Porter as an assistant coach, the Pistons announced on its Web site.
Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to add Terry Porter to our coaching staff,” said Dumars. “Terry was a fierce competitor during his playing days and he has excelled as both a head coach and assistant coach in this league. We feel his experience is a good fit for our team.”
Porter enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Pistons after serving as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks for two seasons (2003-05). He led the Bucks to a 41-41 record in his first season (2003-04) and a first-round playoff berth. During his two seasons as head coach, the Bucks compiled a record of 71-93 and a 50-32 mark when playing at the Bradley Center.
“I’m excited about the opportunity that Joe Dumars and Flip Saunders have given me,” said Porter. “The Pistons are a championship organization and I look forward to working with the players and coaching staff.”
MOLA1 08-23-2006, 09:04 PM That solidified our championship run!
J/K, but having Terry who was a very good coach in Milwaukee
(never should have been fired and wouldn't have been if it weren't for politics)
as an assistant is pretty big for us. It'll be great to see him help out our guards.
Joe Asberry 08-24-2006, 04:47 AM lets hope he can do some adjustments during a playoff series, cause Flip can't..
Dude at TOS said this is part of a move to send Flip on his way. Said he heard it from a Piston exec and a real estate agent who tipically handles Piston players. He couldn't give names though so its even less than an internet rumor in my opinion.

I also heard from my Taco Bell Insider that Tom Izzo was at the Auburn Hills Taco Bell last week. That pretty much guarantees that Izzo will be the next coach of the Detroit Pistons. You heard it here first.
ask your taco bell insider if that new burrito w/ the crunchy tortilla strips is any good......i'm intrigued...
