View Full Version : U.S. airstrike kills Al Qaeda leader, al-Zarqawi
Al-Zarqawi's death gives Iraq a chance to "turn the tide" in the fight against the nation's insurgency, President Bush said at the White House.
"The ideology of terror has lost one of its most visible and aggressive leaders," Bush said. "Zarqawi's death is a severe blow to al Qaeda."
"Zarqawi personally beheaded American hostages and other civilians in Iraq," Bush said. "Now Zarqawi has met his end and this violent man will never murder again."
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said al-Zarqawi's death will have "worldwide" effects. "Let there be no doubt the fact that he is dead is a significant victory in the battle against terrorism in that country, and I would say worldwide because he had interests well outside of Iraq."

Glenn 06-08-2006, 11:58 AM I'm happy that we have one more dead terrorist, but on the same token, the terrorists now have one more martyr.
Sadly, I think this news is pretty much meaningless, except for how it will attempted to be used for political gain. I mean, how difficult is it going to be for one of his umpteen lieutenants to step into his place? Not very.
I suppose it might make our troops feel a little better about why they are over there, at least temporarily.

DennyMcLain 06-08-2006, 04:16 PM It's now up to psy ops to generate interest in the notion that the effort is officially over, with the "masterminds" all dead and only hack lieutenents now running the show, or, generate interest in a NEW faction that's really a CIA front, and massacre the new followers when the numbers are high enough.
Just saying....
b-diddy 06-08-2006, 04:22 PM getting OT on the OT, but who here would support using torture on terrorrists? since they obviously abide by no formal treaties or conventions, why should we?
tahoe's post is why im bringing this up.
Uncle Mxy 06-08-2006, 04:49 PM What is the terrorist terrorizing and how? How does the would-be torturer know they're torturing a terrorist? How would you prevent that from being abused? What would be the gain from it... wouldn't the terrorists simply babble what they thought you wanted to hear if you tortured the shit out of them?
Shaq was terrorizing Ben Wallace on the boards! Anticipating Shaq's terrorism, the four-time DPOY took matters into his own hands, pulling a machete out of his 'fro. He methodically sliced Shaq's feet to the knees in tiny little slivers, amidst the squeal of Shaq's man-cries, demonstrating a level of offensive performance the likes of which we've never seen from Ben. "Now he's down to size! Wonder how long he'll be on the injured reserve list?", Ben told reporters at the post-game.

Break a few eggs to make an omelet. You'll find no mercy or sympathy coming from me. I would hope that they would be "known" terrorists.
I don't believe he ever existed in the first place.
One day he's fat, then the next day he looks like subzero off mortal kombat. One day he needs a mask to cut off someone's head (and gets positively ID'd through it), next day he's wearing new balance shoes and acting like rambo. Fuck that shit.
Uncle Mxy 06-08-2006, 06:05 PM And if they're not "known" terrorists? What if they're only "suspected"? Do you wire their 'nads to electrodes and cauterize assholes with a white-hot poker and hot peppers without proof beyond a reasonable doubt? After you slit their eyelids, serve them some soylent green remains of their compatriots, and run through a Abu Ghraib-style mock execution or three, exactly what have you've accomplished? Especially if they're operating in loose cells, what sort of knowledge do you get that you wouldn't have after already breaking up the cell -- that they hate America? Or do we do this just for retaliation, for sadistic pleasure romps?
"Do we torture" sounds like movie-plot bullshit to me.
Tahoe 06-08-2006, 08:20 PM The shit that went on at Abu Ghraib was pretty fucking stupid and demented, imo. But when you catch a piece of snakes ass like this fuck, who beheaded innocent peeps, I feel torture is completely acceptable for saving lives of Iraqis or US citizens.
I also am willing to give up some of my freedoms if it helps the country fight the war on terror. I could care less if they want to listen to my phone calls.
Just trying to add some ballance.
Uncle Mxy 06-08-2006, 09:27 PM Does torturing really save lives? How can torture be applied to yield truly productive information in the real world and not in a movie? How does torture balance with the martyrdom and the overall escalation of violence this leads to? I betcha Abu Ghraib's indirectly led to lots of deaths that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Unless you're talking propaganda warfare, torture (as distinct from the -threat- of torture) hasn't been reported to be productive.

For me, when you catch the bad guy, you want all the info he has. If you ask him and he tells you, go check it out and see if what he is telling you is true. If it isn't true, raise the stakes a little, or quite a little bit.
And although I said it, it doesn't really matter to me if we save lives or not if you caught someone like AZ. If he feels like he about to meet his maker, so be it. If he feels excruciating pain, thats even better. He made choices in life that will come back to haunt him. Something all humans should understand.
Abu-Ghraib is for another thread if you ask me. That isn't the use of torture that I'm trying to discuss. That was some stupid shit. And it didn't help one bit.

Abu Ghraib was pre-planned to show the Iraqis that we punish our own when it comes to the kind of horrific acts Sadaam pulled off every day.
Guantamato Bay is all about the "re-education" and "re-insertion" of terrorists, who will destroy from within.
Iraq is all about confining al Quaeda to a designated space, rather than searching for them around the globe.
It's all really quite simple.
Right, gecko?

Typically, the best way to do that isn't to torture the baddie, but instead to put the screws on who they care about. Direct torture beyond interrogation isn't that effective, so why bother?
And although I said it, it doesn't really matter to me if we save lives or not if you caught someone like AZ. If he feels like he about to meet his maker, so be it. That's the logic that's led to millenia of conflicts in that region, because...

...such abuse inevitably gets turned into a rallying cry for the other side. An eye for an eye, and everyone's blind.
I feel that torture demands a level of collective perfection that humans just don't have. We must perfectly hide the fact that we're engaged in torturing, forever and ever, to avoid negative propaganda. We have to perfectly know that who we're torturing is worthy, and why. When your collective includes folks with "I love to make a grown man piss himself" attitudes (a direct quote from one of the Abu Ghraib troops), then embracing torture isn't the answer. For the religious folks out there, why not let God be the ultimate judge?
We do this kind of shit, and the terrorists win because we become them.

Keeping it secret is a good idea. It's true that sometimes you have "ticking bomb" type of situtations that might require it but it should never become routine. The government tends to want to apply whatever tools it has as broadly as possible. Government chimpanzees are always looking at the next tree over and will mimic any clever behavior they see. (RICO well beyond the mafia, Patriot Act isn't just for terrorism any more, local police hooding suspects).
If torture becomes just another wrench in the toolbox, its broader use will get justified a lot like this...
Break a few eggs to make an omelet. You'll find no mercy or sympathy coming from me. I would hope that they would be "known" terrorists.

Pelosi officially called for the resignation of William Jefferson from his committe work. She is one of the only ones to do so, and she did it right from the beginning. She said basically that she wasn't going to let people like you call her a hypocrite, and she would treat democrats the same as republicans.

What shit = Torture. And I don't think you can have an abstract discussion about contexts in which it's ok to torture without discussing all the real-world cases where torture has run amok, be it Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, Auschwitz, the Inquisition, etc.
But really, I've had enough of torture for one thread, so no more torture talk from me here in this thread. Feel free to carry on this particular topic without me.

Abu Ghraib to me was...maybe I'm splitting hairs here... was criminal. It should be treated as a crime. It shouldn't be discussed, imo, as a 'from the top down' policy of torture, because imo, it wasn't from the top down. If it was, I think more higher up would be impicated. Nancy and her band would be all over it.
So I might not be making myself clear but Abu Ghraib wasn't US policy type of torture to save lives, that was criminal acts that have been dealt with.

The administration had nothing to do with it. In fact, with most military operations, the less politics mixed into it, the better.
The only thing self-serving politicians can do is get soldiers killed due to their selfish agendas -- Democrats and Republicans alike. Officers go to places like West Point to fight, not to worry about how a particular military operation is going to affect the coffers of a particular political contributor.
Don't attack the building THAT WAY... how are we going to explain it to the American people? Don't use C-130's for repressive fire, innocent kids might die. Armor? For Humvees? Too expensive... and the armor manufacturer supported Kerry, so fuck 'em (well, I don't know if THAT'S true).

so in that token i agree, if they hadnt told them to send far less troops, ignored their warnings of how fucked up it was going to be, and fired every general that doesnt speak what they want to hear when they asked for their opinion on what was to be expected of invading Iraq. Taymelo 06-11-2006, 06:41 AM BAGHDAD, Iraq(AP) A gunbattle erupted as British soldiers responded to a fire in a vegetable market in southern Iraq on Sunday, leaving two people dead and a 7-year-old boy injured, police said.
Gunmen started the fire around 7 a.m. in south Amarah, 180 miles southeast of Baghdad, to lure in coalition forces, Police Capt. Hussein Karim said. The shooting erupted between the gunmen and British soldiers who responded.
In northern Baghdad, a roadside bomb struck an Iraqi police car near a mosque, killing one officer and wounding three others. Drive-by gunmen nearby fired on a civilian car in a separate incident, killing the driver.
Police in west Baghdad said they found the body of a security guard who worked for the Health Ministry. The man appeared to have been shot in the head after being tortured.
Of course, this is AFTER an islamic website showed 3 people being beheaded at the same time.
Good thing we got that Zarqawi. Now there won't be an "insurgency", right?

NP is a hypocrite. The only thing she can say is 'culture of corruption' and now its in her tent too, and she is now not using that line...as much anyway. The corruption in with Dems pulled poor NP rug right out from underneath her. She represents one of the most liberal districts in the country so she has to say the shit she says, but what amazes me is that she can say it with a straight face. She must have went to acting school.

Its like Pelosi constantly talking about 'culture of corruption' with the Reps but won't mention the crooks in her tent.
Bunch of fucking hypocrites.
Do any conservatives get any facts right, ever?
Pelosi officially called for the resignation of William Jefferson from his committe work. She is one of the only ones to do so, and she did it right from the beginning. She said basically that she wasn't going to let people like you call her a hypocrite, and she would treat democrats the same as republicans.
Of course, if you watch Fox News, you wouldn't know news, facts, politics, or current events, just that "democrats are hypocrits".

WASHINGTON(AP) Add political banishment to the list of problems confronting Rep. William Jefferson, ensnared in a bribery scandal that fellow Democrats hope to turn to their election-year advantage.
"Democrats are determined to hold a high ethical standard," the party's leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, said Thursday night after engineering a 99-58 vote of the rank and file that stripped Jefferson of his seat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.
"This isn't about proof in the court of law. This is about an ethical standard," Pelosi said. "I wish that the White House would do the same."
Democrats long have accused Republicans of nourishing a "culture of corruption" in Congress, and signaled their desire to make ethics a key issue in their drive to win control of the House in the November elections.
The vote came despite a final plea from Jefferson and persistent complaints from members of the Congressional Black Caucus, which said the Louisianan was being sanctioned without a rule or a precedent to justify it.
For his part, Jefferson conceded to reporters he faced "serious allegations" in connection with an investigation that has netted two convictions. The congressman maintains his innocence and has not been indicted, although the FBI says it found $90,000 in bribe money several months ago stashed in a food freezer in his home.
With the action of the Democratic caucus subject to ratification by the full House, Jefferson publicly left open for the first time that he might be willing to give up his committee seat voluntarily.
"I don't want to speculate," he said.
Within an hour of the vote, Jefferson disclosed he had offered on Wednesday to step aside on two conditions. They were that the caucus establish a rule covering cases like his and that his seat on Ways and Means go temporarily to a fellow Louisiana Democrat, Rep. Charles Melancon.
Pelosi, who controlled the votes to prevail in a showdown, declined the offer.
"So it was her decision to expose the rift in this caucus and to move forward with this unjust action," Jefferson said in a statement.
The vote in a closed-door meeting of Democrats marked the culmination of Pelosi's effort to stake out the high election-year ground on ethics.
The issue was a difficult one for many Democrats, and some members of the black caucus have privately appealed to Jefferson in recent weeks to step aside voluntarily.
Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, a member of the Democratic leadership as well as the black caucus, said the rank and file had confronted "two competing interests _ the legal interest and the political interest."
While the vote was not close, it also underscored the concern among Democrats that Jefferson was being sanctioned arbitrarily.
The chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Melvin Watt of North Carolina, said after the vote that by taking the action they did, fellow Democrats chose "political expediency" or some other unacceptable factor over precedent. "Even at the end of the meeting, we don't know what the standard has been," he said.
Watt said that constituents of some lawmakers will adopt the view that race was a factor in the decision. "I think there are people who will say that's the basis," he said. Blacks are among the Democrats' most loyal voters.
Democrats earlier in the evening rejected a call to sidetrack the proceedings until a rule had been adopted to cover situations like Jefferson's. Rep. Steven Rothman, D-N.J., said he sought the step because without rules, the action was "extraordinarily arbitrary."
Got any more LOL's, fucking Fox News sheep dumbass who doesn't know shit other than what's been brainwashed into him?
Uncle Mxy 06-16-2006, 09:50 AM I got how this went on the subject of torture. It started out with Tahoe saying he'd like Zarqawi tortured and b-diddy asking how acceptable it'd be to torture the torturers. I sorta got the link back to Zarqawi.
But, as with most things that happened over five minutes ago, it was so long ago that I forgot just how the hell Nancy Pelosi factored in. Digging back, it starts right about here:
And why isn't Kennedy, Pelosi and Kerry giving kudos to the administration?
Or are they just able to criticize the admin for NOT capturing AZ?
Why should they give kudos to the administration, as distinct from the troops?

Pelosi: "I salute the efforts of the American troops who worked tirelessly to track down the terrorist Zarqawi".

Kerry: Coalition forces "did an incredible job hunting him down and destroying him, and all of America is proud of their skill and commitment".

Kennedy: "Zarqawi was a vicious terrorist organizer and murderer, and our troops and the Iraqi security forces both deserve great credit for tracking him down.
Heck, I credit the troops more than the administration. Our administration let Zarqawi live when we had chances to kill him years ago, so as to not ruin our support from would-be allies in the Iraq war. We let the known terrorist go in favor of Saddam's unknown WMDs, which should rightly be the target of some criticism by all concerned. Until we turned Iraq into this breeding ground for terrorists, Zarqawi was mostly focused on Jordan (land of milfy queens) and his involvement with Iraq was minimal. The administration turns Iraq into a bad terrorist neighborhood as part of their action. Why should that aspect get praise? <confused>
Its like Pelosi constantly talking about 'culture of corruption' with the Reps but won't mention the crooks in her tent.
Bunch of fucking hypocrites.
They're all crooks. Demonicans and Republicrats get it half right.
Tahoe 06-16-2006, 10:01 AM And why should Pelosi give cred to the admin for getting AZ? Because she ripped the admin fo not getting him. If they are at fault for not getting him, then they must be respsonsible for getting him.
I agree on they are all crooks. But I still laugh my ass off every time I think of sweet nancy. Her message of "culture of corruption" (and laying it ALL ALL on the Republicans) is, lets say, complicated by the Dems own troubles.
And Delay stepped down, so I'm not sure what the ho is talking about wishing the WH would do the same.
Uncle Mxy 06-16-2006, 10:31 AM We could've gotten Zarqawi a long time ago, the administration intervened, and we didn't. Check out:

That's not new news, it's something to be critical of, and I'd thought that left, right, and center criticized the administration on this issue at various points. I did not pay much attention to Pelosi's rhetoric in particular on the matter. It's not just about "not getting him", but the administration vetoing getting him when the troops had him in their sights, and for little gain. So, you blame the administration, but praise the troops, and that's what they've done here.
Tahoe 06-16-2006, 11:36 AM Its early in the morning...I might get nauseous going to slate this early.
Were mistakes made? Yep. Anyone who thinks they could have run this war without mistakes are fooling themselves. I bet even sweet Nancy would have made an error or 2. I laugh just mentioning her. She is a great source of humor for me. Sorry!
In retrospect Bush goofed too, when OBL was in the hills and we were bombing the area, had him surrounded and he started negotiating with some of the tribesman and he got a away. Clinton could have had him years earlier. It happens.
Uncle Mxy 06-16-2006, 01:10 PM The thing with Osama in Tora Bora was that the troops were fresh to the scene, we had no specific sighting of him, no general was near the battle scene, and we made assumptions on local support we shouldn't have (which we learned from in subsequent activity in Afghanistan). With Zarqawi, we knew where he lived, slept, etc. for many months at many times, and didn't kill him because our adminstration specifically said "don't do that". One's a tactical goof (it wasn't like we weren't trying to get him, which was the strategy), while the other seems more strategic (Iraq > "war on terror").
As an aside, while Osama's a hugely important symbolic target, he will be replaced if we don't defuse terrorism and pronounced anti-American sentiment in the region. It's quite possible we could kill Osama in a way that turns him into a martyr for generations of future terrorists if we're not real careful.
b-diddy 06-17-2006, 02:26 PM i think i would be more supportive of the war if it wasnt so politicized. if we were in there, and our only agenda was reconstructing iraq as quickly and efficiently as possible, this war would be fairly well recieved.
why did we bomb this dude? why didnt they just attempt to capture him alive, or atleast leave his house standing on the off chance that valuable info could be gleaned from it.
everyone says we're screwed either way with these terrorists: leave them alive as your enemy or kill them and create a martyr. why not just arrest them and let them rot in jail?
