View Full Version : The Stanley Cup Finals: The best games that NOBODY is watching

So I figured I'd tune in for the first game to see how these teams square off against one another. What I got was one of the best postseason games I have ever seen. We got a 5-4 game with a penalty shot, a goalie that's out for the season, and a game winner with 30 seconds left.

For anyone who is even remotely curious about hockey, I suggest watching at least one of these games just to see two great teams that really want to destroy each other. Good times.

With Roloson out for the series, Edmonton will be hard pressed to win.

Well...it could be a perfectly good opportunity for one of the back-ups to really step up and make this a series....but it is really unlikely. The only upside is that this scrappy Edmonton will do whatever it can to make it a series.

I take it all back....holy shit did Edmonton get clobbered. It's hardly in the books but I think that The Oilers are writing a new definition for the word GRIM.

It looks like Carolina is on their way to a cup.

I actually turned it on, and had to turn it off. That was bad.

It actually makes a difference when it's on NBC or OLN. On OLN, I didn't watch a second, but game 3 on NBC, I almost watched the whole game.

Good game BTW.

no no no no no. im a lifelong hockey, red wings, and stevie y fan. hockey was my best sport to play as well, i was a ruthless defender. but for two reasons i havent watched much this year. one, i didnt like the rule changes after the lockout. i liked 1-0 or 2-1 games a lot more than these 7-5 games. goals used to be exciting, now its no big deal most of the time. the shutdown goalie has been all but eliminated. two, there wasnt hardly anything on tv. i got to see all of one red wings game, regular season against the rangers. if they did show a wings playoff game here i wasnt home to see it. so im not a new fan, just didnt see much this year and lost complete interest after the wings got knocked out. i only watched the game last night because nothing was on. i was pissed the whole first period because there were what, five goals total? hence my above post, after the first period it was a damn good game.

The game has certainly changed.....some good, some bad. It's certainly more exciting for the casual fan, but I can see how you're frustrated given your background. All we can hope is that they don't drive the league straight into the ground.

UxKa
06-15-2006, 04:59 PM
you got it... my being a defender killed some of my appreciation for the games new high scoring rules. i hope the league picks back up though, and gets better tv coverage in the coming seasons. i know i mentioned something along these lines in the nba forum since the nba is eliminating defense too... but my opinion is the most popular sport in the world is soccer and thats low scoring like hockey used to be, a lot of times even more low scoring. so if the whole world loves low-scoring tight games, why dont americans dig that? its my opinion with any sport... football should be 14-10, basketball 80-70, hockey 2-1, baseball is about pitchers to me (i used to pitch) so i love pitcher duels. the more high scoring the games become in any sport, points are just that much less exciting especially in a sport like hockey where you are literally talking about just a couple scores. it also makes me mad because in 15 years all gordies and gretzkys etc records will be smashed. im not going to take anything away from the guys who kill those records because obviously they still have to be damn good, but we will definitely have to draw a line between the old records and the records that will be set in years to come. i will still love hockey though, and wish i had enough friends around here who can skate so we could play some street hockey.

Well I'm split on the new rules. The good was good, but the bad was really bad. I like the fact that the league is trying to eliminate what I like to call "The European Influence". All the clutching a grabbing has to go. The problem is that the players used to police themselves by sending their token "goon" out to deal with that shit. Now that is no more as well. The shootouts were fun to watch, but the teams that milked that (Dallas, for one) got bounced in a hurry.

So what do you think they need to do to improve? Yeah, the TV coverage sucks, but what else do you think needs to change?

UxKa

So what do you think they need to do to improve? Yeah, the TV coverage sucks, but what else do you think needs to change?

i think the only rule change i like is the 2-line passing being legal. there were too many play stoppages just because a guy passed the puck a bit too far. since there is still offsides, which is good, its not like that gives players a free breakaway or anything. i think the goalies should have their old equipment back, and their movement shouldnt be restricted. i think the new hooking/holding/etc rules are good, it should be and is like blocking in football... you have to have your shoulders square and not be behind the guy (bertuzzi). im particularly against cross-checking.. when i played, so many parents hated me because i hit hard and because of that i would hold my stick completely away from my body in the opposite hand of the shoulder i was leading with. that way they really had no reason to bitch other than they just saw their kid get leveled lol. basically now they have to lead with the shoulder and thats how i played so im cool with it. lastly, i dont like shootouts. going back to the soccer thing, if the teams played evenly then they played evenly and the game shouldnt be decided. i think that covers all the main rule changes, let me know if i forgot something.

edit: #1 improvement, wings win the cup ;)

I'd have to admit -- those Raleigh fans are beserk! Never liked the concept of a Carolina HOCKEY team, but these fans are really vocal, and sound like they know the game well enough not to explode at every little thing (unlike Kings fans).

Cam Ward is a machine.

I'm not into hockey as much as I used to be, but when that Cup comes out on to the ice, I still get bumps. Seeing Brind'amour's face reminds me just how much a part of life hockey is to these guys.

When an NBA player wins the championship, it means bragging rights, more money, and the opportunity to be a part of the pinnacle of basketball.

To NHL players, the Stanley Cup is their pinnacle of LIFE. You can see it in their faces as they kiss the cup.

On a lighter note, those Carolina fans who touched the cup upon it's walk on to the ice should be shot! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TOUCH THE CUP UNLESS YOU WIN IT!!!!

Ummm.... sorry, I think that only applies to players. Lower yer gun, Jeb.

C'mon, you know I had to watch this game....and it was F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!

I really wanted Edmonton to win, but Carolina demands respect after a game like that. Score aside, they beat the shit out of the Oilers.

Great game to end the season.

Curling for one.

Also, I didn't watch this shit. Sorry to let you all down.
I think "Laguna Beach" on MTV2 had higher ratings.
I watched World Cup Soccer replays. Great times.

I only watched at the end when it was close, and the celebratrion. Whatever sport it is, I always watch the celebration. It's awesome.

celebration[/B]. It's awesome.

You could see the excitement on their faces. They looked and sounded like kids out there and they've been dreaming of this since they were old enough to know what it was.

I dont see it to this level on the faces of any other championship team
