This is a tough blow. Someone is going to have to step up in this rotation.
Glenn 06-01-2006, 12:15 PM Might need to make a move now.
I wonder if Dmitri could yield us a #5 starter in return?

Dmitri could get you maybe a sack of potatoes....
I am guessing it could be Colon, Miner, Ledezma, or maybe Zumaya....
Gecko 06-01-2006, 12:25 PM Ok lets go get Dontrell now.
kidding but not really, lets do it!
Glenn 06-01-2006, 12:26 PM I bet if the Tigers were willing to pay most of Dmitri's salary and/or take on a large salaried SP in return they could get something done.
This is what I have been waiting to see.
Will Illitch put his $ where his mouth is?
Tahoe 06-01-2006, 12:45 PM At least its jus bone chips, not tommy john surgery. I don't know that much about it but would guess this is minor compared to TJ stuff.
JL said he didn't want to upset the pen. Not sure if he meant that just for Colons start or long term.
Anthony 06-01-2006, 02:52 PM Hurry back MM.
Anyways, i'm guessing Colon stays in the rotation? If so: urgh.
Hermy 06-01-2006, 03:02 PM Hurry back MM.
Anyways, i'm guessing Colon stays in the rotation?
No.
Vinny 06-01-2006, 03:04 PM Colon's so much better in the bullpen, I hope they pull him. I'm guessing Ledezma might get another shot, but if he can't get it done this time, that might be it for him.
Darth Thanatos 06-01-2006, 03:18 PM Damn. This is absolutely terrible news.
BRING BACK NATE CORNEJO!
DrRay11 06-01-2006, 03:21 PM It's going to be Miner or Ledezma, I'd think.
H1Man 06-01-2006, 03:22 PM Hurry back MM.

No.
I think Colon gets one more shot before he is pulled from the rotation. If he doesn't pitch well against the Red Sox, then I would look for Miner or Ledezma to replace him.
Glenn 06-01-2006, 03:29 PM How many young pitchers can they really count on though?
We've been lucky as hell that Verlander, Zumaya, Colon, etc. have delivered, but how many times can you go to that well if you want to be a legit contender?
Eventually, some/most of these young guys are going to hit the wall, hopefully not all at the same time.
I agree with GD. These guys are young and we need to be proactive. The team is sliding persay so the time is right to bolster the team. I am not sayiing that we are in need of a move because of the losing but rather it is harder to justiy a trade when you just won 15 of 16. Pulling off a deal following a losing streak and injury is the right time.
I think a deal can be found now. Willis might be the right guy but will be costly and impossible. I think that Seattle may look to dump salary soon Moyer would be great veteran to replace Maroth. Washburn is lilkely also available but is a big salary beyond this year. Washington is looking to dump players and it is expected Stanton (LHRP) and Livian Hernandez will be shopped both would bolster the staff in terms of exp. Perhaps Baltimore would be willing to lose an arm to save money in a hopeless division for them. Lastly the Cubs may look to move Maddux and/or Wood. Maddux provides the soft compliment the team wants after a fireballer but is a RHP not a LHP like Maroth. Wood is high risk high reward and may come at a discount. Cubs also have Rusch but hae not indicated that they would shop him.
Glenn 06-01-2006, 03:57 PM Moyer, Livan & Maddux are all great suggestions IMO, JS.
I don't know how plausible a deal for Maddux is but to me it is a win win. He is a pitcher who would greatly be helped by Comerica and the lineup. He knows how to win and if he does well can turn his winning in a Pitcher's park into one last big pay day. He is also a Boras Client so I am sure Boras would relay to him Detroit would be willing to pay up to keep him. For the team it is another veteran to learn from, and another great example of how having a few good pitches is just as valuable as having a blazing FB.
Dream trade that is not Willis like in dreaming...Smoltz returning to finish his career at home.
Glenn 06-01-2006, 04:19 PM Actually, I was only half listening to Mike/Mike this morning on my commute but I could swear that I overheard them saying that the Cubs are interested in entertaining offers for Maddux.
Yeah he is a FA next season and if the cubs don't trade Wood and/or Prior both are do for big paydays along with Zambrono (sp) which makes Maddux too pricey as a 4th or 5th option. The way I look at Maddux for us is Percy is being paid by insurance therefore it not like we are adding his salary to our 06 budget, if we keep him at 6-8 million it is wash in 07 when TP and Dy's contracts expire.
H1Man 06-01-2006, 05:56 PM Perhaps, I spoke too soon.
Miner will start on Sunday and Colon will be working out of the bullpen from now on.
Edit: Posted Link and Story.
Rotation change
The other shoe fell with news of Mike Maroth's injury. Zach Miner will start Sunday instead of Roman Colon, who will work out of the bullpen from now on. Leyland wouldn't commit to Miner beyond a couple starts, but if someone else gets a shot, it looks like the next guy would come from the Minors.
Also, Chris Shelton has this game off after struggling the last few games. Carlos Guillen is starting at first base.

Darth Thanatos 06-02-2006, 01:52 PM That Kyle Farnsworth trade might turn out to be better than the Urbina trade.
