It's a good thing we didn't needlessly blow any of those games to the Twins or the Royals, because now the Tigers are heading into the meat of their schedule. Over the next 16 games, we play every team in the American League that is at or above .500 with the exception of the Rangers, with 3 each against Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Toronto, and 4 against the Yankees. No more cream puffs. This part of our schedule can either firmly establish us as title contenders or knock us down to the ranks of the also rans real fast, and if we can even come out of it at or near .500 (8-8), we'll be looking pretty good still. I really doubt we'll keep winning every day, though, (yeah, I know I'm going out on a limb on that one...) and there will probably be a few real ugly losses mixed in as well, so don't get discouraged.
Everything get's started Friday with Cleveland in town at 7:05. The Indians got off to a pretty slow start this year but make no mistake, this team is for real. They've started to get back into a groove the last few weeks, and if the Tigers slip up at all, the Indians will be ready to pounce. They've got a great young lineup, anchored by one of the most intimidating hitters in the game, Travis Hafner, and the best hitting catcher in the game, Victor Martinez. Ben Broussard, Casey Blake and Grady Sizemore are off to great starts as well at the plate, and while Johnny Peralta has been slumping so far, he's still a Grade A talent who can bust out at anytime.
We swept the Tribe in Cleveland earlier this month, so hopefully we can keep the pressure on this weekend. I say we take 2 of 3 and keep rolling for now.
