Tigers' Dmitri Young charged with domestic violence
Woman claims baseball player choked her at hotel

A romantic evening between Detroit Tiger player Dmitri Young and a 21-year-old college student at a posh Birmingham hotel, ended in an argument and then a struggle, police said Wednesday.

Young, 32, is accused of choking his former girlfriend in the early morning hours of April 14, while the two were staying at the Townsend Hotel.

Young was charged Tuesday with domestic violence, a misdemeanor, and is expected to turn himself in to authorities on Monday in a deal worked out between police and Young’s attorney, police said.

“It’s a bum deal,” Young told the Free Press Wednesday. “Unfortunately it’s public knowledge. I don’t see this person any more.”

Young is a designated hitter for the Tigers. He came to the Tigers in 2002 from the St. Louis Cardinals.

If convicted, Young faces a maximum sentence of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

A spokesman for the Tigers said it would be inappropriate to comment on the incident.

Birmingham Police said that the woman, of Toledo, Ohio, reported the incident to them three days later, after going to see a doctor. Police said she had bruises on her hip and leg, and photographs that show scratches on her neck, upper body and leg.

Birmingham Police Detective John Heppner said Young’s accuser told investigators that the couple had been dating for about two years. The detective declined to release the name of the woman because Young has yet to be arraigned in 48th District Court.

Heppner said the woman claims she and Young went out for dinner at a swanky Birmingham restaurant, had drinks at the Blue Martini, and then, checked into a room at the Townsend Hotel, which is known for catering to celebrities.

Between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., the couple began quarreling about their relationship and Young, who is divorced, became violent, Heppner said the woman claimed. He said there was yelling, and the woman tried to defend herself.

“Her claim is that he grabbed her around the neck and choked her,” Heppner said.

After that, Heppner said, the woman left the hotel and drove herself home.

The next afternoon, Heppner said, the woman went to a hospital for an examination, and took photographs of her injuries.

Young, who is 6 foot 2 inches, and 225 pounds, was charged with domestic violence instead of assault and battery, Heppner said, because the two had a long-term relationship.

I hope that the Tigers consider releasing Young, if we can't find a trade partner.

And I am not basing my decision on just this one issue either.

Last season, there were reports that Young refused to suit up once he hit enough at-bats to trigger his contract option. And this season, MLive had an report where it was mentioned that the players are getting frustrated about Young's recovery time from the quadriceps injury. And given the fact that he hasn't been healthy enough to contribute anything to the Tigers, nobody will miss him if he were to go.

Thames, Gomez and even guys like Ludwick, Phelps could probably replace his production.

At least he didn't throw a bat at the woman.

This is funny in the ironic weird sense, I mean after his brother went crazy, all the media and player reactions was about how Delmon was a stark contrast of Dmitri. Most everyone said DY is a top 5 great guy in MLB. What a dumbass if this is true. Pretty sad if I do say so, not only can't he hit on the field he doesn't do off, at least he is consistent he chokes in both cases.

This fuckin' sucks. They have to ship him and his salary to another team. This is not the kind of press we need right now.

I would love to see Thames get all the PT that DY would have gotten.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Detroit Tigers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/det/) designated hitter Dmitri Young (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5699/) did not appear at a scheduled court hearing to face a domestic violence charge Tuesday, leading a judge to require his lawyer to provide documentation of the player's whereabouts by the end of the day.
Young was accused of choking a 21-year-old woman on April 14 at the Townsend Hotel in suburban Detroit. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, the 32-year-old Young could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
William Swor, Young's lawyer, faxed the court of Judge Diane D'Agostini on Monday asking that the pretrial hearing be delayed because Swor was scheduled to be in federal court in Miami on Tuesday for a different case.
D'Agostini rejected the request, and neither Young nor Swor were present in court on Tuesday morning.
Assistant Oakland County prosecutor Tare Wigod said Swor told him that Young had a medical emergency and was out of state. D'Agostini ordered proof by the end of the day that Young was housed at a legitimate medical facility. She also ordered Swor to appear in her courtroom on Friday.
There was no immediate comment Tuesday from Swor or Adam Katz, Young's agent. Young, who was placed on the disabled list last month with an irritation of a strain in his right quadriceps, is hitting .169 in 59 at-bats with four RBIs this season. He is in his 11th major league season and fifth with Detroit.
