View Full Version : WTFDetroit's new look (Feedback/questions go here)
The Syndicate 04-25-2006, 08:03 AM As of Tuesday morning (4/25/06) we're approximately 90% done with our upgrade. We say 90%, because there are bound to be some wrinkles here and there we need to address.
Everyone needs to re-post their avatars. Currently we are set up to allow you to upload them from your computer to WTFDetroit.com's server, but that may change at some point.
We're working on getting the default time set to EST, but in the meantime, you can fix the time of day for where you are in your profile settings, now under "User CP".
Also, please bear with us while we work on restoring access to several "Areas". You can rest assured that we're not just sitting back drinking "Champagne", we're working on it.

If I point to a URL that has my avatar (vs. uploading from my local laptop), and click on "Save Changes", I get:
Remote file uploads have been disabled.
Change is frightening. Also, WHERE THE HELL IS "View posts since last blah blah blah" ?

We're working on that right now. The mods that they have out right
now are virtually unknown and just trying them out is a little crazy.
Who knows what the consequences would be at this point.
Hang tight though. We'll get it done.
MOLA1 04-25-2006, 10:52 AM Change is frightening. Also, WHERE THE HELL IS "View posts since last blah blah blah" ?
We'll have to install that feature. I like that shit.
In the meantime, there's a View Today's posts under the Quick Links above.
Cross 04-25-2006, 11:08 AM To be honest, the layouts cooler, but for some reason, it looks smaller in a way.
once I adjust to this, it will kick some ass.
I guess we have to wait on the emoticons?
Glenn 04-25-2006, 11:09 AM This is kinda cool:
How do I rate a thread?
You may find a small menu on thread pages which allows you to 'rate this thread' with a number between 1-5.
Casting a vote for threads you view is entirely optional, but if you think that the thread is superb, you might rate it as a 5-star thread, or if you think that it's unspeakably dismal, you might choose to rate the thread with a single star.
Once enough votes have been cast for the thread rating, you may see a set of stars appear with the title of the thread in the thread listings. These stars reflect the average vote cast, and can allow you to quickly see which threads are worth reading if you are on a very busy forum with a lot of threads.
Lots of interesting features explained in the FAQ.

Not a biggie -- just letting you know since it was strange.
If you upload the avatar from your local system, it seems to work ok (though my transparent GIF of an avatar isn't so transparent anymore, it seems).
It'd be nice if the skyline image wasn't quite so dominating. It takes up 40% of my laptop's display when I click "reply"

Scroll to the bottom of the page to where it says "Smilies are on".
If you click on the word "smilies" you'll see the whole menu of emoticons.

It is a little smaller. It doesn't stretch across the entire screen.
Also, the emoticons are there homie.[smilie=lbjapan.gif]

Damn! What resolution are you on?
Cross 04-25-2006, 11:15 AM Im loving the whole wait until 30 seconds until you can post the next reply.
When i first looked at it, I thought the previous one would be better, but now once you get to use it, it becomes alot more better.
Thanks syndicate
DrRay11 04-25-2006, 11:18 AM I can't see any text except in quote boxes... I'm also on a Mac, does that make a difference?

i changed it.....during games, it'd suck to have to wait 30 seconds :D it's 5 seconds between posts now.
I can't see any text except in quote boxes... I'm also on a Mac, does that make a difference?
that's very strange.....it might be. have you tried on a different computer?
DrRay11 04-25-2006, 11:29 AM No, I haven't tried on a Windows yet--The way I see your post now is by copying what appears to me as the blank space in your post and pasting it in the quick reply.

How about now?
Uncle Mxy 04-25-2006, 12:11 PM Damn! What resolution are you on?
Often, it's 1024x768 mode, but even at 1280x1024 the skyline still takes up a fairly big chunk of screen real estate. It'd be nice if that image were only at the Forum page and not at the top of every thread and reply. I have to scroll down just to click on "Submit Reply". In general, I find myself having to scroll down more.
DennyMcLain 04-25-2006, 12:16 PM The new look is fine with me. On Firefox it runs perfect.
On Safari you can't see the text.
On my older version of IE, the layout is all screwy.
Anthony 04-25-2006, 12:18 PM Nice look M1.

I think that a big reason for that is the fact that the margins are there now.
When we were back on phpbb and using subsilver as our style, there weren't
any margins. I personally like this style better, but we welcome all of your input.
As far as the image at the top, it's weird because it's only 42 pixels taller.
It's smaller than I thought we were going to go, height wise. I think it's perfect.
It really can't be the image that's causing you to scroll, but either way,
enjoy the exercise! I kid you.
I have owned/moderated/used a couple vBulletin forums in the past for other websites, and the software is just more customizeable, powerful, and intergrative than the old phpBB boards.
Makes WTF that much better.
Good job MOLA, Matt & the rest of the crew.

It's an option in your profile.

DennyMcLain 04-25-2006, 02:58 PM I see that now one cannot merely post an emoticon as a reply. Replies must be min. three characters, and not more than 5 images.
TheKid = R.I.P.
H1Man 04-25-2006, 02:59 PM Is there any way you can increase the margins?
I am on a 1140 X 900 resolution, and it still looks all bunched up.
Outside of that, it looks great. Good work Syndicate.
theMUHMEshow 04-25-2006, 03:03 PM Good stuff fellas...
Gecko 04-25-2006, 03:57 PM How do I access spell check and all the emoticons. PM me cause I won't be back here looking for the answer.
I like the look but wish it stretched the screen more. I like rectangles and not squares :)
Artis Gilmore 04-25-2006, 04:00 PM I fucking hate this new look. One of the worst looks in the history of websites.

Try using another computer. The Commodore 64's at your school might not be compatible.

for some reason, asians have a good command on the english language, i suppose.
well, engrish at the very least.
avatar size limits increased to 200K
H1Man 04-25-2006, 09:22 PM I have just one major issue so far:
- The margins. They have got to increase. I have this whole section of info in a box in the middle of my screen with two huge blank spaces on the sides. Not only does it look ugly but it makes things hard to read because I have to scroll down way too often now.
DetTitan 04-25-2006, 09:26 PM over at SportInferno.com they have the site at 775 pixels wide in the center. It makes quite a bit of a difference from whatever this site is at. In fact , you could get rid of the margins altogether if you really wanted to. That would be cool too. But as it stands now, they are waaaaayyy too big.

fwiw, the center is 750 pixels right now. we'll try to make some adjustments to make things feel less cramped. i do think that the black accents give the illusion of things being more narrow than they really are. but the black accents are one my favorite parts of the layout
for reference, the two smilies are 32 pixels in width (and twice the happiness):
:):)
not that big a difference, imo. at least not worth making major changes.
Unibomber 04-26-2006, 01:25 AM I am not happy with this. Thus, I will do absolutely nothing about it.

If your issues are purely cosmetic, then don't worry. Just like vBulletin has user-selectable themes, and I'm sure the guys will be adding new ones soon.

I think the site looks way better than the default subsilver phpbb board they were using.
Are you guys usinhg vBadvanced for the front page layout or is that a feature that came with the newest vBulletin?

we stripped it down for a cleaner look. there are plenty of modules (like a mini calendar, buddy lists, etc). as far as being dynamic, it's cool because it uses the same skin as the forums. everything is full customizable, so we can use HTML to make custom "modules". good stuff.

Yeah, that's how Nuke Evolution is.
Pharaoh 04-26-2006, 10:34 AM Just wanna say for the viewing public that I think the upgrade is fully sick.
It looks fucking awesome, easy to use and there hasn't been a problem for me at all.
(except my av going missing but that's been explained)
So, thanks to Matt, Chris, Mola and all Syndicate members for paying for it.
And special thanks to whoever made this smiley:
[smilie=pharaoh.gif]
Pharaoh 04-26-2006, 10:35 AM BTW, if that smiley was present on the old WTF I never saw it.
Anthony 04-26-2006, 11:04 AM Whos ever in charge of the actuall programming of this bitch (matt?). Dont use pixles for the content box. Use a % Try 70% or 65%
That way it'll look the same on all screen res.
DrRay11 04-26-2006, 11:18 AM I'm in Safari now, and can't see the text, so I assume it's a problem with that.
DrRay11 04-26-2006, 11:32 AM Also, can we try another color? This baby blue Denver Nugget shit is making me sick... Although it's pretty easy on the eyes. I guess patience is key in you guys making some new themes and shit.
MoTown 04-26-2006, 12:13 PM I wasn't a big fan of this yesterday, but it's already starting to grow on me. This will make life a lot easier.
1) I don't like that it doesn't continue a quote chain (it only quotes the poster who you chose "quote" for, not whatever that poster quoted as well).
2) It finally auto-logged me in and I couldn't figure out how to get to the forums for like a minute and a half aside from choosing the "recent topics" list that it generated (all of which I had no interest in).
MOLA1 04-26-2006, 01:06 PM BTW, if that smiley was present on the old WTF I never saw it.

Yeah, there always seems to be a problem viewing vBulletin sites in Safari. The SI forums are the same way.
bangpow 04-26-2006, 01:51 PM But I do feel the need to mention again that this site looks dope as hell! I am really into the color scheme and the overall feel of the site. Good job!
Glenn 04-26-2006, 01:59 PM Thanks Bang.
We went through a lot of color schemes and looks, so it's nice to hear the positive feedback along with the concerns.
We do want both, though.
Baker 04-26-2006, 02:13 PM No offense to those in charge. I'm sure a ton of work went into the new look WTF. But, I'm hating the new layout of things. Quotes and things of that sort were much more user friendly before. I liked the old look better too. Not sure about the baby blue color either.
Like I said, no offense. I know how much time goes into these things. But, I wish we could have some tweaks. Anybody agree or maybe disagree?
bangpow 04-26-2006, 02:19 PM Thanks Bang.

A couple things I noticed.
1. When we receive a new PM, I don't see a pop up or any kind of indicator.
2. There's no direct link on the front page to go to the forum index in the toolbar up top.
3. There's no link back to the home page when you're in the forums.
These are all minor, but I figured I would mention them.

I'll let one of the techies handle #2 and #3, but as far as #1, there is a setting in your User CP for selecting how you want to be notified about PMs, and a popup window is one of those options.
MOLA1 04-26-2006, 02:23 PM 2, 3. We're going to set it up so that the banner points to the front page.

Glenn 04-26-2006, 02:25 PM Actually, I'll take #3 for you too, the "WTFDetroit.com" link at the bottom of every page takes you back to the home page. It's down by the Contact Us link.
Gecko 04-26-2006, 04:18 PM I am once again having problems with the Auto log in feature not working. Everytime I return to www.wtfdetroit.com (http://www.wtfdetroit.com) I need to put in my username and password. Checking the box is not working...suggestions?
Glenn 04-26-2006, 04:20 PM take off the www, use http://wtfdetroit.com
DrRay11 04-26-2006, 04:28 PM Glenn, I'm using it without the www. tag, and it's not auto-logging me either. Kind of blows.
MOLA1 04-26-2006, 04:30 PM I just usually type in my password. Lazy fucks. LOL.
I'm kidding. I think you need to roll without the www and maybe clear your cache.
DrRay11 04-26-2006, 04:40 PM I'll try that later MOLA...
On top of that, one last suggestion -- I second the notion to lessen the margins a bit (25-50 pixels each side). The margins are just massive and they'll never work for the main page, IMO. Overall, though, the look is growing on me.

For the front page, it's going to be a lot different.
We'll have a ton more content and that's down the line.
As for the forums...
If you were to browse on RealGM or on Hoopsworld or many forum based sites,
(that aren't nearly as cool as this one because they're fucking wack as fuck)
what you'd notice is that they have the same amount of space, if not more.
The difference is, we don't have ads filling up those spaces. I actually like this.
I browse in 1600X1200 and I think the spaces are tight. It looks crisp and clean.
DrRay11 04-26-2006, 04:53 PM Sure, MOLA, if the front page is different, then this is fine for the forums. The front page is what I was worried about... ;)

1) I don't like that it doesn't continue a quote chain (it only quotes the poster who you chose "quote" for, not whatever that poster quoted as well).
fixed. nested quoting now works fine.
everyone just needs to be responsible w/ nested quoting. too much and it looks like garbage on the page. if folks abuse it too much we'll have to turn it back off.

It's because I was coming here to ask the same thing.

I wasn't around before the server crashed, so I can only comment on what I saw before Tuesday, but I gotta say that this look is a helluva lot better than the DEFAULT Subsilver PHPBB forum that was used.
Also, to be fair to WTF, what you see on the front page isn't even remotely close to the full capabilities of vBadvanced. With the software they use, it will be easier for the staff members to post articles on the front page without having to send them to one person and wait for them to post them.
I think it's a good move for the site.

Like I said, vBulletin has user-selectable themes. They even have a plain-ass subSilver clone theme. I'm sure the guys will put it in.
Joe Asberry 04-26-2006, 10:21 PM its ok but why exactly does it just fill up half the screen? that kinda suckz
H1Man 04-27-2006, 12:20 AM How the heck do you get into the forums from the main page? There is no direct link to the forums. You have to click on one of the threads and then go the index.
And I hate that whole recent threads module on the front page. I don't really care as to what thread had the last reply, I just want to get into the forums.
Vinny 04-27-2006, 12:23 AM There's a link under that "Welcome" type. it opens in a new window, though, which I think should be changed, at least till there's some actual content on page one.

You could also bookmark http://wtfdetroit.com/forums/index.php and skip the front page altogether if you'd like.

Yeah, needs a link direct to the forums on the menu bar wouldn't hurt.
Might as well put up a chat link there too.
I'm sure our wishes will be fulfilled :p

guys, we really appreciate all the feedback. not just the positive ones (although, we like those too :D ). all the suggestions are definitely taken seriously.
also, the User Control Panel (where you can edit your sig, avatar, information, etc) is now located in the Quick Links drop down menu. i did this to make the menu bar look a little cleaner. LMK whatcha guys think. is the menu bar simple? cluttered?

Anthony 04-27-2006, 10:57 AM use wtfdetroit.com/forums
that works
robcat911 04-27-2006, 11:37 AM looks good, but like many others have said the side margins seem to be a waste of real estate. Makes me feel like my screen is half the size it usually is

You know, after looking at it for a couple days, I think the margins need to be a tinge wider. If not, than I don't mind either. It's kind of minor to me.
Although, you would probably have to redesign the banner up top, so nevermind.
edit: If you plan on putting up more modules or blocks on the front page, you might need the extra real estate on the screen.
Anthony 04-27-2006, 04:14 PM Like I said, whos ever programming this bitch, if your not going to put a compleate website around the forums, change the 750px table to about 80% not px. Use a %
It looks cleaner on every screen res.
If you guys need help with the HTML part, I know this shit like the back of my hand. Just say the word.
Anthony 04-27-2006, 04:33 PM Heres an example. This is 90% of the page with some very simple code changes.

I can walk any of you guys though the changes. Not hard to do at all.
BIG BEN'S FRO 04-27-2006, 04:42 PM Love the new format. Not a big fan of the margin, especially since my laptop is a widescreen.
BTW I have lost access to certain AREAS, and now I have been forced to drink CHAMPAGNE in my depression. Thanks for any help.

Actually I think it would be better if you move the Calendar and New Posts into the Quick Links menu as I don't think there are a lot of people that use those features.
Just my 2 cents. :)

realistic 04-28-2006, 11:34 PM Listen, if I can't jerkoff and read Pistons analysis at the same time, what the hell am I doing here?
Cross 04-29-2006, 12:17 AM For some reason, i cant edit posts. Anything?
New Posts is the shit. It works much better than "Posts since you last ..." (whatever the hell that was called).
For some reason, i cant edit posts. Anything?
strange. i double checked your permissions and you should be able to edit them.
Cross 04-30-2006, 01:14 AM it works now.
if this has been posted, sorry (i skimmed a few pages but theres 11 total :P)
when i log in i check 'remember me' and it never does. i tried both login boxes, and i even checked 'remember me' on both boxes to no avail. this logging in thing is killing me as i am addicted to the site and waste a lot of time logging in 100 times a day ;)
MOLA1 05-01-2006, 10:02 AM Does it show your name in the front page, but not your password?
From there click on forums. You should be logged in homie.

I had trouble with this earlier today too. I'd click edit repeatedly and nothing would happen. Then I tried like 5 minutes later and it worked. Strange.
Glenn 05-02-2006, 09:54 AM I don't think that anyone has mentioned this yet, but to me, the best new feature is that when you close your browser before reading all of the new posts, it doesn't mark them all as read like the old forum software did.
If I didn't have a good block of time at the old site, I wouldn't want to log in because if I had to log off before reading everything, it was all going to get marked as read.
vBulletin only marks the threads/forums as read if you actually read them or mark them read manually.
Pharaoh 05-02-2006, 10:49 AM Yes, the site has a lot of nice new features.
I'm not having any problems with it at all, so I'm extremely happy.
Vinny 05-02-2006, 02:51 PM I love that you can tell what threads you've posted in, too. Great stuff.
Does it show your name in the front page, but not your password?
From there click on forums. You should be logged in homie.
no, both boxes are blank when i come to the page. its only happening with this site and only since the layout change.

please try clearing your cookies. or if you're comfortable with it, try clearing just your WTFD cookies. conflicting cookies from the old forums might be causing the problems.
BIG BEN'S FRO 05-03-2006, 10:05 AM I use both a mac and a PC, and my Safari web browser doesn't load the posts, just the framework.
A little help pleasE?
Pharaoh 05-03-2006, 10:25 AM Read the thread BBF - been answered.
Oh, you can't read the posts?
Then why should I answer? You're not gonna be able to read it, right?
Cross 05-05-2006, 09:53 PM Shit, now I am officialy used to the "new look"
Pharaoh 05-06-2006, 04:07 AM I'm still not used to it.
It's gonna take a long time before I'm used to the style.
The features work though, which is the main thing. Colours and that kind of thing are secondary IMO.

DrRay11 05-09-2006, 03:40 PM I think I pretty much am alright with it now. It certainly takes some getting used to, though.
Anthony 05-09-2006, 04:29 PM Yeah, I'm good though

the champagne bottle's been popped. if you'd like a sip, just ask nicely.
Cross 05-10-2006, 06:13 PM I'm loving this place more and more. Although there have been some small additions, those small things make this place even better. Now theres an audio and video forum. Sweet
Some champagne to the syndicate
Darth Thanatos 05-10-2006, 06:39 PM Love the new look and feel.
9.99/10
It'd be nice if the list of "New Posts" showed the forum the thread was in. Its not always obvious from the thread title.

It doesn't show what forum it's in for you in the far right column?
That's odd, does for me.
Thank you Glenn, I never noticed it way over there.
Glenn 05-18-2006, 03:14 PM If the Pistons lose to the Cavs, maybe we should add a NBA subforum called "The Morgue"
realistic 05-18-2006, 03:23 PM Will the color scheme change when the forum transitions to the "Home to all things Cleveland"?

Hello, Cleveland!!
Serious suggestion/request:
Any chance to bring back the flash tags in the vBulletin upgrade?
Would make for some sick OGTs and such.

Just wait...we have some dope shit in the works homie.
Uncle Mxy 05-25-2006, 06:48 AM I haven't kept track of this thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating something that was already asked and answered. Why do we need both a "playoff" sub-forum and a separate "old playoff" sub-sub-forum? Why not just have one sub-forum for old playoff threads (Pistons game threads + threads on other teams playoff runs), and use the "NBA" forum for current playoff stuff?

back when the first round started and we had 8 game threads and one for each pistons game, we wanted to keep things looking clean and organized.
Uncle Mxy 05-25-2006, 08:03 AM For future reference, IMO, FWIW, I'd just sticky the active threads and make sure the inactive threads make it to the archives sooner rather than later. It'll be busy for awhile, but as the teams inevitably whittle down, it'll get clean.

Seriously, after all the time and money that MOLA has put into this place so you can use it for free I'd expect a little respect, especially from a mod.
No disrespect, but you sound like somebody that was just handed a $50 bill and is pissed off that it wasn't $51.
Anthony 05-25-2006, 01:04 PM No disrespect, but I dont give a shit. You took that very wrong.
