I thought it might be a good idea to have a Yankees-Red Sox thread.

Boss blasts A-Rod, Yanks after loss to BoSox

ESPN.com news services

It didn't take long for The Boss to get mad about the Yankees' 14-3 loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.

According to New York media reports, a clearly angry George Steinbrenner left Yankee Stadium in the eighth inning. Later, he vented his frustration to a group of reporters.

When asked what he thought of the game, Steinbrenner said, "What did you think of the game?" He then jabbed his fingers at reporters and repeated, "What did you think?"

Steinbrenner avoided singling out Randy Johnson, who gave up seven runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings.

"I'm upset at a lot of them," he said, before adding, "The third baseman."

Alex Rodriguez made a pair of errors at third base and 21-year-old Melky Cabrera, brought up when Gary Sheffield went on the disabled list before the game, dropped a fly to right field by Ramirez for a two-run error. New York, which allowed six unearned runs, had 12 errors coming in, tied for the second-fewest in the majors.

"Overall we just had an awful game. I had a real bad game," Rodriguez said.

Steinbrenner's mood was in stark contrast to his attitude before the game, when he said he expected the Yankees to play well against the Red Sox.

Crazy old fart needs to calm the hell down.

I'm watching the game now and I'm starting to dislike Ortiz. His fat ass is hogging the shit out of the plate and pitchers can't get him out.

I love Ortiz. Dude just flat out hits the ball.

Three seperate times have the Red Sox loaded the bases with less than two outs, and none of them ended up scoring.

LOL@Boston

I thought this was due for a bump with a huge 5 game series starting today with a day/night doubleheader.

Weird start to the game.

Yanks get a run in the 1st on 3 hits.

Boston gets a man to 2nd with one out on a double and Wang gets Ortiz to fly out and make it two outs.

Torre then decides to intentionally walk ManRam in the 1st inning with one on and two out to get to Youkilis.

He's lucky that worked out, that doesn't send a very good signal to your team IMO.

Manny Ramirez goes deep off Wang.

And that's why you IBB Manny to get to a 2nd tier 1st basemen.

Most overrated rivalry in sports - it has the hatred, but everyone is SO TIRED of hearing about it that it pisses them off.

New England/New York can enjoy their rivarly.... the rest of the baseball world could care less.

In the 7th, 8th or 9th inning, sure.

I'd disagree with intentionally walking Jesus in the 1st inning.

But he's Joe Torre and I'm not.

I usually would agree, but I'm watching this closely because it actually has a chance to have something to do with the Tigers this year.

This is a huge series, with a major impact on the AL East and the AL Wildcard race.

Jesus only has 7 homeruns for the Royals this year, so I wouldn't walk him either...

...and he's a sucker for the slidepiece.

Just don't try throwing a sinker to a guy that walks on H2O.

(Shit that was bad)

7th inning, 1 out, man on second, first base open

Torre lets his guy pitch to ManRam and he flies out to right on the first pitch.

It's funny how a 5 run lead can lead to you different decisions then when you have a 1 run lead. It would have been really interesting if Youkilis would have hit a 3 run bomb in the 1st, but he didn't, of course.

(p.s. Abreu is 4/4 and is hitting .400 since the Yankees acquired him, how big will that be in October? He's also got a SB today.)

Glenn, do you realize how completely obvious it is that the score of the game effects the strategy used in that game?

It would have been much better for my opinion on the subject if Youkilis would have hit a 3 run bomb in the 1st
Fixed.

I realize that's it's a much easier decision to make when you have a big lead, yes.

I guess I'm saying that it should have been an equally easy decision to not put the Red Sox in a position to have a big inning when you have a 1-0 lead in the 1st.

But again, he's Joe Torre, former manager of the year, and I'm typing on a message board. I fully realize the importance of those things.

That is the argument. You say putting Manny on base increases the chance of a big inning more than giving him a chance to hit, Torre clearly thought the opposite.

Glenn

Okay, I can see how that could be confusing.

I think you have stated the issue clearly in your post.

In general, I think putting more men on base gives more potential for a big inning, unless you are doing so to face a pitcher (NL only of course). And even then it's dangerous in the 1st inning IMO.

Youkilis is hitting behind Manny for a reason, he's hitting .291

Darth Thanatos

With little power. He's a 1st basemen that's been slugging .421 since the All-Star break. He hasn't made up for it with the average because he's under .290 after the break. As a manager, I'd take my chances with Youkilis over one of the best offensive players in the league.

Youkilis is hitting behind Manny for a reason, he's hitting .291

Or because Trot Nixon and Varitek are injured, and the other guys(Lopez, Lowell) have struggled more than Youk recently.

He has the 6 spot by default.

Bah, I guess it's just too passive (chicken shit) for me. I don't like the message that it sends to the team in the 1st inning.

"I'm afraid that Manny might hit a 2 run homer in the 1st inning and we won't be able to recover".

I'd probably be fired before the All Star break.

Also, who's to say that giving Manny that free pass in the 1st ining didn't piss him off, leading to that HR next AB? (I'm joking).

I actually agree with you. But with the pussification of baseball(and society, but that's another story), things like that will happen often, so I guess you have to see things while in their high heels.

I hate IBB, in any inning, to any player. I was sick to my stomach when Leyland IBB Joe freaking Mauer in a crucial situation(which led to a Cuddyear base clearing double). Show a little faith in your pitcher and defense.

I'd be the kind of manager that would always pitch to Barry Bonds(before 05) or a David Ortiz. May not be 100% intelligent, but it shows balls, heart, and it lets the players decide the game more.

How hot is Johnny Damon right now?

Too bad he was looking for a crapload of money because I really wanted him.
