This is basically the WCF. Dallas is more rested while the Spurs are struggling a bit.

I don't see anyone stopping Tony Parker though. Both these teams have a lot of depth, but Spurs have better playoff preformers. With all that being said, Spurs in 6.

Round 2 Schedule

1. Sun, May 7 – San Antonio 87, Dallas 85
2. Tue, May 9 – at San Antonio, 9:30 pm EDT (TNT)
3. Sat, May 13 – at Dallas, 5:00 pm EDT (ESPN)
4. Mon, May 15 – at Dallas, 9:30 pm EDT (TNT)
5.* Wed, May 17 – at San Antonio (TNT)
6.* Fri, May 19 – at Dallas (ESPN)
7.* Mon, May 22 – at San Antonio (TNT)

I'm glad.. I would have been pissed if someone took it who could have actually made it. They would have gone to over time and cut into the Pistons game.

Not that it meant anything anyways.

Since I already saw the outcome of game 1, I can't make a series prediction anymore. However I've previously said that the Spurs have the Mavericks nuts in a mason jar, and today's game only tightens the lid.

Jerry Stackhouse took the final shot. Nuff said.
Stackhouse played a fine game overall. That end shot almost made sense the way the game was going. Stack wasn't very open (Dirk deciding to pass above Bowen rather than shoot above him), and he had Ginobili on him so any move toward the hole results in Flopomatic going to the line for two.

Dallas led most of the game, despite Duncan having a great game and Dirk's shot not falling. It wasn't as fun as watching Lindsey Hunter, three point ace, decimate the Cavs, but it was fine basketball.

Damn this series will get to 7 games.

It will be interesting to see the Mavs depth at work.

Somebody forgot to tell Stack that this is Dirk's team.

It brought back a lot of old memories, though. I was telling my wife that Stack is probably one of the best "3 quarter players" in the league. Did he pass the ball once in the 4th?

I was predicting that he was going to dribble it off his foot and have it go out of bounds, but deep down I was sure that Dirk was going to take that last shot, especially with the height advantage that he had.

My wife always liked Stack, so she asked if I thought he would finish his career as a Mav, and I had to say no. The guy seems to wear out his welcome every few years, so I can see him being a Clipper or on GSW to collect his last few paychecks.

If the Mavs have any shot, Dirk needs to demand the ball in a situation like that, IMO.

I think the Spurs are going to get them in any case.

That shot didn't "almost make sense". It made absolutely no sense. He got the ball with Ginobili BEHIND him, then dribbled back to the three point line with his team down by 2 letting Manu get in front of him and pretty much broadcasting his intention not to drive and to take a 3. Manu didn't have to worry about anything other than not running into him while he smothered his 3 point heave. Not to mention that Dampier had Duncan sealed out under the basket so Stackhouse had a possible open dunk and a definite open floater/layup/3 foot jumper.

Stackhouse is the least clutch good player in the NBA.

That's only because he had to hustle to even get the ball. Ginobili was in front or alongside him virtually all the time and almost intercepted the ball, remember?

My overall point is -- There was no way that San Antonio nailing Stack on a strong move to the hole would get charged with a foul at that point in the game, especially with Ginobili prepared to flop at a moment's notice.

"almost" is the key word.

then dribbled back to the three point line with his team down by 2 letting Manu get in front of him and pretty much broadcasting his intention not to drive and to take a 3.
It looked like that was the option Avery wanted him to be.

I'd fully expect him to get fouled in the attempt, so it isn't nearly as high % as it sounds. About the only way Stack draws a foul is if going away from the basket with Ginobili clearly looking like the aggressor.

Fool
05-08-2006, 12:12 PM
What does it matter why manu was behind him? Stack had the ball with a clear route to the hole. He chose to run behind Ginobili and allow his beaten defender to get a 2nd chance. Duncan was sealed off, Ginobili beaten, SCORE THE FREE POINTS! Nope, not Stack.

And I don't understand why Stackhouse is more likely to get a call on a fade-away three pointer as he's jumping out of bounds but less likely to get one should Manu foul him from behind while he scores a lay-up/dunk down an open path to the basket.

Maybe Avery had drawn the play up with Stack as the bail-out three point option. Of course, I assume the play he drew up wasn't for Dirk to go stumbling away from the basket as he flailed the ball toward Stack nor do I think he anticipated Manu getting himself out of position going after the pass rather than guarding his man. I don't know if I'd bank on Avery backing up Stack's choice of running away from an open bucket because "its not how the play was drawn up."

It looked like they were more side-by-side, but I only saw one replay of it yesterday from one camera angle. If Ginobili was behind him, it wasn't by much because he'd been well ahead of him nearly stealing Dirk's wobbly pass.

And I don't understand why Stackhouse is more likely to get a call on a fade-away three pointer as he's jumping out of bounds but less likely to get one should Manu foul him from behind while he scores a lay-up/dunk down an open path to the basket.
Home court, last couple seconds of the game, Ginobili involved -- that's the context in which I'm saying it "almost makes sense". There's almost no way is anyone going to call a foul on the Spurs in that context, and Ginobili is close enough and smart enough to foul, so assume all shots are low-%. With that in mind, do you take that low-% shot to -win- or to -tie-? That's where it _almost_ makes sense (as long as you don't think too hard about why they didn't call a timeout).

Avery was damn lucky Stack even got the ball. It was a lousy play by Dirk (but IIRC, Dirk was being hit by Bowen).

Oh well... enough from me about this.

But the Spurs bring that all-around game that we have. Defense, some offense and slashing of MG and Parker and can grind it out.

Can the Mavs win a close one against us? If we did play them and went 7 games, I could definately see 3-4 blowouts either way and a couple of close ones.

I agree that that's the way they beat them if they do so. But I think Avery can reign in the Mavs after a game or two and if the Mavs can hold back they can come back from any deficit they dig themselves into trying to out run the Suns in the begining

Let's not be too hasty. Should Phoenix win tonight, I might take Phoenix over even Dallas for the kind of smallball I've seen. Phoenix won their last two games over Dallas in the regular season, and if they make it through a 2nd Game 7, they could be riding as high as Dallas is.

the same could've been said by the clips. Dallas is more addicted to running than any other team in the west playoffs besides the suns. if the suns can trick the clips into it, dallas shouldnt be that hard i'd think. especially in seeing the teams play each other. i almost get the feeling thast dallas is confident that they can outrun the suns or atleast run with them. i see every game in the 100's and that favors the suns IMO.

I'd agree with you if this was last year. Dallas is one of the slowest teams in the NBA now - they average just over a possession more than the Pistons. I'm not saying the ghost of Don Nelson is dead, but this is a completely different scheme they're running.

Yeah and in terms of efficiency they're not far behind in offense, either. A measley .007 (lol) points per possession.

They just showed they have the discipline to beat the Spurs, I wouldn't bet against them having enough to beat the Suns. They were doubling Duncan with their guard from the far side of the court and rotating early to the shooters and late to Parker. That takes a concentrated effort and was pretty impressive. They did get into foul trouble early and often (they aren't perfect) but if the best the Suns can hope for is to "trick" them into the same thing 4 times, thats not much to hope for.
