Bell suspended one game for takedown of Bryant

The NBA suspended Phoenix guard Raja Bell for one game on Wednesday for throwing Kobe Bryant to the floor in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

That means the Suns will be without Bell, the principal defender against Bryant, for Game 6 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Phoenix beat the Lakers 114-97 in Game 5 but Los Angeles still leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 and can eliminate the Suns with a victory. In a brief news release, the NBA said Bell was suspended for "excessive and unnecessary contact."

After the team landed in Los Angeles, Suns coach and general manager Mike D'Antoni called the suspension "consistent with what the league has been doing with other fouls of this sort.

"We'll accept it and try to suck it up and get the win, and try to get him back for Game 7," D'Antoni said in a telephone interview.

The suspension had yet to be announced when the Suns practiced earlier Wednesday before leaving for Los Angeles. After the workout, Bell repeated that throwing Bryant down was wrong but explained what led to the foul and made clear his dislike for the Lakers' star.

"I have no respect for him," Bell said. "I think he's a pompous, arrogant individual."

Bell said he had been repeatedly hit in the face by Bryant during the game.

"I got a bruised cheek here and I can barely open my jaw on this side," he said, indicating the left side of his face, "and that didn't come from nowhere, and I felt like I'd had enough of that."

Bell said it went from a game to a personal insult.

"When I get hit in the face multiple times, you've stepped across the line with me," he said. "It's not basketball anymore. It was basketball for four games, then when he hit me in the face, that was the last straw last night. It still doesn't excuse me, but that's just the way I felt about it."

At the other end of the court just before Bell threw Bryant down, the Suns guard said he complained to referee Greg Willard about getting hit in the face, and Lakers coach Phil Jackson hollered out that Bell "deserved it," adding a profanity to emphasize the point.

That's why Bell pointed to the Lakers' bench yelling "That's your foul!" after he threw Bryant down.

Bell and Bryant received a double-technicals in the second quarter. A few minutes after Bell was tossed, Bryant was thrown out of the game for his second technical for complaining about James Jones' hard foul on Kwame Brown.

The latest incident is part of a season-long series of expressions of mutual contempt between Bell and Bryant.

After Tuesday night's game, Bryant said he hoped Bell wouldn't be suspended but added that players can't afford to lose their temper in games.

"I'm not trying to go out there and elbow somebody, that's not the way I play," Bryant said. "If you get elbowed, you still have to keep your cool. I get elbowed all the time."

Bell called Bryant's comments "hypocritical."

Bell's teammate Steve Nash said the Lakers have gotten the best of the officiating in the series.

"We're playing a very heated battle and people on the outside are constantly telling guys that we've got to be more physical," Nash said. "It's tough, and he's faced a lot this series. He's done a great job on Kobe, and Kobe gets away with whatever he wants. That's kind of frustrating."

yea I just saw kobe try to play it off like he was irrelevent. But kobe was cheap shotting him just as much as him on the kobmeister. so he must've got under bryants skin too.

but raja bell has never been cool with kobe. from the first moment he was defending him in the nba finals on the dumb luck of injuries throughout the sixers. Either way the nba sucks. sexual assault hand job is a milder offense than a hard foul. wtf.

I like Raja Bell. I would like for him to join the Pistons someday. Maybe years from now, when he's old, he can fill Lindsey's role as pesky, ageing defender. I'm banking on Lindsey playing into his fifties. George Blanda style.

After listening to the reaction interviews, Raja Bell is my new favorite player (non-pistons of course...). Kobe's so fucking bitch-made.

How long does Phil Jackson get suspended for?

A special message from the NBA: You are welcome to grab a guy's nuts and yank on them in plain sight, but don't even think about touching Kobe.

Um, I really don't want to get a rep for defending Kobe but:

Other guys threw fuckers to the floor and got suspended so Bell should have seen it coming.

That said why aren't more people in Phoenix calling the league about all these elbows?

Bring them footage, show it before the game on the big screen. Do fucking something.

All this whining just makes it seem like the Suns are saying "We can't handle this".

Fuck that.

Nash should have guaranteed they would win Game 6, come back to Phoenix for G7 and Bell would get the last laugh.

But he doesn't have the balls.

i'd take him now. he's anti kobe and a solid physical player. i wanted him on the pistons way back when he was in philly though.

you turned a kobe defense into a steve nash bashing. no surprises there Pharaoh. :)

i'm sorry, but how is what he did more malicious than reggie evans? i question the NBA's legitimacy of suspending him and posey(as much as i hate the heat), yet letting evans get off with a fine. Stu Jackson was a bad coach and gm. now he's showing his shitty lack of responsible ability to be the league enforcer. this is the playoffs. Fights and thrown puncvhes should be the ONLY suspendable things on the court. the NBA is out of control.

Its no fun to hate Kobe anymore. Everyone hates him now. Before it was just a few people.

I didnt think the foul was too bad. Best Damn Sports show showed a bunch of clips of hard (much harder than Bell's) fouls in the NBA during the 80's and they were reading off the punishments and no suspensions. The NBA is being pussified. It was a good hard foul. No reason for a suspension or fines. Kobe got up. No blood, no harm.

I agree. Everything's a suspension nowadays. What is this, Golf? Series should not be so easily biased from one agressive move. If he almost hurt the guy or really endangered him or something then I wouldn't remark but my cumulative reaction to all these suspensions is "Let them fucking play!"

What Bell did was the exact definition of a "flagrant foul".

That should have been the end of the story, IMO.

Like I said, Stern and Stu are stupid. People love this. let them kill each other. No blood, no harm.

I'm sure the Laker fans are circulating that clip around, lol.

I'm equally sure that if there is another clip that actually shows an elbow connecting, that they will not pass that one around.

No clip of Raja's flagrant for me to view? What the fuck good is this place? Now I gotta go to youtube and search for it.

It should be a motha F'ing rule that you can't talk about a play without linking the clip. Thanks to matt for the Kobe clip.

I love cheap shots! What's better than a team that throws a few elbows here and there?

Yeah I forgot we despise players that do that sort of thing which is why no Pistons fan really liked Laimbeer or Mahorn when they played.

yep and they are fine until someone lays one on kobe. funny how the nba works. my point was that the lakers had been throwing just as many and that foul by raja was a flagrant. nothing more. its shitty that he got that for basically doing it to kobe.

Personally I agree. Fouls like Bells should flag rants only and not suspension-able. The problem is the precedent has been sent these playoffs that very little will be tolerated. I can see the Haslem throwing the mouth guard as a suspension but the Posey shoulder check shouldn't of been a suspension.

I don't think bell got suspended because he did it to Kobe, well maybe that's naive but it would be less obvious if they were consistent and suspended Kwame a few games ago for his take down and stand over.

Of all the sports I come to accept the NBA's officiating as less than perfect and bias. The other sports can't get away with it like the NBA can. Funny how that works.

ummm it is naive. kwame got no suspension whatsoever. the precedent says he should've but him being out would cripple the lakers. hmmm you think the nba didnt factor that in? *lol*...its a joke. busting on kobe is a serious offense. theres nothing consistent but that. if it were consistent, odom and brown might've atleast both got fines.
