I am having a little trouble getting my files onto a CD. Can I just RIP a DVD to my hard drive and then burn it onto a disc or is there some sort of codec that I need. Also I guess I made a mistake buying the 80 minute one sided disc cause no movie is that short, I guess the way to go is with the two sided disc? Any insite on the subject of burning dvdS would help.

Clarify... are you trying to copy the DVD to the HD, and then transfer it's conents to a CD?

I think DivX can do that, but I believe compression is involved (read: loss of quality)

Are you trying to make a DVD? Or just get the movie onto a regular CD?

In most cases, you'd need a DVD burner, and blank DVD disks. Blank disks usually hold up to 4.7 gigs or 120 minutes of movie

Ok, first off, to burn an actuall DVD, you need a DVD+R/RW drive. Not just a regular DVD drive. A regular DVD drive will only let you watch and RIP movies. If you want to copy them to a DVD disk, you'll need a DVD+R drive, like I have. Second, for any burning any DVD you need the special DVD burning disks. Regular disks wont work. Hope that helps. If not, I can find you some websites [smilie=404.gif]

I'm a mac guy, so iDVD (which comes standard on it) is a blast to use. I believe Windows XP has a similar pre-installed software. But keep in mind that, if you want to burn a film to watch in a DVD player, it must be burned to a format the player can understand.

Re: DVD to DVD copying of legally protected property... that's illegal (for any FBI guys sniffing around... there's a lot of "0 posts" members here). But I'm sure it can be done....

I havent tried that yet, but i'm ptetty sure you'd have to have 2 DVD drives. 1 to read the one you want to copy and the other to rip it. I'll look more into it, but i'm pretty sure you'll need another DVD drive.

No, you just need one drive. After the drive finishes reading the original, it will eject it and you can put your blank in. You do need a decent amount of hard drive space as it temporarily stores the dvd files on your computer before burning them. DVD's are encoded so you need something to decode them before you can copy them. I used to use a program called DVD Shrink, available for download here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/

I think you need Nero loaded too, but you can just install the free trial and that works, even after it expires.

That afterdawn.com site has a lot of faq's, guides and other info so if you spend some time looking around it for awhile you should be able to get started.

Be aware that Shrink doesn't work on all movies.
