The Washington Wizards can clinch the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, and what appears to be a much more favorable first-round playoff series, when they visit the Detroit Pistons to close the regular season.
Washington is in sole possession of fifth place in the East, but needs a victory or a loss by Chicago to Toronto to finish there. That would result in a first-round matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, whom the Wizards beat three of four times this season.
A loss along with victories by Chicago and Indiana on Wednesday would drop Washington to seventh and it would face an opening-round series with the Miami Heat, who have beaten the Wizards 16 straight times -- including a sweep in last year's playoffs.
The Wizards eliminated any possibility of finishing eighth by beating Milwaukee 116-103 on Tuesday in their home finale. Gilbert Arenas scored 31 of his 43 points in the second half for Washington, which outscored Milwaukee 29-13 to close the game.
"When we ended our season last year, it was in the fifth spot," Arenas said, "so we're in fifth spot until somebody takes it from us. And the only people that can take it from us is the Detroit Pistons."
Washington also can finish sixth with a loss, a Chicago victory and an Indiana loss.
The Wizards are 2-0 against the Pistons as they seek to become the only East team to sweep them this season. Washington is one of only three visiting teams to win at the Palace of Auburn Hills this season, joining Utah and New Jersey.
Detroit is concluding the most successful regular season in team history. The Pistons have won a franchise-record 64 games and gained home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
With nothing at stake down the stretch, Detroit has opted to rest its regulars over the last few games. Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton were deactivated for Monday's 113-93 loss at Milwaukee.
"We said going in the idea was to not get anybody hurt and make sure that the guys we had to play broke a sweat and didn't get too stale and give our young guys an opportunity to play in a heated situation against some top players," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said.
Detroit can post a franchise-record 38th home win, which would eclipse the record set in 1988-89.
The Pistons will meet Indiana, Chicago or Milwaukee in the first round.
