View Full Version : Is Ben a lock for a 4th DPOY?
Kstat 04-14-2006, 01:41 AM Just watching TNT's awards. They said that after ROY, the 2nd-easiest vote was DPOY.
Reggie, Charles, and Jet all said Ben deserves DPOY hands-down.
I figured Bowen would get some sympathy votes, but he was only mentioned as a distant 2nd.
A 4th DPOY would tie ben with Mutombo for the most in NBA history.
If that happens, I think it's a good bet he'd get at least one more by the end of his career, despite Ron and AK47 being hot on his heels. I think Ben's still got 3-4 more years of being Ben.
Hypothetically speaking: If Ben picks up 5 DPOY awards, is that a hall-of-fame worthy achievement?
H1Man 04-14-2006, 02:03 AM It's a tossup between Ben and Bowen for me.
I personally think that Ben has had a down year defensively (for his standards) but he just doesn't have any real competition this year to take away votes from him.
Camby and AK 47 both had great starts to the season but missed too much time. Same with Zo.
Artest, even though he missed a lot of games, might get some votes because of Sacramento's late-season turn around. Outside of that, I don't see anybody else that can even be mentioned in the DPOY argument. Yao, Marion and Kobe might get some consideration but not enough to actually affect the voting.
But I do think that the League will want to give the award to someone else other than Ben, possibly Kobe.
b-diddy 04-14-2006, 02:05 AM i think your putting the cart before the horse here, ben only has 3 dpoy's right now. i think hes a safe bet for a 4th, he'll probably get 5, but 6 is anyones guess (probably not).
dikembe also only has 4.
and i dont think he needs anymore dpoy's to get into the hall of fame.
i think he's already in (how many allstar games does he have now? 4?). another ring will help his cause more than an award at this point.
It would be nice, but I don't think his latest "tantrum" helped him out any.
Kstat 04-14-2006, 02:30 AM Bah. My reasoning was right, but my math was off a bit.
Edited. Same question stands.
BTW I don't think Mutombo will get in. And right now its hard to say Ben's more deserving than Deke, since Deke has more imprssive numbers, and over a much longer period of time.
I think 5 DPOYs (plus 2+ rings) would give Ben the edge he needs to get over the hump.
And no, if Ben retired today, he would not be in the hall of fame. I don't even think he'd be considered. He needs a much bigger resume.

Why not. He has a ring, all-star games, and atleast 3 dpoy

One ring counts, but not for THAT much.....
lol if 4 all-star games were enough to make the hall of fame, it would be full by now....
Mutombo has without question a better resume than Ben Wallace right now. He dwarfs ben in every category. All Ben has on him is one ring, and that isnt enough. Is Mutombo HOF material? I dont think so.
IMO Ben has to build a better resume than Mutombo to get HOF consideration, and he's not there yet. He has no chance of getting into the hall on his statistics, so he's going to have to build up so many DPOYs and championships that the HOF wont have a choice.
Hermy 04-14-2006, 06:56 AM 1. AK will still get some votes even with time missed, and yeah the NBA wants to give it to someone else (bowen), but I still predict he gets it, he's just been everywhere this year. I'll say it again, I thought this was his best defensive season. Less stats, better team defender, and a better leader until that shit last week.
2. I think Deke is a HOFer, he did everything but score and get the title, though deserving guys get the shaft in the NBA so he's borderline I guess.
3. Ben is not. Career too short, though if we get a couple more titles he'll be the most beloved Detroit sports figure......ever?

It's still better than not having anything at all.
I still think Ben still has a shot at the HOF
I don't think he's a lock. If he won it this year, wouldn't this be the worst defensive stats he's every had while winning it? (Just like last year)

By quite a bit.
Anthony 04-14-2006, 11:10 AM Another reason why Ben's numbers might be down a bit, is because, well, he is the 3 time DPOY. Teams have figured out that they cant go into the lane when he's there unless they want to see their shit get swatted down I-75. His rebounding numbers are down because he dosnt play next to Memo or Cliff Robbinson any more. Sheed, while he dosnt grab as much as he could, is a massive upgrade over both of those guys. Also, on almost every play, Ben is held, shoved, bumped, just about anything anyone can do to keep him off the boards
He's still one of the very very few people in the NBA that can take a game over with out scoring. There are no stats for how many times he changes a shot. There are no stats for all the little things he does.
This man basicly guards 5 guys on one play

This man basicly guards 5 guys on one playExcellent fuckin post. I agree 100%.
i freaking love those plays when Ben goes into "i'm-gonna-check-your-whole-damn-team-with-my-super-powers" mode. he starts with a one man full court press on their PG, rotates on every man along the perimeter, and ends up w/ a steal, block, or rebound.
crap like that reminds me why he's a DPOY candidate every year.
fuck Artest.
Hermy 04-14-2006, 11:51 AM yup, great post Anthony. When Ben played for Prick all he had to do was stand near the hoop and attack. LB incorporated more switching on P&Rs especially after he got Sheed to help guard the tin (and fit into the system where you have 2 of the 5 best bigs in the league at containing guards on the perimeter). Now flip has taken it another step and allows the situation to dictate the defense, sometimes leaving Ben to guard a shooter who doesn't even have the ball. Aside from some Richard Jefferson dunks there isn't a better inside outside guy on his own end (KG and AK are both tough, but no way AK goes on shaq, and KG isn't as intimidating on shots).
