Brown falls ill during game, leaves arena on stretcher

New York Knicks coach Larry Brown was to be hospitalized overnight after becoming ill in the third quarter of Thursday night's game against the Cavaliers.

The 65-year-old Brown, whose had health issues in recent years, was taken from Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher following New York's 91-87 loss. He appeared alert and was sitting upright with oxygen tubes in his nose as he was wheeled out to an emergency vehicle.

Brown didn't say anything while being taken to an undisclosed hospital.

Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said Brown was examined by Cavaliers team doctors and a Knicks physician after going to the locker room. Brown's vital signs were "stable," but because his symptoms came on so quickly, doctors felt it was best that he go to the hospital for further tests and observation.

Supranowitz said Brown had an upset stomach.

"All Larry told me to tell you was that, 'I'm fine,'" Supranowitz said.

As Brown was being attended to by medical staff in a room down the hallway from the Knicks locker room, assistant coach Herb Williams and other staff members went in to check on him. Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry and coach Mike Brown also stopped by.

Brown has had a tumultuous first season with the Knicks. He has publicly criticized his players and squabbled with star guard Stephon Marbury. The injuries have piled up as high as the losses for the Knicks, who dropped to 22-56 after blowing a nine-point fourth quarter lead to the Cavaliers.

In February, Brown was taken to a Memphis hospital with chest pains but didn't miss any games.

While coaching the Detroit Pistons last season, Brown missed 17 games after having a hip replaced. That operation led to a bladder problem that required surgery in November. Brown needs more surgery for the bladder problem, but he's putting that off until after the season.

probably wrongfully, i always had larry's back.

but i always thought it was in bad taste when people questioned his health and suggesting it was all a ploy.

dude's mid 60's, just had a fairly serious surgery, and was living a lifestyle thats extremely demanding on the body. the fact that he got so much criticism for weighing his decision, and doing multiple mayo clinic stays was really low class.

and im not calling out posters on this one, there was a ton of media (especially local) pulling this BS. i think it just demonstrates that sports journalists can usually be described as the scum of the earth.

Oh I had no doubt he was in bad health.

However, wether you believed it or not, brining back larry again was a bad idea EITHER way.

You can't afford to have an injury-prone head coach. That's one guy you just cant afford to lose, because it's not as if you can sign a quality backup head coach...

Take poppovich off SA or Avery off Dallas. They suddenly become less formidable.

Best of luck to Larry. He needs to retire, or at the very least coach on a less demanding level, like college or hughschool.

I never understood the venom towards the old man here.

Maybe it's time for him to head off to Florida with his hot wife?

Hope that he recovers alright.

Okay Taymelo, go ahead with your new "LB's exit strategy" thread you heartless prick. lol

Twice this season the man has been rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, from the arena during or prior to a game, with a tummy ache.

OK, I'll bite.

Remember, these hospitalizations apparently have nothing to do with his urinary problem, are not heart related, and appear to be nothing more than indigestion.

So, how many 65 year old MEN do you know that call 911 and get rushed to the hospital, via ambulance, from the arena, twice in a couple of months, because of a tummy ache?

Damn, I am a prick.

Get well, LB. [smilie=angel.gif]

I agree with Taymelo. This should go in the Larry's exit strategy thread.

Larry Simpson get well , sorry your acid reflux is preventing you from being victim 65 on Sunday

I can't believe that LB is having health issues when talks of a buyout are circulating. For a guy who is above suspicion I can't believe all the aspersions and conspiracies being floated about.

I can't believe the diagnosis was an upset stomach two days ago - - - - and he's STILL not back to coaching the team.

It might as well have been heart disease, for the amount of time he's taking away from the team to "cure" indigestion.

NEW YORK -- Larry Brown did not travel to Detroit on Saturday and will not coach the Knicks on Sunday when they play the Pistons.

Brown was hospitalized Thursday night in Cleveland with a stomach ailment after becoming ill during the Knicks' 91-87 loss to the Cavaliers. He returned home Friday, but assistant coach Herb Williams ran the team in a 97-80 loss to Milwaukee.

Brown will miss a chance to coach in Detroit, where he spent the two previous seasons, winning a title in 2004, before joining the Knicks last summer. He got a mixed reception when the Knicks played at the Palace of Auburn Hills in December.

It is not known if Brown will coach the final two games of the regular season, Monday at home against Charlotte or at New Jersey on Wednesday. The Knicks are 22-57, the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

The 65-year-old Brown missed a game for the first time this season Friday. He also was hospitalized in Memphis in February because of a pain in his chest, but returned before the next game.

While coaching the Pistons last season, he missed 17 games after having a hip replaced. That operation led to a bladder problem that required surgery in November. Brown needs more surgery for the bladder problem, but he's putting that off until after the season.

Guess not.

"He's going to take it easy and get some rest this weekend," Glass said. "He's doing fine. It's well-documented that he has acid reflux. He was diagnosed with it many years ago. He just wanted to get it checked out.

Its quotes like that from his snake oil saleseman... err... agent... that make me think he may really be faking it.

Every time his agent gets all defensive and feels the need to prove something, it means he's being sneaky.

Its the same shit Glass was pulling during buyout negotiations with Mr. and Joe D.

To me, saying "its well documented" is like starting off an explanation or excuse by saying "I'm not lying, I swear".

The Knicks are giving half of NY acid reflux, so I believe it.

The Knicks have NOTHING to look forward to. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, that they even lost their first round pick to the Bulls for the Cardiac Curry deal.

So they don't anything to look forward to next year, either.

Poor LB. He never asked for this.

Well, actually he did.

PISTONS CORNER: Ex-team has sympathy for Brown

BY KRISTA LATHAM
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

April 17, 2006

The Pistons have treated their severed relationship with former coach Larry Brown with grace and respect all season. Whenever asked about Brown, they've said they loved him. When they played his new team, the Knicks, in the first three meetings, they shook Brown's hand before tip-off.

On Sunday, that graciousness was evident even with Brown somewhere on the East Coast as he recovers from an acid reflux flare-up from last week.

"You never want to see someone ill, especially dealing with all the stuff that he's been dealing with," guard Lindsey Hunter said. "I feel bad for him."

The Pistons experienced all sorts of inopportune health issues with Brown last season. He missed 17 games due to a hip replacement surgery and ensuing bladder problems. His departure from Detroit was inherently connected to his health problems and the manner in which he dealt with them.

Now, health problems strike again, right as the Knicks have bottomed out in a turbulently awful season. If the Pistons wanted to raise their eyebrows -- as the New York media has done -- no one would question them.

But the Pistons still give Brown the benefit of their doubt.

"Those are just theories, I guess," Hunter said. "Nobody knows. You never want to see someone go through what he's been going through. If it was me, I know I'd be at home."

But Hunter said he couldn't imagine a scenario in which Brown would miss a game if he were well enough to coach.

"No way," Hunter said. "He came to our games (after the surgery) and he had the big chair out there. If he could do it, he would do it."

Ben Wallace was asked if he felt bad for Brown. "For him or his team?" he said. "I wish that everybody would get healthy and be where they want to be and be able to do their jobs. I am concerned about his health, but as for his team, I don't have no sympathy."
