Wings coach Mike Babcock spent the previous day at the Tigers' home opener, where his boss, Marian Ilitch, casually mentioned that she already has four Presidents' trophies.
The Red Wings delivered the fifth in 11 seasons Tuesday after downing the desperate Oilers, 2-0, before an appreciative crowd at Joe Louis Arena. The victory secured the Wings the most points in the regular season and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
But finishing first in the regular season doesn't necessarily translate into playoff success (only six teams since the award was introduced in 1985-86 have gone on to win the Stanley Cup), and the Wings know that's when they'll ultimately be judged.
"It's been a good year for our team," Manny Legace said, "but the big silver mug, weighs about 38 pounds, that's the key one. That's the ultimate goal. Presidents' trophies are nice, but the ultimate goal is the big mug."
However....when was the last time that we had the very best team in hockey and the very best team in basketball? 2006 has been a very good year so far (knock on wood).
