View Full Version : The Greatest Video Game of All Time

Ok, I know, there are so many and it's super tough to choose, but of all the games you've played in your lifetime, in your opinion, what is the greatest video game of all time? This really had me thinking, do I go with the nostalgia and an old school NES game, or a nu skool blow you away game? [smilie=shrug smile: Tough call, but in the end, I had to go nu skool.

RESIDENT EVIL 4
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002A6CQ4.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg http://img.gamekult.com/photos/00/00/41/90/ME0000419006_2.jpg

This game had it all. Innovative and smooth gameplay, dreamy graphics, edge of your seat action, and not to mention the trademark of the Resident Evil franchise, scaring the crap out of you everytime you play. Only RE games have that added element of where you want to play because it's so amazing, but you don't because you don't want to be shook. This game was hot from the get-go and it only got better as the game went on. The high speed train track trolley car shootout anyone? Damn. This game is a must play for everyone. Originally made for the Gamecube, but is now available (with some special features) on the PS2.

The single-player mode is severely under-rated, even though the ending was kind of disappointing. The AI is vastly improved from the original and the game just operates so smoothly for a console FPS. The graphics looks amazing and the level of detail is so amazing that you can actually read the markings on certain guns & ammo. [smilie=cool4.gif]

And don't even get me started on the multiplayer.

I got respect for all the console gamers but I gotta represent the PC online gamers here.

If you played the Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake series on the PC, you should ALREADY KNOW this game practically revolutionized the first person shooter. Console gamers may have fallen in love with Goldeneye and now Halo, but this game raised the bar and set the standard for whatever present day FPS you line it up to.

The game plays like a movie easily, running on the heavily modified Quake 2 engine so familarity with the older games and you're into it. It was Game of the Year in 99 I believe and its effects live on.

It might be better known to you for its mods:

Team Fortress Classic
Counter-Strike
Day of Defeat
Natural Selection

All of which are noteable games for professional cyber athletes.

Also spawned a sequel, the most anticipated PC game of all time, Half-Life 2, also showing promise for mod teams for more game development.

http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/img/apps/hl2/productHeader_HL2.jpg

I spent about a good 5-6 years playing Half-Life and it's many mod games and only reccently I've been able to chill out from it. It'll pull me back one of these days. The single player is great, added with the online multiplayer value and it's priceless.

For me, it was Final Fantasy X. I was able to play virtually non-stop for a larger part of the game, and that was an experience.

I really need to experience some first-person shooters. For some reason I've just never been into them. I rented Halo and wasn't really blown away. But yesterday I popped in a demo of Black and I was really feeling it. I think I'm more into the realistic/ war FPS games rather than the sci-fi ones like Halo and Half life. What realistic FPS would you guys recommend that I start with? I have a 360, a PS2, and a solid PC. I do prefer console games though. Any recommendations?

Good call e. I think I put in over 120+ hours in on that game. I had to go around and find all of the summon spells for Yuna and the enchanted weapons. Not to mention wasting a ton of time playing blitzball.

CoD2 was pretty fun -- that's the only FPS I've played for the 360.

Anything Metal Gear. Some of the smartest stories going in gaming with a terrific set of Motifs and ideas. That metal gear solid really gave you something entertaining. I still love the battle with psycho mantis and trying to figure out what the fuck he was doing to get over with the smoke and mirrors psychic bs he was pulling. And of course his classic line "If you question my abilities, put your controller on the floor!" LOL@dual shock. [smilie=applause.gi:

Metal Gear Solid had some of the most inventive gameplay elements of all time. I did love that fight vs. Mantis. I got worked over like 8 times, then once I realized if you plugged in the #2 controller and used that, it was cake.

I also remember having to "look at the back of the CD case" to find Meryl's frequency. I don't know how long I walked around (in the game) looking for a damn CD case! [smilie=banghead.gi: Then I looked on the back of the case for the game...and there it was. Awesome! [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

LOL @ Killer Instinct.

Didn't that game have like insane long combos?

I was the shit at Street Fighter. Used to own chumps at the local 7-11. I could sit there for an hour or two on like 50 cents if there were enough people to challange me so I didn't just beat the game. One guy was even a regular and left for a while and developed his game at a different location so he could come back and beat me. I was a defensive Ryu player, he came back as an offensive Vega guy and he rocked me for about $2 one day (25 cent games). The next time I saw him I had found a way to disrupt his style and shortly after I didn't see him again. Then the 7-11 got robbed and they shut is down.

I suck at fighting games, more or less -- so SF2 and KI are nowhere on my list, although I did play them quite a bit.

As for the Halo-freaks: It's nowhere near the greatest game ever, although I disagree about it being "just another FPS" based on its perfect controls alone. I never once remember having a problem with controls on that game, and everything was so responsive it was unbelievable. Aside from that, though, the graphics and storyline aren't on top.

FF goes without saying.
I never liked Eathbound (or its huge box).

I like IoG and its real earth connections (the sand track designs and all that).
I own Secret of Mana, it was very fun and I really liked its lightheartedness.
Never tried any of the "Tales" series.
Breath of Fire was the shit.

I came onto the RPG scene way late, and I'm actually pretty pissed about it. [smilie=angryfire.g: Growing up, I played mostly sports games (Tecmo Bowl and Super Bowl, Punch-Out, Exctitebike, NBA Live, etc), and I thought that RPGs were for nerds. Then one day, my buddy rented and brought over Super Mario RPG and I didn't give it back to him. I was hooked. My next RPG I tackled was Breath of Fire II I think it was called. Correct me if I'm wrong. Loved it! Then I put about 150 hours into FF7, about 120 into FFX, and I was completely addicted to FFXI. Now, I'm rolling with Oblivion on the 360 and it's one of the best games I've ever played.

Like I said, I'm pissed because I missed some classic RPGs like the Chrono series, the early Final Fantasy games, and the others you guys have mentioned. I know I could go back and play them now, but I just don't see my self doing that in my free time with an Xbox 360 sitting on top of my TV.

I posted this in another thread and thought it would make for a cool topic. Here are my Top Video Games of All Time. I'm sure I forgot some in there, in particular I know I forgot some legendary favorite NES and PS1 games. But, I gave it a shot. Keep in mind, some sequels were better than the originals, but my list goes for the impact they made on me when they came out. For example: Vice City surpassed Liberty City, but when LC dropped, I'd never seen anything like it. Therefore, it makes the all time list for the impact it made in its era.

In no particular order, I go

Grand Theft Auto 3 (ps2)
Onimusha (ps2)
Hitman: Contracts (ps2) -I'll let you know if bloodmoney takes over
NBA Live 95 (Sega Genesis)
Ghost Recon (XBox 360)

Honorable Mention:
NCAA Football 2004 (ps2) and NCAA Football 99 (ps)
Dungeons and Dragons (Intellivision)
Road Rash (Genesis)
SSX (ps2)
Double Dragon (NES)
Coach K Basketball (Genesis)

The fact that Tecmo Super Bowl isn't getting any mention is horrible. Every game made this year will have 3,000 times better graphics, 10-30 times more plays, and far more user controls. But deep down anyone that's ever played Super Bowl wishes they have a working machine to play a season right now.
Upon finishing a season there, you would most likely put Blades of Steel in and enjoy that masterpiece as well.

Yes Tecmo Super Bowl was the truth and then some as were its sequels. No game has ever matched it in presentation. I liked the overdramatic elements they added to winning the super bowl and playoff games. I wish madden would do that.

Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 make my list.

Socom 2 and 3(with 4 possibly coming out this winter)
Chrono Trigger
Final fantasy 7 and 10
Secret of Mana
Super Mario World
Zelda : link to the past
Resident Evil 2
double dribble
arch rivals
Street fighter 2
Campcom vs SNK
pro wrestling on nitendo
Batman:the return of joker
nba jam
tekken
campcom vs marvel
Snatchers for Sega CD
Zone of Enders 2
Xenosaga 1
teenage mutant ninja turtles the arcade game
jackie chan arcade game(hard to find these days, but fun)

after SNES, i pretty much fell out of the loop w/ console games. i played some PC games, but not too many. my all time favorite games:

The Bard's Tale I, II, & III (on my apple IIe): played this w/ a friend for hours on end. it was my first RPG and i was hooked.

Super Mario Bros. series: i can remember on the playground in elementary school when each release was big news, lol. i remember being one of the first kids in my neighborhood getting a NES and all my friends coming over to play.

Zelda series: all time favorites. the adventure genre was a favorite of mine. like SMB, every new release was big news in my life, lol.

NCAA Basketball (SNES): loved the 3D in this game. remember playing Kenny Anderson from G-Tech and tearing it up, lol. it was the second sports game loved. first was double dribble on NES (like gutz mentioned). i remember there used to be this spot on the floor that you could make like 80% of your jumpers in double dribble.

Street Fighter 2: the game that caused my SNES console to get so hot, i had to turn it off to cool down. i remember playing the game w/ my friends for hours when i first got the game. i knew people who were so disgustingly good at the game, it was a challenge just to get a hit in.

Warcraft 2 & 3: these were the last games i really got into. it was the first online game i played w/ some buddies who went out of state for college.

The fact that Tecmo Super Bowl isn't getting any mention is horrible. Every game made this year will have 3,000 times better graphics, 10-30 times more plays, and far more user controls. But deep down anyone that's ever played Super Bowl wishes they have a working machine to play a season right now.

Find the emulator for your system, download it, unzip it to any location, then under the roms section, find your system, find your game, download it, open up the emulator and you can play the game :)

Wow, I knew I would miss a HUGE one for those of you that looked at my all time list a page back.

GOD OF WAR! If this one isn't in my Top 5, then the Freanking God of War himself has his big ass sword out and he's trying to slash his way into the Top 5 as we speak.

Muhme- NCAA 07? WOW!!!! Dude, maybe you enjoy playing the game. I can repect that. But, anytime somebody can make a list of 32 things wrong with a game, it shouldn't even be mentioned. You can cut out half of the 32 you don't agree with and you still have tons of things wrong. If a Football game has clock errors, it can't be mentioned. Even the sega fball games got that right.

Thanks to the emulator I finally was able to beat the fucking game. I'm ADD. I could never sit there long enough to finish the game. I could save it with the emulator.
