View Full Version : Fixing my Xbox
Pharaoh 04-07-2006, 10:48 AM OK, Moodini - time to repay me.
My Xbox is fucked. I'm playing the fucking lottery every time I put a disc in it. Sometimes the machine will work first go, sometimes on the second, sometimes not at all.
WTF?
It can't read the disc, ANY disc, even a brand new DVD. Oh wait - it just did. No, there it goes again.
FUCK!
How do I go about fixing this?
Sending it to Microsoft takes forever and it's a pain.
I haven't got it chipped or anything, just a regular Xbox. And because the 360 is so expensive I'm not gonna dump it for the new one.
PLUS, I've got all my NBA Live shit saved on the hard drive and no memory card, so dumping the machine for a new one kills my Dynasty and all my created players and new rosters.
WTF can I do (short of saying "fuck it" and buying another xbox?)
Black Dynamite 04-07-2006, 01:23 PM You try a Lens cleaner?

Moodini31 04-07-2006, 02:11 PM Pharaoh,
I'll see what I can do for ya. I wouldn't try a lens cleaner, I've had some bad experiences with those. I bought one for my PS1 and it didn't do jack shit. I'd recommend 2 things. I had an original Xbox and it had that whack Thompson CD drive. After a while, it failed, so I sent it back to Microsoft and it came back working good as new. It worked for about 3 months, then failed again. I think it was due to the CD drive, not Microsoft fixing it good. So I would send it back, it really didn't take that long. 2 weeks tops. At worst, you'll get 3 more months out of it, and by then it'll definitely be time to get a 360 and just about time for the PS3.
Or, if you want to stick with the original Xbox, I think you can buy a memory card, transfer your stuff onto there and get a new Xbox for dirt cheap.
My two cents.
Anthony 04-07-2006, 02:36 PM Dont all systems go to the shitters after a while?
Black Dynamite 04-07-2006, 03:35 PM Dont all systems go to the shitters after a while?
no, Actually its that some are duds. Some arent. My Ps2 is a first generation Ps2 and it still works great. But my sisters one broke after 6 months. My brothers first xbox broke after a week. The replacement one worked with no issues after that.
As far as the lens thing on PS1. I know what you're talking about. But that was different. They make lens cleaners specifically for gaming. They didnt before. But if he doesnt wanna take that gamble. Buy those air cans used for computer dust and give your xbox an air cleaning if possible.
Anthony 04-07-2006, 03:43 PM Really? Because I take care of my systems very good, but they always seem to crap out after two years or so. My PS1 still works for most games. Once in a while it'll have its issues. My Xbox was acting funny for a while, but then it just stopped. Oh well.

Maybe i've just been plain old fortunate. I hope my string of blessed luck continues [smilie=artist.gif]

Actually, that's not recomended. Check the link I posted.

Yeah, I had a first generation PS2, and never had a single problem... wait, take that back, sent it in once for a disc read error on movies, fixed free of charge... But on mine compared to most, in my five years with it, I had a very minor amount of problems. Never had problems with my luck, and my 360's still holding up in the couple months I've had it. Some are peaches, some are lemons, I guess...

I see. Damn so i'm really luck to have mines working so long. I've done so much unrecommended shit to it. [smilie=angel.gif]
H1Man 04-07-2006, 07:46 PM If you don't want to send in your XBox to MS and none of these suggestions work, you could try replacing the DVD drive yourself.
Cross 04-08-2006, 06:02 AM PLUS, I've got all my NBA Live shit saved on the hard drive and no memory card, so dumping the machine for a new one kills my Dynasty and all my created players and new rosters.
That hurts.
DrRay11 04-08-2006, 08:44 AM I'd probably just suck it up and ship it to MS if I were you... I guess it depends on the price you're willing to pay.

I dont think the HD would be damaged. The files would still be there.
If your really worried about it, just run out and grab a memory card real quick and transfer your files.
Pharaoh 04-13-2006, 11:21 AM Well, I appreciate all the answers, guys but it seems it wasn't worth it.
We just moved and I dropped the fucking thing!
Goodbye Xbox.
So now I'm gonna wait and get a 360 when they come down in price.
Here in Oz a quality 360 package costs $1000.
That's around $1500 US!
What a fucking joke.
DrRay11 04-13-2006, 11:31 AM That price is nasty, Pharaoh. Flat out nasty. I paid no more than MSRP of 400 USD for the premium system.
Definitely hang in there until the price drops.
Pharaoh 04-13-2006, 12:19 PM Imagine my life:
No free NBA coverage
Work more than 50 hours per week, with start times all over the place
All the good shit costs a fortune
Fuck this!
If it wasn't Easter I'd go postal, but since it is I'll get drunk instead
Black Dynamite 04-13-2006, 12:21 PM buy it online in american currency.
Anthony 04-13-2006, 12:21 PM Wow, that sucks man.
Anthony 04-13-2006, 12:22 PM buy it online in american currency.
Thats what I was going to say.
Pharaoh 04-13-2006, 12:33 PM good idea
how much is a quality 360 package?
E-ray said $400 MSRP.
What is MSRP?
Manufacture's suggested retail price.
What region coding does Oz get? NTSC?
Moodini31 04-13-2006, 01:15 PM Where exactly is Oz? Are you hanging with prisoners or Dorothy?
Moodini31 04-13-2006, 10:07 PM OK, gotcha. But paying $1000 for a 360 is reeediculous. You can get the premium package for $400, a game for $60, and another wireless controller for $50, and they're becoming more readily available. So, you should be able to be up and running for about 500 bucks, which isn't that bad for today's standards.
WTFchris 04-13-2006, 11:29 PM wow, you guys are unlucky. I've never had any problems with any of my systems (except the crap where you had to blow on nintendo games). I've had Atari 2600, Atari 5800, Nintendo, SNES, N64, PS1 and Xbox and nothing wrong with any of them. I hope I keep it that way.
Pharaoh 04-15-2006, 01:06 AM We run the PAL system here so getting a 360 from the US wouldn't help me.
I'm just gonna have to wait until they get cheaper because there is no way I'm paying $1000 for a fucking system
DrRay11 04-15-2006, 01:14 AM Search "xbox 360 premium pal" on ebay. See what comes up.
a bit off the topic but if you guys want your systems to last longer, the biggest issue any of my friends have had, is my friends who watch movies (dvd of course) on their xbox/ps2. its advertised that they do it, and of course they do, but the lasers arent built for that like a dvd player is. the difference being that with a game the laser is only on for short loading bursts where with a movie its on for an hour or two straight. marketing ploy if you ask me... but either way i dont know anyone who consistently used a game system for movies and had the drive last for more than six months or so.
just my two cents.
Pharaoh 04-15-2006, 12:36 PM My buddy uses his xbox for movies and it's starting to fuck up all the time.
I told him to get a dvd player, but he's a cheap bastard and didn't listen.
I never (ok, maybe once or twice) used my xbox for dvds.
DrRay11 04-15-2006, 03:19 PM My local Wal-Mart has an abundance of 360's. Too bad you're PAL, Pharaoh, or I'd hook you up.
