View Full Version : South Park v. Family Guy
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 05:48 PM Debate? Anyone?
Now, I'm one who doesn't watch much Family Guy (to be honest, I don't even know when/where it's on). However, the couple episodes I've watched were just too random and didn't have any point for my tastes. Again, I've not watched much so I can't be too much against it. South Park, on the other hand, is funnier to me for one reason or another. and has seemed to get more laughs out of me. Which do you prefer?
Family Guy, hands down, for me.
i used to watch southpark way back when, but i kind of got tired of it. futurama is a severely underrated funny cartoon, too.
Black Dynamite 04-06-2006, 06:06 PM Family Guy, hands down, for me.

agreed. my order is Simpsons, futurama, family guy, south park, the critic, drawn together, robot chicken, and the tick.
Darth Thanatos 04-06-2006, 06:13 PM The Simpsons > Family Guy > South Park > The Boondocks > Futurama
The rest suck.
Vinny 04-06-2006, 06:33 PM South Park continuously cracks me up, even in repeated watchings. Family Guy I always love the episodes the first time I see them, but in re-runs they just kind of bore me.
Pharaoh 04-07-2006, 11:11 AM Family Guy for me.
South Park used to make me laugh but as I get older it gets worse (or so it seems)
Black Dynamite 04-07-2006, 11:27 AM Man i just saw a south park episode that was pretty fucking weak. The irony is that it was dissing Family guy. But thats my gripe with south park. They get so caught up into trying to attack someone or push their agendas, that they lose some of the great humor that made them hot in the first place. Now they just try to fill their niche as the show that attacks people. Instead of making great hilarious episodes.
Older south park >>>>>>South park park now.
Anthony 04-07-2006, 12:42 PM South Park. Family guy is ok. But south park stays on topic for the most part is funny though out the entire thing. Family guy is like 5 minutes plot, 10 of "like the time I..." jokes, and the rest, and the other 15 minutes are just build up to either one of those. The Simpsons are still funnier than Family Guy.
SDPistonfan 04-07-2006, 07:29 PM Nothing comes close to the Simpsons in its prime. Nothing.
Both of these shows were solid, but have been rapidly declining for some time.

Man Simpsons today has declined all that much to me. It still is the best animated show running.
But I'm still saying south park hit a weak ass week with their latest episode. boring as fuck it was says Yoda.

It was more a shot at Comedy Central, who refused to replay the "Trapped in the Closet" episode that parodied Scientology because Tom Cruise threatened to not promote Mission Impossible 3 if they did.
The irony is that South Park wasn't really making fun of Family Guy - Family Guy is exactly like that.
Koolaid 04-07-2006, 09:51 PM south park > Family guy.
it isn't even close.
Family guy is attractive to high-on's with no attention span. If you're fried silly you can still follow it. My friends love family guy, they're all high as fuck though.
South park is more comedic, more shocking and more socially observant. It's also been around alot longer. Family guy will never have the staying power that south park has. Even in recent episodes, The trapped in the closet episode and the killing of chef gave people something to talk about and something to laugh about. I can't say that i've seen an episode of family guy with any real substance, and i've seen quite a few of them.
I agree the last episode of south park spoofing family guy wasn't that good though. I think episode 2 of the series will have to be alot better, other wise they wouldn't have went through with it.
the wrath of diddy 04-08-2006, 01:43 AM The last South Park episode spoofed more things than Family guy this week.
1. They took a shot a Comedy Central for pussing out and pulling two of last season's eps (the one about Scientology and the Bloody Mary one).
2. They mocked themselves. 2-3 years ago they had an episode which featured the Prophet Mohammed who was part of the Super Best Friends (along with Jesus and Seaman).
3. They took shots at Faux News and the Bush administration.
4. They took a shot at Muslims.
5. They took a shot at American's reactions to Muslims
They mocked some other things too but I'm too drunk to remember exactly what. South Park has proven through out the years that they can out funny Family Guy on so many levels. It's not even close. The Simpsons is the only thing that comes anywhere close to the layers of comedy the SP has put out there. Family Guy is a distant 3rd when compared to those two shows.

I remember that. how could there be no reaction to that back then? I completely forgot about that episode. where were the riots and fires?

Hmm ok you just made my point why they arent as funny anymore. Too much time spent mocking vs not enough time spent writing something funny. The last few posts are explainations on who they mocked. I dont give a shit who the fuck they mock. If the shit wasnt funny who cares. People seemed obsessed with that part of the show. And that to me is what is making it one dimensional as of late. Its "who can we mock?" every week instead of "whats funny".
I'm sorry but the truth is their episodes have been hit and miss as of late. nothing worthy of being something i'd try to catch up on. I'd rather watch an old as shit episode of futurama over that last south park episode.
And one step further, neither family guy or south park is touching the simpsons. Its not close IMO. Family guy gets by on using techniques that the simpsons started, evolved, and moved on past years ago. And South Park is too inconsistent.
Artis Gilmore 04-08-2006, 09:13 AM South Park>>>>>>>Family Guy.
South Park can own the shit out of anything, and never run out of ideas as did Famiy Guy and the Simpsons. But southpark is just always hilarous. There's like 4 episodes where there wasn't any thing funny.
Though the Simpsons in its prime could make a case, but the simpsons now suck.

south park blind homerism Stevey Boy. if they opened the show up standing in the street for the whole episode, you'd still say its the greatest. [smilie=arnold.gif]
but if you enjoy it on a consistent still, more power to you. i can't say i feel the same. especially not that last episode.
Anthony 04-08-2006, 11:09 AM I still find the simpsons funnier than all the shows on tv.

Someone is attacked in nearly all aspects of comedy, From a pie in the face on down. Making fun of someone is funny. I bet if you looked for that in other shows you'd see that they do the same thing as well.

I do and no they do "comedy". Mocking is only one form. And its not funny automatically as you're suggesting. You cant say "i'mma mock something every week and it'll be funny because i mocked them". Thats some low level thinking right there. SNL is built on mocking people via sketches. Doesn't make every episode funny does it?

SNL isn't built on mocking people, they had alot of sketches that reflected nothing whatsoever like Landsharks, Coneheads and all the way up to Mr.peepers.
Dave Chappelle is built on mocking people though, he characterized everything from nelson mandela to the KKK. That's why him and South Park get so much credit. They make socially relevent comedy, and it's groundbreaking in terms of speech and hilarious simultaneously.

dave chapelle is built on humor. And i was referring to SNL today. Almost all sketch shows have mocking sketches now.
But you're just missing the point like shaq at the FT line. Mocking people doesnt make you automatically funny. you seem to think so though. South park has had some wack episodes. i dont care who they mock if its not funny. And that episode last week was not funny. LOL@people trynna tell me its funny because of who it made fun of.
Koolaid 04-08-2006, 10:22 PM dave chapelle is built on humor. And i was referring to SNL today. Almost all sketch shows have mocking sketches now.
you still watch SNL?
all sketch shows have 'mocking' sketches. all shows have 'mocking' period. Why? Because if you aren't making fun of something, then you are making fun of nothing and if you make fun of nothing you're telling a joke that no one is going to be able to get.
But you're just missing the point like shaq at the FT line. Mocking people doesnt make you automatically funny. you seem to think so though. Nobody said that episode was hilarious. It wasn't that funny, and I already said that too.
My point is that comedy is a harsh world of bullys and victims. Jokes are at their best when they are used like weapons and it's always been that way. So for you to say that all south park is doing now is mocking people is stupid because of that. All comedy is making fun of something, so in essence you're bitching about them doing their job accordingly.
Black Dynamite 04-08-2006, 10:48 PM no i said its its not funny like it was and that all they do is mock people instead of trying to get across some good humor in the process. one dimesional and falling off. its not my fault you thought otherwise. Mock anybody you want. but if its not funny who gives a shit.
Koolaid 04-08-2006, 11:31 PM its not my fault you thought otherwise.
I'm sick of people saying this. I've said things like this too, but I'm going to slam this sentence singularly before I even get to the real post.
It IS YOUR fault. The whole reason you're typing into a keyboard is to display text on the internet, if the text you type doesn't get the point you were trying to make across then YOU fucked up. The reader didn't fuck up, even if he/she is a brain-dead idiot, you fucked up by typing in a message that failed to reach the intended recipient mentally. Learn to communicate with morons, recognize that you're a moron or shut the fuck up because otherwise you're just talking to yourself.

satrical comedy can always be labeled as mocking, if it isn't mocking something then it's a failed attempt at humor. You can say that they aren't funny, and judging by your tastes that i've read on here i'd agree with you. The problem is you holding the 'mocking' thing as a way shutting down the humor, when in actuality the mocking of the people is what gives value to the jokes and makes them truly funny instead of stupid and irrelevent.

1.) no its not my fault. And that was a lame to hell and back excuse for say its my fault that you keep fucking up on interpreting what i posted.
2.) Ironic that you did it again right after. I never said Mocking=not funny. I never mocking wasnt funny at all. Just that it it wasnt on south park as of late. They spend more time trying to get their agenda in than being funny lately. the same thing that makes dennis miller not funny at all. You seem to interpret me as saying mocking cant be funny. That is your fault. I never said as much. Be thickheaded about points i didnt make if you please. Just dont blame me for it.
Unibomber 04-09-2006, 12:13 AM One man's opinion, but this is like having to pick between a Bentley and a Rolls. You can't really go wrong with either choice.

you keep making the same point, but it's non-existant.
Your point = 'they spend more time trying to get their agenda across then being funny'
my point = 'getting your agenda across IS funny!'
South park has always had an agenda in their episodes. Even the first season had the gay tolerance crap in them.
as for Dennis Miller, to me he isn't funny because I can't understand his viewpoints or logic. He's not funny because his message comes from the mind of a silver spooned imbecile. He challenges no social taboos, never thinks outside the box and does nothing groundbreaking. Fuck his agenda as well, that's because his agenda is to put his tongue deep into an elephant's (meaning republican) asshole. Basically if you took the blue collar comedy dudes and told them "try to do Intelligent Humor", you would end up with Dennis Miller.
There is only two thoughts in each of your posts so far, "South Park isn't funny" and "South Park mocks people". That's why it's your fault, You can't even word the shit differently to get your point across yet you feel it's important enough to repeat consistently. I don't know if your vocabulary is limited or what, but I'm not going to lie about it. It's frustrating trying to communicate with someone who doesn't appear to think.
and how the fuck do you say you didn't make these bullshit "points" anyways?
Its "who can we mock?" every week instead of "whats funny"

it's the only thing you've said the whole time. They don't fucking 'mock' people anyways. Mocking is mimmicking someone's gestures and voice to irritate them. They satirize different elements in society like a good comic should do. Satire = funny, if it isn't funny then it's a bad satire.
Truthfully, you're probably my favorite poster on this board. You're so eager to be misunderstood it's hilarious, plus you misunderstand just about everything that's said to you. god knows you'll never get what anyone else says right though, and if something does sink in then you just leave the thread. You're aware on many levels socially, racially, and politically though. That's what I really like. One of these days you'll look around to see how zombified everyone else is and you'll end up angry, pissed off and depressed just like my crazy ass.

ok, now i see you clearly. You just think i don't understand what you're saying. You can't follow my logic though and therefore sound dumb as fuck to me.
No. I think that you have trouble understanding the problem of your rebuttles. case and point coming up.
you keep making the same point, but it's non-existant.
Your point = 'they spend more time trying to get their agenda across then being funny'
my point = 'getting your agenda across IS funny!'
Here's the problem. Getting your agenda across isnt always funny. You just think it is. i said it wasnt but you seem to miss that part. you keep swearing it is. to go even further you're copping a minor attitude about me referring to it as mocking. Refer to it as you please. Spin it whatever way you want. if the shit isnt funy. it isnt funny.
Nothing repetitive being started by me. I said south park isnt as funny as used to be. Made my case with the recent episode, which wasnt that funny. Where things get repetitive is all these excuses for it not being funny. And on top of that you seem to think their attempt at satire alone made it funny.
Of course i see that you dont get that i'm saying that their attempt at humor, satire, and any other form of comedy was bad last week. But their agenda was clear. It was very clear. They cared more about that, than it being funny. and it has been average more often as of late. nothing worthy of being an animated show to keep up with, let alone call the best one out there. Does that come across clear enough for you Koolaid? Their agenda was clear, just not funny. Thus agenda alone doesnt make shit funny.

Once again not my fault. You still didnt get it. maybe the last paragraph will help you. At this rate maybe not. Anything repeated was something you didnt get. You swore to have got it. But I still had to explain it. Blaming me because you have to be told something over and over again? You're on your own with that.
Truthfully, you're probably my favorite poster on this board. You're so eager to be misunderstood it's hilarious, plus you misunderstand just about everything that's said to you. god knows you'll never get what anyone else says right though, and if something does sink in then you just leave the thread. Unfortunately you're not my favorite. Not even my most hated. Your probally the most irrelevent poster to me. You're not that aware on many of those same things you acuse me of being aware on. Unless we let you tell it. Of course i'm not the guru on any of them in my own right. Wouldnt claim to be. But theres nothing to ever be continuously angry about in this world unless you can't man up and deal with it. And depression is for women and self loathing people. Unlike you, i have nothing to hate about myself or about the "zombies" roaming the world as you say. Of course maybe its your interpretation of me being something that you emulate racially, mentally, and culturally with a really bad idea on whats what. That causes you to expect me to crack like you seem to have dealing with the basic bs of living. Just food for thought. I'll make one thing clear though. You're playing yourself if you think theres something in common amongst me and you. You cant relate to half the shit you think you do. And i dont mean to be rude in saying that. It is what it is though.
We should be pretty clear now. If not, it wont get any clearer. Because this thread has outlived its existence. Your final off topic "i like you as a poster" paragraph made sure of that. I'm sure you want to reply. dont make it too long since i'm pretty much done with this subject. Enjoy the show. Can't say i did much as of late(though every now and then they have a funny episode). But to each his own.

yeah it's like I think cops is on and their going to show some heheh domestic disputes or something so I'm not reading this crap.
geerussell 04-10-2006, 11:02 AM Family Guy is overrated. South Park is like an aging slugger that can still put it over the wall but sets career highs for strikeouts every season.
I miss watching Beavis and Butthead. There was a show that knew how to walk off into the sunset on a high note.
