View Full Version : Old School Baseballers
Moodini31 04-06-2006, 02:48 PM Baseball is OK these days, but the players just aren't as cool. Let's think back to about the mid 80's and name some tight players. Maybe some guys you'd see when you opened a pack of Topps. I was doing this the other day with my buddy and we were having a blast.
I'll get it started.

Kent Hrbek. I used to call him "Kent Home Run-bek." This cat was a slugger for the Kirby Puckett era Twins. Awesome!
Glenn 04-06-2006, 02:51 PM I'm going to love this thread on a day when I have more time.
Until then, I'll leave you with Dan Gladden, owner of one of the best mullets of all time.

flipscrackers 04-06-2006, 11:08 PM Julio Franco.
Card's from 1990, but he's been in the league since the dawn of time, so why not include the period when he was rockin with some longer hair.

Vinny 04-06-2006, 11:10 PM HAHA -- I forgot about those 1990 Topps cards. They looked absurd.

Gotta tap into the old school Tigers!

Was this guy really a major league 3rd baseman? He looks like a dirty old high school science teacher.
Vinny 04-07-2006, 01:58 PM I always thought Darrell Evans was a Hall Of Famer when I was a kid:

Gecko 04-09-2006, 10:30 AM I must say that baseball holds a special place in my heart. My parents tell me that I used to read the box scores as early as 5 years old. They even have a picture of me laying nude in the kitched reading the box scores. I was into numbers, err not like rainman.
Here's a few that I recall from my childhood....some lesser talked about guys.
Ed Farmer - Always seemed like he was headhunting or fighting.
Favorite Tiger growing up: Champ Summers
JR Richard - first pitcher I remember throwing over 100 miles an hour
Kent Tekluve - who didn't try to imitate his submarine deliery?
oops gotta get going to the Pistons game, I'll add some more later.

Super tight, but how old are you man? [smilie=huh.gif] I don't remember any of those cats and I vividly remember the '84 Tigers. (I was 4)
Gecko 04-09-2006, 05:42 PM Looking back, when you're a child the players you like or that stand out can be so off the beaten path.
I liked the Orioles at one point, whatever year they went to the WS (1983?) Al Bumbry and Tippy Martinez was my favorite players from this team.
The Brewers reall stand out to me back then too. Some pretty good teams with Molitor, Yount and Cecil Cooper.
The dude that used to play in the field with a toohpick in his mouth I remember too, UL Washington SS I think?
I lived to watch TWIB with Curt Gaudy. It came on Saturdays mornings. best damn intro theme music for a sports show ever! Beats Hockey Night in Canada's if you ask me.
I would be remiss if while reminicing about the 80's I didn't mention Morgana the Kissing Bandit.

Glenn 04-11-2006, 04:48 PM I used to love watching those old Braves teams from the early 80's on WTBS (then WTCT).
Here's a few of my old faves:
Glenn Hubbard (The Hub) and Rafael Ramirez (Raffy)
