View Full Version : Mike James - how much would you pay?
i don't have the quotes, but lately, Mike James seems to be talking about getting paid what he deserves. he's got a player option at the end of the season. i think i remember him saying he wouldn't mind staying in Toronto (not 100% sure about that one).
we all know he plays tough (and he's a fantastic defender in the eyes of some here) and in toronto, he's put up some great numbers as a starter:
19.6 ppg, 5.9 apg, 3.3 rpg, 0.9 spg, 46.4% FG, 42.4% 3pt, 82.3% FT
he's had 10 games with 30+ points, this season
he's had 10 double-doubles, this season

so, if you're Toronto's GM, what do you pay the man? what GM's from other teams should be looking at Mike James? how about similar players and their contracts?

WTFchris 04-06-2006, 09:00 AM nobody is going to offer him huge money, despite the numbers. You could probably pay him 6-7 mil starting for a 5-6 year deal.

glancing over at rgm's raptor board, it seems that many there want james on the cheap or to S&T him. some are quoting about $5-6M a year.
is MJ just a good backup PG who's putting up numbers on a crappy team?

haha, "If they did their research on me, they'd know i've been jacking my entire career" - James on his shooting in Toronto
Hermy 04-06-2006, 09:11 AM Thats the MLE now Chris, the economics of the league have changed. I bet he gets a 4 year deal that runs from 8 to 10 million from a team like the Hawks....in fact I'll say right now he plays pg for the Hawks. They'll need scoring, need a pg, and Woody loves him I'm sure. He and Smith would be a tough defensive guard tandum.
(How foolishly underpaid is our backcourt BTW).

haha, "If they did their research on me, they'd know i've been jacking my entire career" - James on his shooting in Toronto
at the very end, MJ talks about boxing during the off-season....he ends the interview with: "Wherever i go, next season, i'm going to be a terror in the NBA next season."
the guy certainly never has a shortage of words, lol.
Pharaoh 04-06-2006, 09:15 AM Full MLE for 3 years, that's it
He's 31 and if Toronto are sold on Ukic and Jose there is no point spending big money on an aging gunner.
They would be better off chasing Speedy Claxton or another young PG in free agency.
BTW, did anyone check his FG attempts?
15.4 per game
Bosh's? 15.5 per
Hermy 04-06-2006, 09:26 AM Just for clarity I wouldn't pay him more than 7mil for 3yrs. Then again I wouldn't give Joe Johnson the max and give up a bunch of picks and Diaw to do it.

THANK YOU. There is no way that he gets more than the MLE. I feel as if some team will probably give him more than 3 years but there is no way he get 7 or 8 million a year unless a team such as the Hawks just say screw it because no one wants to sign there.
Colangelo said that the Raps are interested in keeping him, but only as a 2-guard. I don't think the Raps front office wants to keep him, however they also have to keep Bosh happy, and Bosh while he hasn't made any demands, has said he would like Mike James back with the Raps.
I can't see him getting more that the full MLE, and I think he could be in a bidding war of sorts with a few playoff teams looking to add him to their bench as a sixth man/third guard in a three guard rotation sorta deal.
Darth Thanatos 04-06-2006, 01:39 PM Mike James is terrible. No way he gets more than the MLE.

ok now when can he start us?
MOLA1 04-06-2006, 08:16 PM http://youtube.com/watch?v=FIXwkkZyi9kHe meant to say, "You miss a hundred percent of the shots you [don't] take"
That's a Gretzky quote and I live by it. You can apply it to any facet of life.
What James said, "You miss a hundred percent of the shots you take" applies to Fatoine Walker.
H1Man 04-06-2006, 10:37 PM It depends on what role (backup or starter) he is being signed for.
As a starter, he would probably command something like $7-$8 Million over 4 years. If he is being signed as a backup or a 3rd game, I wouldn't give him more than $4 Million a year.
Pharaoh 04-07-2006, 11:37 AM How the fuck is Mike James worth $7 million?
He's a career back-up, gunning PG/under-sized gunning SG and is 31.
WTF!
Somone post a free agent list because Mike James must be the only fucker available if he's gonna get that much money.

He isn't. But that is what I expect some team to pay him.
Like you said, the market is what it is.
Black Dynamite 04-07-2006, 07:41 PM bobby simmons contract gave a pretty good idea of the market. he had one year like he did in Cliptown to get that money. the year james is having is actually better than that. but factoring in his age keeps him from getting anymore that bobby simmons money territory or slightly lower.
