MIAMI (AP) -- Richard Hamilton says the Detroit Pistons go into hostile environments with a "me against the world attitude."
And when the Pistons come calling, the world -- or whoever they're playing that night -- usually loses.
Rasheed Wallace returned from his one-game suspension to score 20 points, Tayshaun Prince added 20 and Hamilton scored 19 as the Pistons saw most of a 12-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate before beating the injury-depleted Miami Heat 95-82 on Thursday night.
It was the 27th road win this season for the Pistons, a franchise record.
"We take a lot of pride in being a good road team," said guard Chauncey Billups, the Pistons' MVP candidate who had 14 points and nine assists. "From Day 1, we talked about being a great road team."
Detroit (61-14) won its sixth straight and moved three games ahead of idle San Antonio in the race for the NBA's best record -- the only major piece of regular-season business that remains for the Pistons, who need only three more wins to set a franchise single-season record.
Dwyane Wade had 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Shaquille O'Neal scored 28 for Miami, which played without injured starters James Posey and Jason Williams, plus top reserve Alonzo Mourning.
"We're not going to use that as an excuse," Wade said. "Of course, we can't wait to get our whole team back, but you know, we gave ourselves a chance tonight on our home floor. They made the plays ... they made the plays that the best team in the NBA makes to win."
The Heat missed all 10 of their 3-point tries, were outrebounded 42-40 and had only their two stars manage more than six points.
"Against a team like that, you have to do everything right," O'Neal said. "Once again, they capitalized off our mistakes. They just played well. When we play that team, we have to do everything right."
Detroit won the season series 3-1 over the team it beat in last year's Eastern Conference finals, and has won nine of 14 matchups between the clubs since the start of last season.
"Every time we play Miami, regardless if it's in the playoffs or a regular-season game or preseason game, the tension, the excitement, everything is there," Pistons center Ben Wallace said.
Miami (49-26) lost for the fifth time in nine games, and saw its edge for the East's second-best record shrink to 2 1/2 games over New Jersey, which beat Charlotte for its 14th straight win earlier Thursday.
Unlike the Pistons' last visit, when Wade single-handedly outscored Detroit in the final period to key a 100-98 Heat win, Miami couldn't dig out of this deficit -- but it sure came close.
Rasheed Wallace's three-point play with 9:23 left gave the Pistons a 77-65 lead before Miami scored the game's next 10 points to climb within two.
And it wasn't on the backs of the Heat stars, either; Shandon Anderson, Derek Anderson and Michael Doleac combined to score eight points in the Miami run, which ended when Prince scored from the right baseline with 5:55 left to restore a four-point Detroit advantage.
O'Neal had a dunk with 4:04 left that got Miami within 81-79, but the Heat didn't manage another field goal the rest of the way and the Pistons closed the game on a 14-3 run.
"We thought we were going to win," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We can play with anyone when we're really in it and focused mentally on what we have to take away from a team like that."
The Heat never led after intermission. Rasheed Wallace hit a 3-pointer -- the first of the game -- early in the third period to put Detroit up 49-43, but Wade scored four of the next six points to help Miami pull back into a tie.
Detroit scored 10 of the next 12 points, though, a run started by Billups' 3-pointer and capped by another 3-pointer from the Pistons' MVP candidate 3 1/2 minutes later, giving his team a 61-51 edge.
Miami scored the next six points, but got no closer in the period. Wallace hit three free throws with 1.8 seconds left -- he was kneed by Miami's Antoine Walker while shooting a 3-pointer -- for a 70-61 Detroit lead, followed by Tony Delk's jumper on the first possession of the fourth quarter for an 11-point edge.
And although they were tested, the Pistons hung on.
"Hopefully we'll play these guys again," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "But we both have a lot of work to do before that."
Notes
Wade has 75 straight double-digit scoring efforts, tying the franchise record by Mourning. ... Billups and Hamilton both drew technical fouls for arguing with 1:13 left in the half, after Prince didn't draw a foul call. ... The starting centers were a combined 2-for-9 from the foul line in the first quarter, with O'Neal's 1-for-4 slightly better than Ben Wallace's 1-for-5, one-airball performance.

The final regular-season meeting between the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat won't result in any change in the Eastern Conference standings. What it might serve as is a final scouting opportunity for two clubs that could be headed for a playoff showdown.
The Pistons go for their sixth straight victory and look to move closer to locking up home-court advantage throughout the NBA playoffs when they face the Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Detroit easily has the best record in the East, and also leads San Antonio for the best overall mark in the league and the battle for home-court throughout the postseason. The Pistons' 34-3 home record is tops in the NBA.
Detroit pulled to within three victories of tying the franchise single-season record by defeating New Orleans 101-93 on Tuesday night.
With Rasheed Wallace suspended, forward Antonio McDyess had a season-high 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who won for the 20th time in 21 home games.
"Antonio was great tonight," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "He's been playing like that for a while now. He has a lot of confidence in himself."
McDyess didn't start, but played a team-high 37 minutes. He is shooting 61 percent (33-for-54) and has averaged 15.0 points during the win streak, more than seven above his average.
While the Pistons' main focus is securing home court, they need only four wins in their final eight games to break the team record set during the 63-19 season of 1988-89 -- when they won the first of back-to-back NBA championships.
"We're not going to chase that record, but if it comes, it comes," Saunders said. "Our focus right now is health and staying sharp. We're going to rest some guys and give our bench extended minutes to get them ready for the playoffs."
The suspension of Wallace, who served an automatic one-game ban for receiving 16 technical fouls, ended Detroit's record run of 73 straight games with the same starting lineup: Wallace, Ben Wallace, Tayshaun Prince, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton. Counting last year's playoffs, the streak was 98 games.
Miami has struggled with injuries of late and struggled somewhat on the court, dropping two of three since an 18-3 surge. The Heat have lost starting point guard Jason Williams for the rest of the regular season due to a sore knee, although he may return for playoffs, and starting forward James Posey has missed three straight games with ankle tendinitis.
The Heat dropped road games on Saturday and Sunday to Cleveland and New Jersey, respectively, but returned home Tuesday and routed Milwaukee 115-89.
Miami leads the Nets by 3 1/2 games for the No. 2 seed in the East. If the Heat secure that spot, they wouldn't face the Pistons until the conference finals.
Shaquille O'Neal had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and five other Miami players scored in double figures.
"That's one of the better games, more complete games that we've played in a long time," Miami coach Pat Riley said after his team opened with a 13-0 run and never trailed.
Dwyane Wade had accounted for 41 percent of Miami's offense in its previous three games, and Riley asked his players to take some of the pressure off the team's scoring leader. Wade took just 10 shots and finished with 14 points against the Bucks.
The Heat have lost 12 of their last 15 games against the Pistons.

When was the last time Chauncey Billups was a superstar guard for the Seattle Supersonics of a decade ago?
NEVER!!!

Prince and Devin=even. Taymil flipped the fuck out.
what a great psychological edge it would be, if we were to whoop them on their own home floor. i know some might not believe in psychological advantages, but i really think that it gets in some guys' heads. maybe not guys like Wade and Shaq, but some of the role players might start to doubt themselves, like Haslem and rest of the scrubs.

Sheed is back starting, Bubba is back on the bench. Rip is probably, but a game time decision.
I have a bad feeling about tonights game, not about the score or who wins/loses but a key injury.
HYDE: Less is more where O'Neal is concerned
Published April 6, 2006
MIAMI -- With the Heat playing Detroit tonight, it's tempting to call it a pre-playoff litmus test when it will tell us nothing new, especially with three of the Heat's top eight players injured in Alonzo Mourning, Jason Williams and James Posey.
So let's talk about something new you will see tonight. Something that is important to the playoffs.
Let's talk about The Incredibly Shrinking Shaquille O'Neal.
Have you see him lately? Or what's left of him?
OK, at 322 pounds, squinting still isn't necessary. It's Mt. Rushmore minus a few boulders. But watch him run the court in a way he wasn't in February. Watch him move more easily to the basket.
On a team beset by injuries, in a season of dramatic coaching change, at an age where conditioning really matters to O'Neal, it's telling that in the last several weeks he has gotten down to his lowest playing weight in a decade.
"I was up to 335 this year," he said.
C'mon.
"OK, 340," he said.
C'mon.
"All right, 345," he said.
Do I hear 350? 355? Guessing what O'Neal has weighed through the years has been like guessing the number of jelly beans in a jar.
When O'Neal was with the Lakers in 2003, coach Phil Jackson said O'Neal once tipped the scale at 358 pounds. He was fit last year with the Heat. But when he arrived at camp this fall, O'Neal said he had bulked back up over the offseason to protect against the previous year's muggings, insinuating that freak thigh injury that plagued him in the playoffs was the result of being too light.
Of course, what really was at work this fall was O'Neal not working. He was lazy. That's part of his regular-season gig. And at a February practice, coach Pat Riley had enough.
"Pat called me out, said I didn't meet his requirements," O'Neal said. "He said if I didn't meet them, I wouldn't be waived, but I'd be -- what's it called? -- deactivated."
Lingo like that is so foreign to O'Neal that he doesn't even know it. And that story is telling on a couple of levels. First, if the Heat doesn't have a coaching change, does this message get sent?
Stan Van Gundy couldn't have talked to O'Neal like that. That's no slap at Van Gundy. There are only two coaches in the league with the credentials to push O'Neal like that.
That's in part the way the NBA is today and in good part because Riley and Jackson have more rings than O'Neal does. They're stars in his universe. And that's part of why the coaching change was better for the Heat.
Of course, such talk only works if O'Neal gets motivated. And that's the second level on which Riley's calling-out is interesting. O'Neal says he changed that day. He got on a Balance For Life diet. For a guy with a personal chef at home, that's something. He now gets six meals a day delivered to his home.
"You eat more meals a day so you aren't as hungry and actually eat less," he said.
No more ice cream, pizza, burgers, late-night snacks, fast food ...
"He'll sneak a chicken nugget from me once in a while," Dwyane Wade said.
The big question: What does this have to do with winning? Well, the Heat only wins if O'Neal is on the court at the top of his game. And at 34, that's increasingly risky, not just this year but for the four remaining years on his contract -- and more so if he's carrying extra tonnage.
Sure, his numbers are down this year in part because his playing time is down and fouls are up. And he's in a battle with referees on how they'll call games.
He'll chant the big-game mantra about tonight if you want.
"We know we've got to go through them, and they know they've got to go through us," he says of the Pistons.
But you want a better indicator for the Heat than tonight? Listen closely to the thud around the Heat. It's the sound of O'Neal dropping pounds, one by one, for the playoffs.

Gonna be a good game tonight. My prediction: Pistons by 5 in OT 98-93

Black Dynamite 04-06-2006, 05:34 PM E-Ray you've officially made your best sig ever on a side note. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:
Glenn 04-06-2006, 06:12 PM For the gamblers out there, the Pistons are anywhere from a 1 point dog to a one point favorite tonight, depending on where you look.
The total is generally 188.
The Pistons are 5-11-2 against the spread over their last 18 games.
Waydowntownbang 04-06-2006, 06:23 PM "Thank You Roof"...
I'm still laughing...

my money is on him eating through the glass to make his point. Glenn whats the Spread on this mayo?
H1Man 04-06-2006, 09:56 PM How serious is Rip's injury?
He isn't making the shots that he normally makes. I wonder if his injury has anything to do with that.
beating Miami never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever gets old.
Kstat 04-06-2006, 11:00 PM Well, that was an empty game thread.
Oh well, we got the win.
Very pleased tonight.
61-14
FRANCHISE RECORD 27 road wins!
magic number to clinch the NBA's best record: 4
Black Dynamite 04-06-2006, 11:13 PM we had too much fun in the chatrrom. either way it was a good game, but we gotta remember that their defense will be better in the playoffs with Zo and Posey back.
Kstat 04-06-2006, 11:20 PM Posey hasn't shown shit this year defensively.
Zo's another matter, but who knows if he'll even be healthy.
I'm not so sure this won't be the last time we play Miami this season.

i dont count them out. the nets arent a lock to knock them off.
Kstat 04-06-2006, 11:26 PM No but Miami sure as shit isn't a lock to knock off NJ either.
post game stuff up, in original post
As long as that series goes the distance I don't care who wins.
Watched the game at a bar with a buddy so we could see both games at once. Kinda sucked though since we chose a place that didn't play the sound. I was surprised that the Heat didn't push the Pistons more toward the end. Seemed like a rather easy finish to a game that was pretty close the rest of the way. Nice to see the great point distribution and Tay stepping up. Great D by Rip. He's really showing that he can make Wade work while still getting his own at the other end. I'm getting less and less concerned about Wade taking enough games on his own to turn the series. Always love to see the fouth quarter Shaq come out and clang those 6-10 foot jumpers and hooks.
we had too much fun in the chatrrom.
