Pistons 101, Sixers 91

March 29, 2006
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- With a balanced, dominant and deep roster, Detroit swept the season series against Philadelphia.
With the way both teams are playing down the stretch, the Pistons can start thinking about another possible sweep over the Sixers, only this time in the postseason.
Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess each scored 18 points to lead the Detroit Pistons over the slumping Philadelphia 76ers 101-91 on Wednesday night.
Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince both had 16 points and Ben Wallace grabbed 11 rebounds for the Pistons.
Detroit has a comfortable lead in the Eastern Conference standings, while the Sixers' three-game losing streak has them in eighth place. The Pistons beat the Sixers in five games in last season's first-round, best-of-seven matchup.
"Everybody's playing together, everybody's playing in sync," Ben Wallace said. "That's all we can ask for right now."
No one on Philadelphia can say that.
Allen Iverson led the Sixers with 28 points, Chris Webber had 23 and Kyle Korver added 13.
After winning five of six following the All-Star break, Philadelphia has since played its worst basketball of the season. The Sixers have lost 10 of their last 12 games and have only a 1 1/2 -game lead over Chicago for the final playoff spot.
"This hurts, man. Ten out of 12," Webber said. "How many times have I said the word 'hurt' in an interview after a game?"
The Sixers (32-38) dropped six games below .500 for the first time since Dec. 8, 2004.
"I can't tell you anything that is going to make you feel like we are going to turn it around," Iverson said. "All I can do is believe in that and realize that we are still alive. We still have a chance to make it into another season, that's the most positive part of all of it."
Detroit Pistons' Antonio McDyess (24) and Chauncey Billups block Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson (3) in the second half of their NBA basketball game Wednesday, March 29, 2006, in Philadelphia. The Pistons won 101-91.
While the Pistons delivered a potent preview of what Philadelphia could face in the postseason, Webber believed the Sixers sent a message, also: "We're sending a message that we don't really give a damn sometimes."
Webber and Iverson kept the Sixers close, though it seemed at times Detroit was merely teasing them and simply waiting for its time to take control. That came in the fourth, when the Pistons got 3-pointers from Lindsey Hunter and Rasheed Wallace as part of a 10-0 run to open the quarter.
"Teams are waiting for us to get things turned up," Detroit coach Flip Saunders said. "When that happens, that's when we go on our little runs."
Hunter scored only two points through the first three quarters, then had seven in the fourth. The Sixers were sloppy, also, with two turnovers that Detroit converted into points during its run. Later in the quarter, Iverson tried to pass to Webber under the basket, only to have the forward stop short and the ball fly out of bounds.
Korver sank a 3 and Samuel Dalembert scored to pull the Sixers within nine, but Billups wowed the crowd when he spun around Korver in the paint and hit a jumper to push the lead back to double digits.
Billups kicked out to Prince on the next possession for a 3-pointer that made it 99-86 and the crowd began to file out.
"We can always get what we think is necessary," Prince said.
The Sixers shot a respectable 51 percent, but committed 19 turnovers.
The Pistons got 3-pointers from Billups and Hamilton late in the third to wipe out a brief Sixers spurt that pulled them within two. Webber then smartly tossed up a 3-point shot while Prince lunged at him, and was fouled. He sank all three free throws, then followed with a 16-footer the next time down to make it 71-68.
Detroit hasn't dominated the East the last three seasons without reason. Again, they cut the Sixers' run off before they really got rolling, with Hamilton and Prince scoring quick baskets that made it 75-68 at the end of the quarter.
"If we fall apart, it's all gonna end," Korver said. "That's the one thing we can't do right now is fall apart.
Notes
Saunders was whistled for a technical in the first quarter. ... Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks is disappointed his team hasn't shown a real understanding of how crucial these games are. "I'm looking for someone, and there are a couple of people, to realize the urgency of where we are," he said. "The last couple of games is not where I'd like it to be in terms of the urgency." ... R&B singer Ray J, Brandy's little brother, performed a postgame concert. ... Webber has scored 20-plus points in a season-high five straight games.

In what could be an opening-round playoff preview, the Detroit Pistons look to maintain their recent dominance over the Philadelphia 76ers when the teams meet at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Detroit, which owns the league's best record, has shot just under 50.0 percent while winning four straight at home over Philadelphia.
In what may have been an NBA Finals preview, Detroit avenged a 37-point blowout loss to Dallas earlier this season with a 97-90 win Tuesday over the Mavericks.
Chauncey Billups scored eight of his game-high 31 points in the final three minutes, helping the Pistons earn a season-series split with Dallas that could play a pivotal role in determining postseason homecourt advantage should they meet.
"This is a very big win, but we won't know just how big for a while," said Billups, who also had 11 assists. "It might be huge, or it might just end up as another victory."
Detroit, which leads Dallas by 2 1/2 games for the league's beat record, lost to the Mavs 119-82 on Nov. 19.
Rasheed Wallace also had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
"It's a lot of fun to play games like this," he said. "Especially when you're going up against one of the NBA's best teams."
The Pistons won despite another off night from scoring leader Richard Hamilton, who was just 6-of-14 from the field and finished with 14 points -- the fifth straight game in which he has scored less than 20.
Hamilton, who was born about 45 miles outside Philadelphia in Coatesville, Pa., is averaging 33.5 points in two games this season against the Sixers.
Philadelphia is looking to bounce back from one of its worst games of the season, a 92-79 loss Sunday to Indiana. It was the Sixers' second-lowest scoring game of the season, surpassed only by a 104-76 setback on Jan. 16 to Washington.
Allen Iverson, the league's second-leading scorer, had 26 points and six assists against Indiana. Chris Webber added 24 points for the Sixers though no other Philadelphia player finished with more than eight points.
"There's no way to explain it," Iverson said. "We got beat up ... We're not stopping anybody. It's hard to get into a running game or get easy baskets when you're always taking the ball out of bounds after the other team scores."
The Sixers are clinging to eighth place in the Eastern Conference, two games ahead of Chicago and four in front of Boston. Philadelphia, though, has two games in hand over the Bulls and Celtics.
The Sixers have two games against the Bulls sandwiched around a meeting with the Celtics starting April 5 in Phildelphia.

Iverson says he's not at his best
The Sixer admits that his right ankle is still weak and his conditioning is not back up to speed.
By Joe Juliano
Inquirer Staff Writer
Allen Iverson won't dwell on being tired from the grind of the long NBA season. The 76ers guard says he is fine "as far as my stamina and everything like that."
But Iverson did admit yesterday that he hasn't gotten back his conditioning since returning to the lineup after a sprained right ankle that kept him out of four games earlier this month, and that the ankle still isn't 100 percent.
"It's just the ankle injury and not being out there on the floor," Iverson said after practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "That's why [coach Maurice Cheeks] tried to keep me out today, to rest a little bit. But I wanted to keep on playing and finish practice out just to try to get in some type of game condition."
Since returning to the lineup last Wednesday, Iverson has shot 34.8 percent from the field in three games and averaged 24.0 points, more than nine less than his average before his injury. In the second half of those three games, he shot 6 for 29 (20.8 percent).
"It's not strong enough; it's weak," Iverson said of the ankle, which he injured March 12 in Memphis. "In the beginning of games, I'm pretty much all right, but once I sit at halftime and it stiffens up and everything, it's kind of tough for me going down the stretch. But I'm fine."
Of course, this presents a dilemma for Cheeks, whose team has lost nine of its last 11 games going into tonight's matchup at the Wachovia Center against the Detroit Pistons, the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference.
Iverson and Chris Webber are the Sixers' main options on offense. But it's clear to the coach that his star guard isn't 100 percent. Cheeks noted that a driving shot by Iverson in the lane rarely is blocked by another guard, which is what Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley did Sunday in the Pacers' win over the Sixers.
As for giving Iverson more rest, Cheeks chuckled and said: "It depends on the game.
"He probably could use a couple of extra minutes here and there," he said. "I thought when he came back in the Atlanta game, he played off adrenaline. The Orlando game was a little bit tougher coming off the four games that he had missed. I think his legs got a little more weary than we probably thought."
It's true that Iverson needs to play closer to his all-star level to get the Sixers out of their funk and hold off the Chicago Bulls in the fight for the eighth playoff spot in the East.
But the team's main problem continues to be defense. The Sixers have allowed each of their last three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent against them. They continue to rank near the bottom of the NBA in points allowed (25th, 101.58), field-goal percentage defense (23d, 46.2 percent) and rebounding margin (25th, minus-2.62).
"We've just got to know that the only way we're going to win games is if we play defense," Iverson said. "When you talk about teams playing together, you feel like it's always about the offensive end, as far as sharing the basketball and everything. But playing together is every aspect of the game, and our problem is that we're not playing on defense - talking, helping each other."
Cheeks said that while it's possible Iverson may be wearing down because of the minutes he has played - a league-leading 43.3 per game - he believes that the player's "competitive drive and understanding where we are does not allow him to wear down."
To Iverson, you only overcome fatigue or injury one way: "You play."
"You just go out and compete in the game that you have to play, one at a time," he said. "You don't think about what's going on with the playoff race or worry about if other teams win games. You've just got to concentrate on what you do as a team, and whatever happens, happens."
Message time? The Pistons, who played at home last night against Dallas, are seeking a three-game sweep of the season series against the Sixers.
To avoid that, Cheeks said he hopes his team can rekindle the focus and effort that resulted in an overtime win against West-leading San Antonio on Feb. 15.
"We need a win no matter who it is," Cheeks said. "Detroit is coming in, and they're one of the best - if not the best team - in the league right now. A win would give us a lot of confidence, but we need to go out and play those full 48 minutes to have a chance of winning this game."
Iverson was asked: If the Sixers and Detroit meet in the first round of the playoffs, would a win tonight show the Pistons something?
"We need to show ourselves," he said. "If we have to face them, this game's not going to mean anything, because they can look at their regular-season record and look at ours and feel confident that they can beat us. This game's not going to matter to those guys, but it will matter to us."
trap game. 2nd of a back-to-back, on the road, after a big win, against a team desperate for wins.
I'll admit that I had no idea there was a game tonight.

[smilie=anxious.gif] Well they should be.
Kstat 03-29-2006, 04:19 PM I dont think securing another 1st round date with the Pistons is something they care a whole lot about.
Aside from iverson I think the other 11 guys would just as soon take the early vacation.
San Antonio plays the Lakers tonight and Dallas is in Cleveland. Let's hope this sin't a let down game for us, because SA and Dallas have much tougher games and a win could get us some breathing room.
Philly is battling for their play-off lives right now, so I think they'll want it more and they'll want to send a message should we be their first rould opponent sorta deal...
Kstat 03-29-2006, 04:21 PM SA plays the Lakers tomorrow not tonight.

Darth Thanatos 03-29-2006, 10:13 PM 9 points from Lindsey. I'm sure that was more than his season total. Good work.

he did nothing to require his presence. philly is the only playoff team we can officially play mo evans against. that says enough.

McDyess has been amazing lately. I wonder if they've figured out how to use him in Flips offense or he just rededicated himself to win this year. He seemed tentative earlier in the year, maybe he just said screw it - it's now or never sorta deal reguarding his knee and all.

for one play. otherwise he was ok on defense, decent passing on a couple breaks, but bad shooting.
Your boy delk wasnt looking too good either.

it was an asertive coaching effort to get him involved mixed with him getting amped up for the playoffs.
They started getting him closer to the baseline for his shots. It had been the case that he would start most of his rotations taking a jumper from the elbow at the lowest but now he's much more parallel to the basket in his first couple of shots. He's still getting a couple at the elbow or higher now and then but they are usually off broken plays or at least well after he's established his range for the night.
Darth Thanatos 03-29-2006, 11:09 PM And at times when he got the ball at the elbow he was able to put the ball on the floor and get to the hole.
Cross 03-30-2006, 02:48 AM Great all around game from our starting 5, based on the box scores.
And at times when he got the ball at the elbow he was able to put the ball on the floor and get to the hole.
Yea, that's what I'm loving about Dice's game right now. He's using that jumper that he has established (I'm sure that's No. 1 on the bench scouting report) to get inside for easy buckets. I wish others would copy him. It's nice to see him get inside and get layups, then step out for the Jumper once he has the D on their heels. I think it has gotten to the point where the defense expects jumpshots, so they are much easier to defend.

Anthony 03-30-2006, 11:40 AM Dyess>Any other 6th man
Too bad it took flip this long to figure out how to use him. He would be an easy pick for 6th man of the year. He's playing the Dyess that we saw in the Finals last year. A man possessed.
metr0man 03-30-2006, 11:43 AM Dice has gone insane. I love it.

Don't get too comfortable with Dice's play. According to the Freep Flip has Dice working on extending his range out to the 3 point line. He wants Dice to play more like Sheed does.

LOL...We see progress. Flip sees disappointment.
"If sheed wont stay out at the 3 point line every possession, i'll have to train someone else to!"
WTFchris 03-30-2006, 12:27 PM He probably just wants Dyess to be able to do pick and rolls higher up like Sheed can. Right now it has to be from 18 feet or closer or Dyess isn't even a threat (doesn't have the speed to blow by and take it to the hole anymore). He probably wants Dyess to have 20 foot range, but only to shoot them out of pick and rolls basically. I can't see Dyess jacking threes like Sheed. He doesn't have the leg strength after all those injuries.
in other news, Dale Davis has entered his name into the 2007 NBA All-Star Weekend Three Point Shootout

What the FUCK!? Dice will knock those short jumprs down all day long. Ugh. Flip's mission to make sure we have no inside presence at all continues! I was just thinking to myself today that I was happy to see Tay become a little more aggressive pushing in closer to the basket and sheed wasn't ignoring the post.

the wrath of diddy 03-30-2006, 10:18 PM LOL I was kidding about Flip wanting to get Dice shooting 3 pointers. But it shows just how in love Flip is with guys chucking from 3 that people believed that shit was actually going on.
Kstat 03-30-2006, 10:24 PM I can't believe you guys bought that shit.

Glenn 03-31-2006, 07:56 AM Does anybody know why Steven Hunter started but only played 4 minutes?
Taymelo 03-31-2006, 08:02 AM No, but I know McCoskey called him a journeman who barely belongs in the NBA yesterday, when wondering out loud what went wrong with Dalembert and how does this guy start in front of him.
