More Human Remains Found Near WTC Site

Construction workers cleaning toxic waste from a vacant skyscraper near the World Trade Center site have found more bone fragments and human remains, officials said Tuesday.

The city medical examiner's office plans to extract DNA from the latest remains to be recovered from the former Deutsche Bank building and try to match it against a database of the 2,749 people killed at the trade center on Sept. 11, 2001, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office.

Fire Department crews had inspected the building in the months following the attacks, but construction workers clearing gravel off the rooftop found 10 bone fragments there last fall.

The new remains were found in recent weeks by crews doing a more thorough cleaning before construction workers begin dismantling the building in June, said John Gallagher, spokesman for the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.

Some victims' family members said forensic experts should search the 41-story building again.

"I'm not trying to malign the construction workers, but this is not what they're trained to do," said Diane Horning, whose son was killed at the trade center and has filed suit to remove trade center debris from a landfill where victims' remains were found.

More than 40 percent of the victims at the trade center have not been identified. The medical examiner's office is storing more than 9,000 unidentified remains and hope that more sophisticated DNA technology can allow for identifications in the future.

Borakove said that two human remains were found Jan. 27 on the 38th floor of the building. She could not say what the remains were or how big they were. Last Friday, workers found two bone fragments on the roof, she said.

"They are definitely human," Borakove said.

The Deutsche Bank building has been vacant since the terrorist attacks, when part of the south tower tore a gash in the building. Deconstruction of the building, which is contaminated with asbestos, lead and trade center dust, began in September.

That is horrifying. 4 and a half years later.

obviously it's fucked up that people died like that.

I don't see what the big deal is though. Everyone knows a shitload of people died that day, did you expect them to just vanish or something?

They found bone fragments. They are dead. So bury them and move on, it's the only option really.

I agree with Koolaid. There still probably are more bones and shit near the WTC. Fucked up, but else was there to expect?

Of course it was expected, it's just unsettling because it's another tangible reminder of something that still seems a little surreal even after a few years.

I know you don't really know what you'll do until you're in someone's shoes, but it sure seems people are hypocritical about the remains of their loved ones.

We say that their soul has left the casing that it was enclosed in, we say its nothing more than a shell, that there's nothing left of the person in there, ashes to ashes, dust to dust - - - and then we spend literally billions of dollars to find bone fragments and little pieces of broken teeth, so we can have a ceremony and bury them.

Again, I don't know how I would react until I was in their shoes... but something tells me I'd be just as "happy" with my loved one memorialized at a service with an empty coffin, as I would be memorializing them with the same service - but with a speck of bone from their pinky finger in the otherwise empty coffin.

Please note: I say this with no disrespect intended to those who have lost loved ones and have not recovered their remains - I'm just thinking out loud here. Things that make you go "hmmm" and all that.

More bones found at trade center site

By AMY WESTFELDT, Associated Press Writer
Thu Nov 9, 10:42 PM ET

NEW YORK - Seven more pieces of remains were found Thursday in the same manhole at ground zero where the discovery of bones prompted a renewed search for Sept. 11 victims.

In all, 210 body parts — ranging from small fragments to full arm and leg bones — have been recovered from three manholes in the service road that had been used to bring construction trucks in on the western edge of the World Trade Center site.

Most — 199 — were found in a nonworking manhole after utility workers came across remains during a routine excavation.

The pieces of bone found Thursday were at the bottom of that manhole, which was checked again in a final sweep, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office. The bones were 1 to 4 inches long; it couldn't be determined which parts of the body they came from, she said.

Workers have found four other bone fragments in two other manholes along the service road this week, and they completely excavated four of 12 manholes and service boxes that officials said were missed during the initial recovery of remains, which ended in 2002.

City officials have said they hope to finish searching manholes on the 16-acre site in the next few weeks. They plan a yearlong search that includes at least one more area on the site, manholes along dozens of blocks close to ground zero, and nearby rooftops and buildings.

Sept. 11 family members have called for a much wider search, saying the entire service road was never dug up thoroughly in the first year after the 2001 terrorist attacks. City officials have said they plan spot checks of different sections of the road and will dig further if they need to.

The medical examiner hopes to use DNA technology to match the remains to more than 1,100 victims at the trade center who have never been identified.
