Pistons 97, Mavs 90
http://www.wtfdetroit.com/ogt/game70pistonsvsmavsbox.jpg
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Pistons enjoyed beating Dallas so much that they want a chance to do it again.
"I told Avery (Johnson) after the game that I'd like to see him seven more times, starting in about three months," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said.
If the Pistons (56-14) and Mavericks (54-17) do meet in June's NBA Finals, Detroit's 97-90 victory Tuesday might play a crucial role in determining who gets the home-court advantage.
"Obviously, this is a very disappointing loss," Johnson said. "We definitely gave ourselves a chance to win, we just didn't execute down the stretch."
With the win, the Pistons split the season series with the Mavericks, and moved 2 1/2 games ahead of them for the league's best record.
"This is a very big win, but we won't know just how big for a while," said Chauncey Billups, who scored eight of his 31 points in the final three minutes. "It might be huge, or it might just end up as another victory."
The win avenged Detroit's worst loss of the season, a 119-82 rout in Dallas on Nov. 19. The Pistons trailed 40-16 after one quarter of that game, and Billups wanted to make sure there wasn't a repeat.
"Dallas and Phoenix are the two teams that really make an effort to jump on you early, so I knew I had to be aggressive tonight," he said. "I think the team plays better when I'm aggressive."
Rasheed Wallace added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, while Richard Hamilton scored 14 points.
"It's a lot of fun to play games like this," Wallace said. "Especially when you are going up against one of the NBA's best teams, like we were tonight."
Dirk Nowitzki and former Piston Jerry Stackhouse each had 25 for Dallas.
"That's as good as it gets in this league," Stackhouse said. "But we're going to look at this film, and we're all going to be (mad), because we had the game. We didn't play smart, and that cost us the game."
Dallas Mavericks guard Jerry Stackhouse puts his hands on his hips in the final minutes of their 97-90 loss to the Detroit Pistons in an NBA basketball game Tuesday March 28, 2006, in Auburn Hills, Mich. Stackhouse scored 25 points in the loss.
Stackhouse, who still holds the Pistons' single-game scoring record, had nine points in the third quarter, but the Mavericks needed Keith Van Horn's late 3-pointer to stay within 72-69 at quarter's end.
"Stack did his thing tonight," said Wallace, a close friend of Stackhouse's since their days at North Carolina. "I just wish he would have done it against someone else."
The teams traded the advantage for most of the fourth, and the game was tied with 3 minutes to play.
That's when Billups hit a free throw after a defensive three-second violation, then added a 3-pointer to give the Pistons a 92-88 lead.
Nowitzki hit a jumper at the other end, but Tayshaun Prince blocked his attempt at a tying shot moments later and Billups iced the game with a 3-pointer.
"We battled, we fought -- this was a playoff atmosphere," Johnson said. "We wish we would have been able to match their intensity down the stretch, but we didn't."
The Pistons trailed for most of the first half, but Billups scored seven points in the final 2 minutes to put them ahead 52-50 at the break.
Notes
Mavericks forward Rawle Marshall, a Detroit native who played at nearby Oakland University, played as a pro for the first time at home. He started, but was scoreless in 11 minutes. ... The Pistons made their first eight 3-pointers before Tony Delk missed at the third-quarter buzzer. The Indiana Pacers have the NBA record with a 7-for-7 game in 1995. ... Stackhouse scored 57 points for the Pistons in Chicago on April 3, 2001.

While the Detroit Pistons are almost certain to finish with the best record in the Eastern Conference, the Dallas Mavericks are in quite a race for the top spot in the West.
A pair of the league's top teams face off when Dallas visits Detroit.
The Pistons have the best record in the NBA, while the Mavs are tied with San Antonio for the top mark in the West. Both the Spurs and Dallas trail Detroit by 1 1/2 games in the race for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Dallas has won five of the last seven meetings with Detroit, including a 119-82 rout on Nov. 19 that handed the Pistons their first loss of the season after an 8-0 start.
Detroit is coming off a rare defeat at home, 79-74 to Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey on Sunday. The loss snapped the Pistons' 16-game winning streak at The Palace of Auburn Hills and was their first in regulation there this season.
Detroit shot a season-low 34.1 percent from the floor and was just 3-for-17 from 3-point range.
"This is a game we had chances to win," said Chauncey Billups, who had only eight points. "I thought our defense was really good tonight. When the defense is bad, I'm concerned. When our offense just isn't making shots -- that happens."
Detroit averages 45.2 percent shooting from the field, but has shot below 39 percent in the last three games. Billups has struggled in the last two contests, scoring a combined 17 points and shooting 25.0 percent.
On Sunday, he didn't score in the first 43 minutes and missed a possible game-tying shot with five seconds left.
"It felt good -- it was halfway down and it came out," Billups said. "That's to be expected when the night is going like that."
Detroit has started the same five players in all 69 games this season, while Dallas has been forced to shuffle its lineup the last few months because of injuries.
After losing two of three, the Mavs rebounded to easily defeat Atlanta 98-83 on Saturday. Dallas took a 16-point lead into halftime en route to winning the opener of its four-game road trip.
Dirk Nowitzki had 27 points and 13 rebounds while Jason Terry added 26 points for Dallas.
"All the remaining games (12) are important. We're jockeying for position every night trying to get the No. 1 seed," Terry said. "During the playoffs the home court means a lot. Last year we didn't have it and lost in six games to Phoenix. We don't want that to happen again."
The Mavs have decided to rest Josh Howard (hamstring) and Devin Harris (strained left thigh) until the last few weeks of the regular season, and continue to play without Adrian Griffin (hamstring).
Dallas, however, had Keith Van Horn return Saturday after missing 11 games with a knee injury.

I'm seriously concerned about this game.
Although Devin Harris being out should help some.
My early prediction is Dallas by 21.
I'll see if you guys can instill some confidence in me and change my mind.
Glenn 03-28-2006, 10:03 AM Check out Matt's little chart in the first post in this thread.
The Mavs are actually holding their opponents to a lower FG% than we are, they are shooting a higher % than we are and while we're getting out rebounded by our opponents, they are grabbing nearly 5 more boards than their opponents per game.
That's pretty telling.
Black Dynamite 03-28-2006, 10:04 AM I'll see if you guys can instill some confidence in me and change my mind.

MOLA1 03-28-2006, 10:22 AM That might be one of the best OGT posts in the history of the board besides mine.
I'm now super pumped for this game more than I was a minute ago yes!!!
WalledLakeBomber 03-28-2006, 10:28 AM If the Pistons are going to win tonight they have to exploit the Dirk-Sheed matchup. Sheed has to make Dirk work hard on defense and cannot settle for the outside shot. If Sheed is jacking them up from outside early it could mean a long night. Chauncey also has to exploit Terry on defense some post ups could go a long way to getting him out of his scoring funk.

All good points WLB. I think the main thing our guys need to do is just
make shots difficult. Dallas can score like a motherfucker and now that
they've added some defense to their game, they're very deadly.
It would be really cool to see the refs call this as close to clean as possible.
If that happens, Dallas is fucked because they hack like crazy. I predict a
close hard fought game with the Pistons winning by 18...105-87.
Our bench is crucial tonight. Dallas rests alot of their players and bring
different cats off the bench throughout the game including Grand Marshall Rawle.

I agree on the refs playing a crucial role, it kinda goes back to my Dirk-Sheed point. If Sheed works down in the post enough against Dirk foul trouble could happen to the big German. The Pistons are still 14-5 this year against the big boys of the league I see them winning at home tonight say 95-88.

I wonder if we'll go small tonight when Rasheed needs a breather. SA had success with Bowen guarding Nowitzki afterall, why not try Tay on him??
Of course that would probably mean less McDyess and more Evans, so maybe that isn't such a good idea afterall...

I was going to say the same thing. Tayshaun has the length to bother and he shouldn't get beat off the dribble by a 7-footer (I would hope not [smilie=anxious.gif]). It might be something to try.

Book on Mavs-Pistons: Titles speak volumes
01:44 AM CST on Tuesday, March 28, 2006
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – A lively debate raged Monday in advance of the Mavericks' visit to the team they massacred in November.
On one side, the Detroit Pistons were showing their utter disregard for the regular season, flaunting the fact they've played for the NBA championship the last two seasons, winning it once.
On the other side, the Mavericks were wondering how they can change the galactic perception that they are great regular-season artists but no Rembrandts when it comes to the playoffs.
And do they really owe anybody any apologies for their regular-season greatness the last five seasons?
The Mavericks and Pistons won't have a fire-and-brimstone rivalry unless they someday meet in the Finals. But since the Pistons got whacked by 37 points at American Airlines Center – their first loss this season after starting 8-0 – tonight's months-removed meeting at The Palace of Auburn Hills offers an intriguing story line.
Add the Mavericks' quest for credibility, and it has the chance to be a fun evening.
"Dallas is good," Detroit's Richard Hamilton said. "Their record speaks for itself. But when everybody was telling us we had an opportunity for 70 wins, [I said] if we don't win a championship, that's not a successful season for us.
"Whatever you do in the regular season is easy. You really got to step up in the playoffs. Until you do that, the regular season really doesn't mean anything."
Hard to miss that message if you're the Mavericks, although they would like to think averaging 57 wins the last five seasons means something. And it does, just like being on pace to win 63 games this season is an achievement.
But Rasheed Wallace amplified Hamilton's point.
"They've had good records the last few years," he said, "but weren't able to go far into the playoffs. That's one of the knocks people are saying about them."
Avery Johnson is a firm believer in building one's reputation in the playoffs. Does that mean the regular season is an 82-game piece of gum on their shoe?
No, because you build a championship mentality from October on through June, not just in the playoffs, Johnson said.
"The coach understands it," he said when asked if the Mavericks adhere to the playoff-centric attitude. "That's all that matters. A lot of them [Detroit players] didn't understand it until they won it. They found out when they got here and it all came together."
Jerry Stackhouse was with the Pistons before they became an elite team. He said the mentality has changed in Motown because of the 2004 championship banner.
"Everybody's mentality isn't that way," he said. "Our goal is for a championship. But if we play as well as we can, and it's not in the cards, you can't say it's all for naught.
"Detroit was seven bad minutes away from not even being in the Finals last season. It would have been Miami representing the Eastern Conference. So they're saying that was nothing if they lost that?"
One more game: Josh Howard and Adrian Griffin are closing in on their return, but Wednesday's game at Cleveland is more likely than tonight's in Detroit.
Howard went through most of practice Monday and said his left hamstring was improved. Griffin participated in part of practice.
Different approach: In its last three games, Detroit has held Miami to 73 points, Indiana to 72 and New Jersey to 79.
Coach Flip Saunders doesn't expect such a performance tonight. He said the pressure will be on Detroit's offense.
"There's no question that we're going to have to score more points because Dallas is going to score."

i hope we don't try to get into a shootout with them.
Kstat 03-28-2006, 06:00 PM Dallas doesn't get into shootouts anymore.
This really shouldn't be that bad... Ben just had to show up. Last time he let Dampier go for 16 points (8-9 FG) and 14 rebounds in 24 minutes.
Also, Josh Howard went for 26 points, 8 boards, and he might not even play. Devin Harris had 14 points last time as well, and he definately won't be there.

9:50 pm [Kstat]: mr big turnover strikes again!
9:50 pm [Fekz]: FUCKETH YEAH
A win's a win and really nice for HCA but this team has flaws that could be fatal in the later rounds. We shot 10 extra free throws and hit 9-12 3 pointers, both of which won't happen in the play-offs.
I'll NEVER understand Ben and his free-throws. Does he even give a damn?? I mean he has a glib attitude about them. I can't believe he never puts work in on them - I don't care how many shots he might take in practice, I think he has accepted that he isn't a free-throw shooter and never will be sorta deal because his mechanics change with every damn shot.
We're going to have to take him off the floor in close games in the play-offs - or we would McDyess wasn't shooting 50% as well. Basically come close games, Ben Wallace doesn't touch the ball offensively.
Black Dynamite 03-28-2006, 10:22 PM I'll see if you guys can instill some confidence in me and change my mind.

Fearless prediction. Mark Cubans head will explode tonight once he looks into Sheed's cold stare.

He will give up all his assets after the game and go back to his first job. Then all will be right with the world.
[smilie=applause.gi: i was right on the money. The powers of Super Sheed prevail.
Black Dynamite 03-28-2006, 10:23 PM A win's a win and really nice for HCA but this team has flaws that could be fatal in the later rounds.
Basically come close games, Ben Wallace doesn't touch the ball offensively.
did you see the game. we played inside outside and almost all the 3's came off the inside set ups. we played a solid gameplan for once and hustled our asses off.
Kstat 03-28-2006, 10:33 PM magic number to clinch the NBA's best record: 10 (9 with a clippers win tonight)
magic number to clinch the east: 4
We can tie the franchise road record tomorrow witha win in Philly.
Nah, wasn't on in my area so I'll have to defer to those who watched it. All of our threes were clean looks? I guess those are just as good as any two pointer we could muster - especially when Chauncey is shooting them. Were all of the foul calls legit? Billups shot 12 of them, was he really attacking the basket or could Terry just not guard him sorta deal? Who did Prince guard tonight?? I assume Stack abused Rip??
Does this win mean we have the Dallas tie-breaker as well, I remember somebody saying as much.
Let's hope the Clippers can pull on e out tonight vs San Antonio...
Kstat 03-28-2006, 10:39 PM we currently have a slight edge over dallas in the tiebreaker, but we cant lose any games to phoenix, NOK, indiana, milwaukee or cleveland. Every other game is less important.
We also have to root for a dallas loss to cleveland or orlando. If that happens, we can clinch the tiebreaker much easier.
Fortunately, 5 of those 6 games are at home (milwaukee).
Glenn 03-28-2006, 10:46 PM Glad I was wrong about this one.
Dallas looked like ass.
b-diddy 03-28-2006, 10:58 PM great game. chaunce reminded us why he had mvp buzz once upon a time.
just reinforces the notion that pistons have nada to worry about. i truly believe this is a team that can flip the switch. rare indeed.
anyone catch what was up with dirk/avery? avery is the man, he should have slapped dirk for giving the sas.
and its too bad stack doesnt play in the EC, i think he would make a great villain for us.
PS, i'd make the stack/rip trade 10/10 times, but i think the onesidedness of it got overblown. stack is great, im not sure we wouldnt have won a ring with a billups/stack/prince/ben/sheed lineup. not saying we should have kept him... and yes, im aware he's had injury problems.
Sheed in the post? I know I didn't have the balls to predict that. Fun game to watch. Classic Stack crumbling under pressure.

we cant afford that lineup. Stack woulda cost more money too fast. in fact we were in danger of a lame duck year and another team offering him some crazy money as a free agent.

Why don't you defer your bitching to a game that you actually watch?
Take Ben off the floor in close games? Did you see his block to win the game a few games ago? Did you see the clutch tap out back to Billups in this game?
Who cares that we can't give the ball to Ben in late game situations? It's not like teams can double off of him because than no one is there to box him out for the rebound. Of course we are not going to shoot 75% from 3 land in the playoffs..... On that same token, we are not going to shoot 38% from inside the arc either.....
We do have flaws, however... save for the Spurs, we have less flaws than anyone else.
Black Dynamite 03-28-2006, 11:08 PM yea i'm actually happy with the return of defensive emphasis. as long as mo evans doesnt allow another 10 point spurt on his own(that shit was unreal). we'll be fine.
Atticus771 03-28-2006, 11:11 PM Crap, Pharoah comes to the game chat and I missed it. I had no idea you're so tall, Pharoah.
On the game: I had my concerns halfway through the fourth, but we pulled it together. I wonder if Avery got inside Dirk's head, because he was a bit off after their scuffle.
Big props to Rasheed and Chauncey for actually showing up tonight, unlike the NJ game.
b-diddy 03-28-2006, 11:14 PM your right rorchach, i forgot about that.
BUT, i always thought of that trade as joe fleecing jordan. i think thats a little too far.
Kstat 03-28-2006, 11:25 PM Joe definately fleeced Jordan.
Stack is a good fit for Dallas's 1-on-1 isolation offense, but RIp remains the better, younger and more reliable player.
Good thing about this win is it likely could remove us from facing Dallas in the Finals. I expect Sa to win the division, I can't see Dallas winning the west without HC. Detroit is the best road team come playoff time and we couldn't get it done in SA. I can't Dirk Redick and the all choke playoff team( Stack, Dampier, KVH, Armstrong) being any different this year than in the past.
Anthony 03-28-2006, 11:51 PM What an electric game. Sheed in the post, Ben making Dirk work, Billups hitting big shots, Prince with that steal, RIP runnin. God damn. Great game.

H1Man 03-29-2006, 12:22 AM What was the scuffle between Stack and Delfino?
Stack was acting like the bitch he can be when guys piss him off or refuse to pay him after poker games. Note I like Stack but think he gets steamed at the dumbest shit.
Basically Delfino was fighting through the key and got tangled up with Stack. Stack and Delfino landed on the ground. Delfino was called for an O foul. As they were on the ground and after Stack went at Delfino. Delfino held his own and they were seperated no techs.
Black Dynamite 03-29-2006, 12:26 AM What was the scuffle between Stack and Delfino?
Delfino got physical with stack, so stack and him get tangled up, stack pulls him down, then tries to kick or swing at him, but people got in the way too quick. Flip took out Delfino to avoid a possible set up for more activity.
Oh and in the end Delfino got an offensive foul somehow and Stack lost his focus for the rest of the game. Another reason im glad he's gone.
Stack being the prick he is, wrapped his arm around Delfino's neck and threw him to the ground and then gave him a little slap/shove with his hand in Delfino's face. I would hardly call it "tangled up" like Stack put it in the post-game. It was a much more one-sided affair. Yet, of course, Carlos gets an offensive foul [smilie=annoyed.gif].
Black Dynamite 03-29-2006, 01:26 AM well regardless of all 3 stories. we all agree stack was bitchmade and Pharaoh is a tall mothafucka.
Black Dynamite 03-29-2006, 01:45 AM The Pistons made their first eight 3-pointers before Tony Delk missed at the third-quarter buzzer. The Indiana Pacers have the NBA record with a 7-for-7 game in 1995. ....

Black Dynamite 03-29-2006, 02:29 AM i think delfino is a lil stronger than stack. stack has a thugged out history of beating up on the likes of shawn bradley and jeff hornaceck. I dont think he woulda got away with sucker pucnhing delfino str8 up. but Flip defused the issue taking delf out. and the heat stack felt from that threw his focus off which led to him falling off at the end.

BTW Gutz, who's the chick in the avatar?

And yes punching laetner soft ass laetner isnt really super thug.
Vinny 03-29-2006, 02:55 AM I was as pumped as anyone right after the win, but we can't forget that they were missing Devin harris and Josh Howard. Devin Harris is their best on-ball defender and he usually gets alot of fourth quarter minutes so it's probably safe to assume that he would of been on Chauncey in the fourth. Howard's a big hustle guy and a great defender in his own right. It was a great battle but we're gonna have to come a lot stronger than that if they make the finals.

Fair, but I imagine it was VanHorn who got Howards minutes, and Armstrong did well during his time. Chauncy really got off on Terry and Daniels when they were stupid enough to try that trash.
MoTown 03-29-2006, 09:37 AM I just want to let everyone who wasn't at the game know that they did kiss cam and came across Chelios and Kid Rock... Kid Rock took a second to see it and then flicked off the camera. I've never heard the Palace louder.

yargs 03-29-2006, 09:56 AM ahhhh....good to see the same, old, Jerry Stackhouse.
Nice to see he hasn't changed. Gets hot at times....turns the ball over the last 3 times he touches it in the fourth quarter including twice in the last 2 minutes.
Ahhh....the memories. Good riddance, Stack.
WTFchris 03-29-2006, 10:08 AM ^yup. I loved Stack, but he always seemed to carry the team up until the last 2 minutes when he'd shoot blanks from 3 land. Too bad he never had a clutch teammate like Billups with him here.

BIG BEN'S FRO 03-29-2006, 10:24 AM I think you guys are smoking a little too much crack. If I recall correctly, there were a ton of times that Stack won games for us by repeatedly getting to the line in the fourth. Not to mention that I was a lot more comfortable with him taking the last shot in a game then with Grant Hill. Obviously, CB is way more clutch than Stack ever was, but a couple of you seem to forget that we did enjoy success with Stack in the regular season. Unfortunately he turned the ball over too much, was a cancer in the locker room, and was an average defender at best.
BIG BEN'S FRO 03-29-2006, 10:24 AM And let's not forget playing in the playoffs while tripping on weed. That didn't help either.

and thats not his fault?
he could score, and yea he hit some big shots. but in the end he was just a scorer whose ego said he deserved a max contract. Joe D didnt agree with his theory, bye bye. he was gonna be a free agent after the following year and after the Hill debacle of that time. it didnt make sense to put all our chips on Stack. but for all the regular season clutch shots. he didnt hit many clutch ones in the playoffs.

the wrath of diddy 03-29-2006, 10:37 AM For the first time in his career Stack's play in the final minutes helped the Pistons win.

Does Stack just thug-up on white boys??
Not as good as Sheed's take on the Mutombo/Milicic confrontation where he claimed Darko was a Serbian Ganster with bodies buried, but here's Sheeds take on the scuffle nonetheless -
Stackhouse and Pistons' reserve Carlos Delfino got tangled up in the fourth quarter and had to be separated. Delfino was called for an offensive foul, although the replay showed Stackhouse wrapping his arm around Delfino's neck and tossing him to the floor.
"I don't know why they're testing him. Carlos ain't no punk. They kidnap people where he's from (Argentina)," Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace said jokingly.

It ain't our fault we're a healthy team. It's a good thing we won against them anyway.
And Devin Harris would have been torched by Billups. He can't keep Chauncey out the post.

Imagine how Det would feel if they lost to this banged up team. Personally, I don't know how they can take so much pride in the win. They ought to be ashamed. They must wonder what would have happened if we had just 1 of our best perimeter defenders available in the last 2 minutes, how they would have fared. In fact, with Quis fouled out, we were missing our top 4 perimeter defenders. Detroit must know if they were missing even one starter, this would have been a blowout.
Vinny 03-29-2006, 06:34 PM I wasn't trying to make excuses for them, I hate that, my point was that we'll probably have to face those two guys come playoff time if they make it, so we better be ready. Jesus christ, people.
Pharaoh 03-29-2006, 08:46 PM Yes, Detroit should feel ashamed.
We are not allowed to beat a team missing players through injury.
David Stern should approve a new rule that demands that Detroit supply every single team in the league a healthy 12 man roster before every game.
If Dallas is missing Howard and Harris do we have to give them Hunter and Delfino for the game?
We could get them back afterwards, but for that night only just to make it fair we have to play without them
If their players can't stay healthy why is that our problem?
I'm so fucking sick of this.
And who's to say the game would still be tight if Harris and Howard played?
You can't just throw them out there for the final 2 minutes and say "Dallas would have won"
For all I know if they played the whole game they:
1 - could have fouled out
2 - played like shit
3 - been tired at crunch time
4 - fucked up like Stack
5 - twisted an ankle after 3 minutes
6 - twisted an ankle with 4 minutes to go
A whole lot of shit could have happened if they played the whole game.
But dumb fucks don't think about that. It's all about the last 2 minutes.
Vinny 03-29-2006, 09:23 PM I give up.
Darth Thanatos 03-29-2006, 10:11 PM You shouldn't have said anything in the first place. You set yourself up.
Glenn 04-03-2006, 09:19 AM KVH appears to be out for the year with a broken hand.
The Mavs are looking at Shawn Kemp and Christian Laettner, lol.
You know, I think I woulda killed myself if KVH ended up being this years "lame white guy who gets over on the Pistons in the playoffs."
