View Full Version : Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Moodini31 03-27-2006, 12:07 AM First off, this game is freaking great, and this thread can be for hype/dicussion/help or whatever. But, I need some help. I'm in this underground cave thing called the Vilverin Wendesel. For those of you who've played this part, I'm just past where the swinging axes from the ceiling are. There is a door that is hard to lockpick and it says I could use a key too. There is another door that is easy to lockpick, but I don't have any more lockpicks. And, if I go back, I'm pretty sure there's a door that closed behind me that I'm not able to open. Am I screwed? Does anyone have any lockpicking tips too? I'm burning those things like no other.
[smilie=banghead.gi:
Comrade 03-27-2006, 01:05 AM Is this a mission? Or are you just dungeon crawling?
And with lockpicking, ignore the sound and watch the tumbler. You'll notice that they go up at 2 different speeds. It might take some work to recognize it, but you want to wait until it goes up "slow", then you know it's going to stick.
Moodini31 03-27-2006, 09:37 AM I guess I don't get lockpicking. There's like 3 gaps to hit and I hit one up there and I can't get to the others. I just keep randomly hitting them up there and pressing X, burning all of my lockpicks. Help a brotha out!
DrRay11 03-27-2006, 11:18 AM Yeah, I'm not doing so hot on lockpicking either. You have to hit one up there, Mood, and then you have to press A to get it to stick. Then you move to the others.
And Comrade, thanks for the tip. I'll look for it.
Moodini31 03-27-2006, 02:20 PM Thanks e. I wasn't pressing A at all. I'll give that a shot.
Moodini31 04-05-2006, 10:14 PM How many people here are playing this game? I think it would be cool to get a discussion going and clue each other in if we find any tight stuff so we dont' miss anything.
I just joined The Dark Brotherhood. It's an assassin ring. To get in, you need to murder a civilian and then go to sleep. A visitor will come speak to you in your dreams. You will be given a target to assassinate, and if you do, go sleep again and you will be admitted. Super sweeet! [smilie=yourock.gif]
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 11:20 AM The best non-echanted weapon I've found so far is the Honorblade of Chorrol, which does 15 damage. What about everybody else?

Where did you find that e? I'm still rolling with the Samurai sword I got from when I joined The Blades. I think it does like 5 damage.
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 01:57 PM I don't remember for sure. I was waiting in Chorrol at night near the castle, and some dude came to me during my wait. He gave me the mission. For the mission, I was supposed to return the sword to him, but it is so nice that I'm keeping it. I'll check my log and I'll let you know if I find the location of it.
Comrade 04-06-2006, 02:52 PM I'm Master of the Fighters Guild and Champion of the Arena so far. If any of you use Blunt weapons, goto the Market District in the Imperial City. Talk to some of the merchants around there and they'll tell you about a certain merchant that is selling stuff cheaper than it is the make it. Eventually it will lead you a crypt where there is a hidden (badass) mace next to a tomb.
WalledLakeBomber 04-06-2006, 02:56 PM Right now I am working on getting all of my reccomendations from the mages guild so I can be admitted to Arcane University. Once I am admitted I can start to train and develop more powerful potions. This game has so much shit going on that I have not even played any of the main story in almost a week. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

Do you have to listen into their conversations first or will they just offer up the info.
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 03:11 PM I've decided to only use blade, as it seems that leveling both blunt and blade up would be a bit of a waste, IMO. I just wish I would've recognized that when choosing my major skills.

I am kinda running into the same problem. I did a poor choice of picking my major skills so I am not leveling up like I should. Live and learn I guess. Has anybody completed any of the Daedric Shrine side quests yet. I don't have the level necessary yet to attempt them.

They will just offer it up. It's certain merchants, they will eventually tell you to go talk to another one who will offer to pay you to tail him and find out how he is getting his merchandise.

You also get a pretty nifty sword, and some decent loot.
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 03:36 PM If anyone gets bit by a vampire and you don't want to become one, make sure to either go to a chapel and pray at the altar or use a cure disease potion right away, or else you'll become a vampire. Which, if you don't want to be one, can be very annoying. I actually went back in my playtime a couple hours just to heal that disease because I didn't want to be a vampire. Then again, I am being a good guy this time through. Next time, I'm going to be the "bad guy," and join the Dark Brotherhood, be a vampire, and do all that. IMO, it'll be a good way to get more play out of the game than to do everything at once.
Also, whoever is talking about that crypt, is it when you follow that Thoronir guy? I've completed that quest, but I guess I didn't search the "crypt" very thoroughly... I may go back to see if I can get back in.
what are your system specs? my pc doesnt want to run the game well at all which is sad considering i can play fear, q4, doom3, etc etc.
asus a7n8x-e
amd 3200
1g ram
80g + 120g sata hd
nvidia 5200fx 256MB
its probably my sad lil 5200 lol but i was thinking maybe i have something set up weird... it lags like crazy just trying to create a character which is pretty sad. i tried that nvidia mouse-lag fix but that didnt help either.
DrRay11 04-06-2006, 05:49 PM Yeah, your card needs a major overhaul-- Your processor might be alright. I don't know for sure, because I have it for the 360.

Yes it is. It's stashed way next to one of the tombs.

That should be able to run it. Maybe not blistering fast, but it's workable. Did you upgrade your videocard drivers?

Comrade, how can I get back to that tomb? I did the little Thoronir mini-mission thing, but I can't remember how to get back there. Can you tell me how to get back there on the map?
Also, speaking of that Thoronir mission, I followed him, then he met that other dude, and started following him back to his house. It said for me to wait until he's gone and then investigate his house. But I wait until he leaves, then I lockpick his door. I walk around in there for a little bit, but then all of a sudden a guard comes in and arrests me everytime.
Can anyone help me out on either of these things?

thats what im sayin, not great but not one frame per second either. i have the newest drivers, then tried the beta drivers... freshly reformatted pc as of about a week ago, defragged the hard drive, everything is tuned as well as can be. OC'd my graphics card too, did nothing for me. it has to be some disagreement between my pc and the game since i can run other pc-intensive games at decent quality settings but dont even see a performance change with oblivion when i play with the quality settings. i can play nfs:most wanted at 800x600 with 4x FSAA, doom 3 at 1024x768, quake 4 at 1024x768, yet cant get oblivion going at 640x480 faster than 1fps. [smilie=angry.gif]
DrRay11 04-07-2006, 03:45 PM Yeah, something's not right there, UxKa... Not something I'll be able to help with, though, as I'm not that computer smart...
Mood, you've got to pick when a guard's not looking, or even around.

I fired up my PC version and went and did the quest to show ya. You want to go to the Imperial Palace sector. Then you find the tomb, here is a map of it:
http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/310/14eu1.th.jpg (http://img460.imageshack.us/my.php?image=14eu1.jpg)
In there, on the western wall, is a tomb of a guy named Calliben Trentius. As seen here:
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/1183/28iw.th.jpg (http://img331.imageshack.us/my.php?image=28iw.jpg)
Stashed behind his tomb is his weapon, Calliben's Grim Retort. Seen here:
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/6803/37kr.th.jpg (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=37kr.jpg)
If anything, it's a shit ton of money for you start with.
By the way, if you're at least level 10 there is a Daedric quest that gives you a lockpick that never breaks and +40 security skill.

Thanks a lot man. Much more than I expected. Sorry bro, but just so you know, I'll be coming to you for every question I have for the rest of the game. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:
Moodini31 04-12-2006, 03:32 PM So where are you guys at now? I just completed the side quest where you go to figure out the bloodlines of the Arena champion. I went all the way out west, went through a dungeon fighting off killer timberwolves and that cat didn't give me jack when I came back to him. He just side here is a good move, move, parry, and attack? What the crap is that? Did he train me in some way? [smilie=angryfire.g:
Also, I haven't done anything in the main storyline in about 2 weeks. All I do is murder people for the dark brotherhood and do side quests. Super tight! [smilie=2thumbsup.g:
DrRay11 04-12-2006, 03:58 PM Yeah, Mood, after you do that quest, a couple of your attributes are permanently fortified. It said at the top of the screen as he was telling you "Here's a good move, blah blah blah..."
Where am I right now? I've finished much of the main quest, and am the Arena Grand Champion, and am starting to do some quests for the Fighters' Guild now. It's hard to describe your current point in the game, I've found.

Thanks. After you said that, I went and checked and I think my blade, athletics, and something else was fortified. What exactly does fortified mean? Improved permanently?
Also, does anyone know of any helpful websites with FAQs, walkthroughs and that kind of stuff? I want to know what some of these spells and stuff do before I buy them.
Moodini31 04-14-2006, 03:24 AM Comrade, e-ray, anyone, do you know how to complete the quest where you offer the Brandy to Sanguine and he tells you to go to Leyawin and cast a spell on the Countess at the dinner party? The guard at the door keeps telling me I don't look fancy enough to get in, even though I bought the fanciest outfit I could find from the market district. [smilie=banghead.gi:
Any ideas?
Moodini31 04-14-2006, 11:57 AM I found a great walkthrough website for this game, I mean, it has it all.

I figured it out. All I did was try it wearing my Kvatch armor I got from ridding the city of the Daedra. He let me right in, I casted the spell on her, her clothes disappeared (super tight! [smilie=2thumbsup.g: ), then I got arrested (not tight [smilie=arrgh.jpg] ), broke out of jail with a lockpick, went back to the statue of Sanguine and he gave me the Sanguine Rose Staff, that allows me to summon this huge "iceman" into battle. Amazing! [smilie=applause.gi:

Found it, it was in Bravil. I love answering my own questions.
-NoQuarter- 04-18-2006, 11:31 PM This game is beyond amazing. I loved Morrowind, and this one is actually even better.
So far, my only problem I've come across is finding somebody who can afford to buy my REALLY expensive items. I have a few items that I have no use for and can't find any merchants who have more than 1,000 gold to spend. Anyone know where to find some rich merchants?
I miss that weird little crab-merchant from Morrowind. Lol.
DrRay11 04-19-2006, 07:17 AM I buy and sell in the Imperial City, mainly.

Me too.
A couple quick questions for you guys. Where can I learn alchemy and how do you do it? I have some ingredients, but how do I mix them and create potions and stuff? I'm tired of dropping like 250 gold a pop for healing potion.
And what's the best way to get your magical weapons recharged? I have like 3 of them and they are about done. I've gone to a few mages guilds and had them recharged, but that's expensive. Isn't there a way you can do it yourself? Or what is a good way to make some easy money to get them recharged?
DrRay11 04-19-2006, 11:51 AM Don't know about alchemy, but recharge your weapons using soul gems.

Use one of the tools. A mortar and pestle are required. A retort(improves the positive effects), alembic(reduces the negative effects), and calcinator(increasing all the good/bad effects) are just add ons. Each ingredient has 4 effects, but you can only unlock them as you gain your perks(i.e. and Apprentice in alchemy can use 2 effects per ingredient, while an Expert can use 3). You can't combine the same ingredients, so for a healing potion you'd need 2 different ingredients with the Restore Health effect. The most common are cairn bolete caps and and lady's mantle leaves. You can find cairn in dungeons, and a lot of lady's mantle NE of Kvatch(the destroyed part) at Trumbe. I might throw up a screenshot in a bit if I get time. Hope that helps.

I play it on both. Mostly on the 360 because I can use it on the TV in HiDef, but the PC version has some sick mods and definitely feels 'smoother'.

That's another thing I've been curious about. I am playing it for the PC, and I was wondering where the best place to get mods for it is. And some suggestions as far as favorite mods.
Also, I didn't know how to use the characer creator nearly as well as I do now so my character looks pretty lame, and I'm way too far along to just make a new character, so I was wondering if their's a way to hack the file and redo the way he looks (not species or anything like that). I can't imagine it would be that hard, especially since you can mod and skin shit.

I'd definitely suggest BT mod, Dark UI, AF Leveling Mod, Cyrodiil Terrain Map, Crosshair Size Reduction, and Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. That's a good start.
To change your face and stuff, hit ~ and type ShowRaceMenu in the console.
Moodini31 04-23-2006, 02:27 PM Is anything better than joining the Dark Brotherhood? I did a quest last night where I had to stab a guy with a blade with a special poison on him that would appear to make him look dead in front of another "hitman" who was assigned to kill him. Then I had to wait a day, go to his tomb and give him a special potion that would "wake him up". After he woke, I had to protect him from the attacking zombies in the tomb (that were actually his old relatives) and escort him out so he could disappear and never be seen again. I think I was paid 300 gold. Frickin' sweet! [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

Comrade 04-26-2006, 12:38 AM For anybody playing this on the PC, I'd also check out the Oblivion mod manager (http://timeslip.chorrol.com/obmm.html). It keeps your /Data folder organized and makes installing/uninstalling mods very easy. It requires the .NET Framework from Microsoft - which you should already have if use Windows Update(which you should). The mods for the PC version are already amazing.
another FYI for people 'trying' to play on PC. i downloaded 'oldblivion' and now im playing with the graphics halfway up and everything is all good. pretty sure it was the shaders killing my card and oldblivion forces the game to use an earlier version of shaders, i believe dx7 instead of dx9. either way im having fun now and im sure ill be back with some questions once i get into the game more.

You know, I just seen that today. I was going to post that up here. Good to see it's working for you, it's an excellent game.
Also, Bethesda just released 2 new official mods available at http://obliviondownloads.com/ and through the XBox marketplace. They cost money, and 2 dollars for horse armor seems like a bit much. But the Orrery and Wizard's Tower are actually very good. I think the scheme is lame, as you can get free Oblivion mods that are actually better. If anybody needs help 'procuring' the PC versions of the mod just PM me.

Thanks comrade, that's perfect.
A few other questions for you. I just came across the Blackwood Company in Leyawiin. Inside were a bunch of sweet looking guys with amazing armor and tight weapons. Is that something you can join?
Also, I'm at the Mages Guild in Chorrol and I'm able to buy some spells like Bound Greaves, Bound Helmet, and Bound War Axe. What do they do? Thanks.
im probably waaaay behind everyone else but...
what tricks for money and experience have you figured out that arent actually cheating or taking advantages of glitches?
examples:
for money i will buy a ton of ingredients, and while still in the store i make a ton of potions and sell them immediately (except the good ones). usually good for about 1000 gold at a good store.
for experience i will stand next to a bed and conjure skeletons, then kill them. its good to do this while watching a game or something so you have something to do while your magic recharges. every few minutes you will level up enough in blade/blunt and conjure to gain a whole level.
DrRay11 04-30-2006, 09:42 PM I always enchant rings and weapons with my Sigil Stones and then sell them. That kicks some serious ass.
Moodini31 04-30-2006, 09:53 PM OK, I need some serious help here. What exactly is a sigil stone, where do you get them, and how do you enchant things? Another thing, why can't I conjure anything? I bought some spells that say you need to have a conjuration level of 25. I think I'm at 23, but I put on my conjuration robe and it takes me up to 27, so I should be able to conjure right? Nope! Help!
hmm... when i get some sigil stones ill have to try that.
moodini: i could conjure a skeleton as soon as i started the game, so i dont know what your problem is.

Yes you can, during the Fighters Guild quest. You also find a full set of their armor during a mission in a mine.
Bound Spells summons Daedric armor/weapons for a brief time, which is the best heavy armor in the game. It's what the assassins used at the start of the game.

You get Sigil Stones from inside Oblivion gates. You close one early in the main story which causes them to randomly pop up all over the world - at which point you can go in, fight some baddies, and close the gate(which nets you the Sigil Stone). To enchant you need to have access to the Arcane University, so you'll need to join the Mages Guild and get all 7 recommendations from all the guild halls. Easy stuff. Once you're there you can use Sigil Stones or Soul Stones. And maybe by level 25 it literally means level 25, as in your character level and not your skill. That's my only guess, that or you need a legit 25 not enhanced from items. I can't say for sure, I might test it on my PC version. What spell was it again?

I just tried some basic conjuration spells like summon skeleton, zombie, ghost, etc.

That's just simple enchanting, to get all the options you need to get into the Arcane University.

I just enchanted an elven sword at the Arcane University. I added drain health 5 pts for 10 sec in a 10 ft radius, 5 pts fire damage, 3 pts shock damage, and fortify strength for 2 secs on contact. Super sweeeet!
Moodini31 05-04-2006, 11:19 PM I've now fulfilled enough contracts with the Dark Brotherhood and now Vicente Valtiere is offering me a chance to become a vampire. What happens to you if you become a vampire and should I do it?
Comrade 05-05-2006, 01:52 AM I've now fulfilled enough contracts with the Dark Brotherhood and now Vicente Valtiere is offering me a chance to become a vampire. What happens to you if you become a vampire and should I do it?
You get some nifty powers and stat/skill bonuses. You have to feed every 24 hours, or you become stronger(with a few notable weaknesses). For instance, when you first become one you get a +5 to Strength, Willpower, and Speed and +5 to a number of skills, and also a nifty Nightsight/Detect Life combo spell called Hunter's Sight. You can still go out in the sun and no one can tell you're a vampire. But if you wait 24 hours and don't feed you get +10's across the board as well as a new power, however sun starts to hurt you. The longer you go without feeding, the stronger you get(up to a maximum of 4 days). However, the sun hurts more and more and people can tell you're a vampire, so you'll need to get their disposition up to 100 to do business with them. All in all, I definitely recommend going vampire. You can cure it later if you want, and if you manage it well you'll never have a problem with it.

I've beat it pretty thoroughly. To feed you need to sneak up on somebody sleeping. Make sure you're in sneak, and get near them and a red blood drop should appear. I suggest the hobos in all the cities. They sleep outside so they're easy feedin'. Just find one of their beds and make it a point to stop there later on at night. If you need any help finding 'em just tell me.
are there any stores to sell weapons/armor that can afford to buy my high-priced items? im sick of finding a sword worth 4000 and selling it for 1200 because thats all the owner has.

I know man, it sucks. I think you just have to roll with it though. I've gone all around the Imperial City and you're going to get 1200 at best.

yeah ive been through every city thats on the map at the start of the game, and a couple towns ive found. i was hoping that there was a little town or camp somewhere that you can find, and someone would have 10,000 to blow on stuff.
